We decided to create this video based on the reactions to a vide owe made of the reverse topic - things America could learn from Denmark.
Since we grew up in the USA and moved to Denmark in 2017, we love both countries and try to focus on the best things about both. This means that there are many opportunities for both Denmark and the US to learn from one another and improve on their existing greatness.
Of course, no country is perfect, so we wanted to highlight things about America that Denmark could take and run with. Many already exist to some level and could be scaled.
Some of them are things about the American economy and make up of the US system that would work well in Denmark. Other elements are more cultural and things about American culture that work well in the US and could be helpful for Danes in daily life in Denmark.
Of course, we make both of these videos without tearing down either country, so while we want to hear your comments - please do the same. Nationalism is never something we want to see from people in either America or Denmark, but respectful observations and opinions are always welcomed 😊

Some of these aspects of a Danish lifestyle are things we have grown to love since moving to Denmark in 2017 and others are part of the ethos and nature of the country.
No country is perfect and we are of course discussing both countries from a generalized point of view, but having lived in America and lived in Denmark for many years - we think we have found some things that America could learn from Denmark.
Of course, the Danes are known for many parts of their culture like happiness and work life balance - but behind those metrics, there are lessons that we think Americans would benefit from. The same things that make Denmark a great place to call home could be implemented in the United States.
Since moving to Denmark, these are just five of the things we picked that we'd love to see adopted more broadly in our home country. Let us know your thoughts or additional aspects below.

If you're thinking about moving to Denmark, or just curious about what life in Denmark is like - this video is for you. We are debunking 7 common myths about living in Denmark that many expats and travelers hear online, in books, and from politicians. Our goals is to give you the real story on what it’s like to live in Denmark.
It’s true that Denmark has a high English proficiency rate, but that doesn’t mean everyone you meet will communicate fluently in English. We discuss why it’s important to adjust your English-speaking pace and level compared to how you might communicate in the US or UK.
While Denmark is known for its 37.5-hour work week and generous 5 weeks of vacation, not everyone enjoys these working conditions without exception. We talk about the reality of Danish work culture. It's good but not as universally perfect as you might think.
Denmark is often discussed as a homogenous country, but about 10% of its residents are not ethnically Danish? We cover the diverse society that exists in Denmark, including the challenges faced by minorities and the ongoing efforts to promote inclusion, despite pushback from certain citizens and political groups.
Denmark’s welfare system is renowned worldwide, but it’s not as all-encompassing as some might believe. We’ll break down what is covered and what is not, how the system is funded (hint: it’s not free), and the trade-offs involved.
Former US Ambassador Carla Sands once tweeted that middle-class Danes can't afford cars, but that’s not entirely true. While Denmark does have an incredible biking infrastructure and top-notch public transportation, many families still rely on cars, especially in non-urban areas. We’ll separate fact from fiction regarding cars in Denmark.
Denmark is often seen as a near-perfect country, but it’s not without its social issues. We’ll explore the challenges Denmark faces, including inequality, mental health, and even homelessness. Moving to Denmark might reduce stress in your life, but it’s not a cure-all for life’s problems.
Denmark is frequently labeled as the happiest country in the world, but there’s more to the story. We discuss the difference between contentment and happiness, and how they're reflected in Danish society.
Whether you're an expat considering a move or just curious about Danish culture, this video provides an honest look at what life in Denmark is really like.

Exploring Denmark's Unique Relationship with the EU
Why does Denmark, an EU member since 1973, continue to use the Danish krone (DKK) instead of adopting the euro, the official currency used by 20 of the 27 EU member states? This video takes you through Denmark’s unique relationship with the European Union and the euro, shedding light on the historical, political, and economic factors behind Denmark’s choice to keep its currency.
The euro was introduced in 1999 to simplify trade, promote economic integration, and stabilize economies across Europe. However, Denmark remains an outlier despite its deep involvement in the EU. We explore the origins of this decision, starting with the Maastricht Treaty of 1992, which laid the groundwork for the euro and sparked debates across Europe, particularly in Denmark.
In 1992, Denmark faced a pivotal moment when the Maastricht Treaty was narrowly rejected by Danish voters, leading to the historic Edinburgh Agreement. This agreement secured Denmark's opt-outs from key areas of the treaty, allowing the country to remain in the EU while retaining control over critical policies, including defense, justice, and crucially, the adoption of the euro.
Through a second referendum in 1993, Denmark accepted the Maastricht Treaty with these opt-outs in place, ensuring that the Danish krone would remain the national currency. We dive into the specifics of these opt-outs, especially the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) opt-out, which continues to allow Denmark to peg the krone to the euro.
Why does Denmark continue to resist adopting the euro? We examine the economic and political implications, including the loss of national control, economic disparities, and political tensions that come with a common currency. Denmark’s decision to maintain the krone offers a unique balance, providing economic stability while preserving national sovereignty.
This video also looks at the changing landscape of Denmark’s opt-outs. For example, Denmark recently abolished its opt-out from the EU's defense policy in 2022, following a national referendum. We discuss how these shifts reflect Denmark’s evolving relationship with the EU, yet how the euro opt-out remains firmly in place.
With Denmark’s skepticism toward the EU still high compared to other member states, what does the future hold? While Denmark is unlikely to leave the EU, the adoption of the euro seems equally unlikely. Denmark’s current arrangement, which allows it to reap the benefits of a stable currency while maintaining monetary independence, appears to offer the best of both worlds.

One of the biggest Copenhagen tourist mistakes that even our friends and family make when they visit is thinking they can go out to eat without a reservation at any hour of the day. Something we miss about the USA while living in Denmark is the abundance of food options at all hours of the day.
A sit-down meal or even food in a pub can be almost impossible to find after a certain hour 🍽️ This is true, even in a capital city like Copenhagen.
🛫 Visitors from other cultures often miss this fact when preparing for their trips and can arrive with only street food and convenience meals like fast food available.
We made a full video about the things we miss about American life while living abroad in Denmark linked to this video.

We get asked this question so often that we decided to dedicate an entire video about the things that we miss from the USA while living abroad. From food and dining experiences to lifestyle changes, cultural adjustments, and the challenges of adapting to a new environment, there are all kinds of challenges and things we have adapted to. What You'll Learn:
🌍 Food & Dining: we discuss the differences in dining culture, such as the lack of 24-hour diners and our hometown favorties. 🛒 Shopping & Consumer Goods: we discuss the conveniences of American shopping that expats miss, from larger supermarkets with extensive selections to the friendly customer service in the US. 🏈 Lifestyle & Culture: We have made major changes in how we watch the sports, entertainment, and holiday traditions that Americans love. Much has changed for us including watching the NFL (or celebrating Thanksgiving). We have made so many adjustments to social norms and etiquette in Denmark. 🚗 Convenience & Accessibility: We explain the transportation and 24/7 services that are more common in the U.S., such as car-centric lifestyles and the convenience of 24-hour stores and pharmacies. 🗣️ Communication & Language: Hear us reflect on the language barriers and communication challenges that expats face in Denmark. We also cover the importance of staying connected to American media, news, and cultural references. 👪 Family & Social Connections: This one seems the most obvious, but you'll hear how distance affects family ties and social networks. We talk about how this makes it difficult to maintain close relationships, and impacts our lives as internationals living abroad.
Join us as we explore these topics and share personal anecdotes and experiences about what it's really like to live in Denmark as Americans. Whether you're a Dane curious about American expats' perspectives or an international looking to move to Denmark, this video is packed with useful insights and our personal reflections.

There was a lot to discuss, including the stereotypes that exist about both regions of the country. One in particular is the idea that people living in Jutland are more traditional.
Is this stereotype rooted in part of Danish history? This region of Denmark has been through war and occupation and felt cultural repression.
Throughout this episode, we discussed the culture, population, geography, and stereotypes that make these regions of Denmark unique.
Of course, we also focused on the implications of those cultural differences and regional rivalry for internationals living in Denmark 🌎

Business Inquiries: martin@bentertained.dk👕🇩🇰 How to Dress for Summer in Copenhagen (what to pack if you travel to Denmark) #denmarkRobe Trotting2024-06-25 | ✨ What should you pack for Copenhagen? 👇
I get asked this question a lot and there’s almost no good answer because the ever-changing and hard-to-predict weather makes it hard to advise.
🧳 Still, there are some clear tips and a brief packing list that will keep you happy if you travel to Denmark in the summer and visit Copenhagen.
1) Dress for the weather: this will mean packing clothes for rain, warm temperatures, and chilly days - because you’re likely to get them all, even on a short trip ☔️
2) Layers are your friend 🧥 when you’re not in direct sunlight it can feel about cooler than the temperature. The secret is to dress with layers you can take on or off - it can be annoying but you’re ready for everything.
3) Rainproof your wardrobe and accessories: it will probably rain, and you’ll probably hear someone tell you there’s “no bad weather, only bad clothing” so make sure you have good clothing 👢
4) Danes dress in a practical way: people in Copenhagen have adapted their wardrobes to their lifestyle - so that’s a lot of outdoor activity, biking, and walking 🚴 Wearing sturdy shoes, dark clothes, and stretchy fabric will keep you comfortable throughout the day.
5) Packing list: my described clothing in this video will get you through most days in Copenhagen: shorts and pants (even in the middle of summer), waterproof items (bags, shoes, and rain gear), casual outfits (even for a dinner out you will see many guests in denim jeans and short sleeves), and in the evening you will need a hoodie or a light jacket.

Why was it so uncomfortable for them? Discussion about the moment in history that the concept was named helps to unlock some cultural context around these societal rules.

The Expat Insider Survey ranks Denmark 53rd out of 53 countries in the subcategory of finding friends and 66% of those surveyed reported it challenging to make friends with locals when moving abroad to Denmark. While it’s not impossible to make connections in Denmark, those numbers aren’t made up and this episode will help you defy the odds and understand the reality of moving to Denmark without a friend network.
Annie and Derek break down the cultural reasons behind Denmark’s difficult friendship-making landscape. As a mother of four, Annie sheds some light on the way Danes are brought up to prefer a smaller network of friends and may not have room for more. Here’s a quick summary of what you need to know and how it may impact you. If you’re a homeowner or thinking of buying a home in 2024, this one is for you.
I’m not a financial advisor or offering financial advice, but hopefully this makes a slightly complicated topic easier to digest. Talk to an expert for actual advice on how and if this may impact you. #denmarklife #danishlife #livingindenmark #lifeindenmark #2024🇩🇰 Fastelavns Burger Reaction #denmark #reaction #burgerkingRobe Trotting2024-02-05 | 🍔 We tried the Fastelavnsburger at Burger King so that you don’t have to, and here’s our reaction.
🇩🇰 The fast food version of a traditional Danish fastelavnsboller is certainly unique and memorable.
If you can dress up in a costume for fastelavn, so can your fastelavnboller - they’re dressing up like hamburgers in this case.
🤔 I think we’ll be sticking to the original pastries for the rest of the season - but it was too ridiculous not to try. We had a little fun with the presentation as well, so hopefully you enjoy it. What do you think?

We made an entire video dedicated to things changing in Denmark this year, and are sharing some of the biggest and most impactful ones here.
The rejsekort app is already being tested and will phase in to replace the existing system during 2024. What do you think? #rejsekort #danish #publictransport #publictransportation #denmark🇩🇰 #2024 #lifeindenmark #livingindenmark #expatindenmarkCan DENMARK Have it Both Ways on Minimum Wage?Robe Trotting2024-01-23 | In this video we take a look Denmark's stance on minimum wage for Danish workers. In fact, there is no minimum wage - as part of a system that has historically benefited workers.
We take a look at the labor model in Denmark and how it evolved over time. There are also many instances of this model being over-simplified through internet memes and soundbites.
In a darker way, the lack of a minimum wage is sometimes exploited by industries like high end restaurants. In particular, Danish restaurant Noma has been criticized for relying on unpaid labor.
The European Union has enacted policy that contradicts the Danish model (and the Swedish model) for labor rates and wages. This has led to law suits and potentially future litigation #denmark #laborunion #minimumwagesact #sweden #eu #europe

She announced her abdication in her annual New Year’s Eve address and will be passing the crown to her son, who will be titled King Frederik X, on the 14th of January 2024.
This week we made a full video on YT of all the changes that will be coming to Denmark in 2024, and we also wanted to share them in a series here. From Danish transportation, to work, to taxes, and fireworks - the year of 2024 will usher in some new rules, laws, and policies in Denmark.🚪✈️ The Secret Door at Copenhagen Airport #cph #travelRobe Trotting2024-01-13 | 🇩🇰✈️ I just learned about this secret door and Copenhagen Airport hack and had to share it. I wish I knew about it sooner as someone who doesn’t always do well when walking through heavy fragrances and smells. It’s because I have always struggled with allergies and asthma, and when I travel it can be triggered.
I’m lucky I haven’t had any major issues, but this little door on the left, just past security, will make sure I never do when I travel. What an awesome feature by Copenhagen Airport, which has already won International Awards as Northern Europe’s Best Airport and Best Airport Security.
In case you didn’t know about this feature, I just had to share it for those who need it or travel with friends and family who do 😊 #denmark #copenhagen #airportDENMARK in 2024 Will Be Different... Heres HowRobe Trotting2024-01-12 | Denmark will be different in 2024... and here's how! In this video, we take a look at the changes on the horizon for Denmark in 2024. Many things will be different about life in Denmark, and we wanted to help others navigate the changes that are coming for Denmark this year.
Besides the new king of Denmark, things are changing throughout Danish life. We can expect that getting around Denmark will include higher public transportation costs, but some areas will see increased subsidies. Property taxes in Denmark will be calculated in a different way with a major impact on new home buyers in Denmark and potential impacts on housing prices in Denmark.
Working in Denmark will be different in 2024 as well. For foreigners living in Denmark, there are more jobs on the positive list, and everyone may be subject to new EU work hours record laws.
Some new laws have been proposed with ramifications for those starting a family in Denmark. Others will impact how holidays are celebrated and one Danish holiday will go missing in 2024.
Overall, living in Denmark should be as good as always this year, but there are some significant changes on the way that we can all be knowledgable of now.

Last week we learned what come next - when we’ll have to start saying “His Majesty King Frederik X” and all the details behind it. This included learning that a new monogram was being designed for Crown Prince Frederik’s upcoming title change. That got me thinking… what will the new monogram look like, and what if it was your job to design it? Could you imagine working with HM The Queen on anything design related considering she’s a well-celebrated designer and artist herself? How would you redesign a monogram for the oldest European monarchy in the world while keeping up with the times?
😂 Okay… it was also just some dumb humor that snowballed into a little sketch!
Disclosure: In case it has to be said, this is satire

I miss a lot of foods from the United States, and when I fly back to Copenhagen, I fill my suitcase with a few items. These are a few things that hold me over when I need a taste of American food or something else I can’t find in Denmark.
What do you think of my picks, and what do you bring back with you if you’re also a foreigner living in Denmark or a Dane who travels abroad? 😃 #expatlife #denmark #danmark #americansnacks #americanfood #american #usa #america🇩🇰🎆 Denmark and New Year’s Eve Fireworks 😯Robe Trotting2023-12-30 | 🇩🇰🎆 Everywhere I’ve lived fireworks have been a part of New Years celebrations, but for Danes celebrating Nytår - the fireworks are NEXT LEVEL. If you’re new to Denmark or experiencing a Danish New Year’s Eve for the first time, you may not be prepared for the fireworks. Mostly, the way that they’re fired off in the streets with inconsistent safety precautions.
If you didn’t know any better, you may think it’s just how things are and everyone loves it equally, but the polling suggests otherwise. In fact, the public opinion on fireworks is set to change the regulations and increase restrictions for next year.
We explored this topic and all the cultural and historic reasons behind Denmark’s fireworks fascination in a YT video this week. Whatever your thought are, we wish you all a God Nytår and a safe and happy celebration. #denmark #danmark #dansk🇩🇰🎁 What I Bring Back From Denmark for Christmas in USA 🎄🇺🇸 #shorts #denmark #julRobe Trotting2023-12-24 | 🇩🇰🎄🇺🇸 We always say how lucky we feel to get to experience life in two cultures and countries that we love. We’re even luckier that our families embrace Danish things with 100% openness. This means we share a taste of Danish Christmas with them every year. It also means we fly back to the States with a bag full of food and drink from Denmark to give them a sample of our favorite snacks and drinks from Jul. check out what we brought them this year and let us know what else we should add to our checked bag for next Christmas 😊
