What happens if you take one tune and send it around the world? We’re about to find out.
Our tune, this year written by Scottish acccordonist and musician Phil Cunningham, has been on the next part of its journey - passed around the world, from one virtuoso violinist to another. Each violinist along with colleagues has made it their own. They have changed rhythms, twisted notes, rewritten corners, added instrumentation and colours and effects – and along the way, they taught us to understand, to explore and to play the music of their traditions.
This next stop has seen us visit Scotland, Egypt and explore an East meets West theme. We have gained insight into the musical worlds of each tradition, told by the violin and led by a stellar line up of great musicians:
Scotland: Aly Bain, Phil Cunningham, Anna Massie, Jenna Reid, Innes White Egypt: Laura & Sarah Ayoub (@TheAyoubSisters) and @JTMusicOud East meets West: @timmychooi and @laurechanviolin
We hope you enjoy the performance.

#benedettisessions #globalviolin #nicolabenedettiGlobal Violin Sessions: A Cultural Exchange Part 2Nicola Benedetti and The Benedetti Foundation2022-04-20 | We are excited to welcome you back to join us for the Global Violin Sessions: A Cultural Exchange Part 2.
🗺So what are the Global Sessions all about? Let’s find out…
Across 3 weekends from 23-24 April, we will journey to different traditions led by guest artists incl. Aly Bain, Phil Cunningham and Jenna Reid (Scotland), The Ayoub Sisters (Egypt) & Timothy Chooi and Laure Chan (East Meets West).
What can I expect from The Global Sessions? This year’s tune, written by accordionist Phil Cunningham, will be given its first outing played by Nicola Benedetti. It will then be passed round the musicians over 3 weeks. Each violinist along with colleagues will make it their own. They will change rhythms, twist notes, rewrite corners, add instrumentation and colours and effects – and along the way, teach us how they do it!
Technique, sound, rhythm and melody will be taught and explored, but these sessions have a deeper story to tell. We will embrace our similarities whilst celebrating our differences.
Everyone taking part can then choose as many versions of the tune as they wish to record and send us their playing. Your videos will be weaved together to create a unique final performance.
Who can take part? Everyone is welcome - all ages, all levels.
Saturday Sessions are open to all as we discover more about the musicial traditions.
Sunday Sessions are for violinists and will focus on exploring and playing the new arrangements of the original tune.
Make sure to register your spot by the end of the day on 21 April to receive the information ahead of the first weekend.

In this first video of the series, violinist Nicola Benedetti begins to explore the roots, the excitement and the wonders of Italian Baroque music.
The Baroque period was a time in our history that was full of creation and so much richness.
As a style of music, it is captivating. It is an endless journey of discovery, of nuance, contrast, drama, excitement, dance, beauty and sometimes (especially in the case of Italian Baroque) ugliness too!
Over July 2021, we will be sharing a new series of delving into the world of Italain Baroque - subscribe to this channel for new releases.

#benedettisessions #nicolabenedetti #baroqueNicola Benedetti - BaroqueNicola Benedetti and The Benedetti Foundation2021-05-24 | The Italian Baroque, and in particular the music of Antonio Vivaldi, polarises musicians and music lovers alike. Many find it light fare: too populist, repetitive and predictable. It’s often dismissed as the poorer, simpler cousin of the sophisticated German composer. But to compare Vivaldi to Bach is to do them both an injustice.
The sound world of early eighteenth-century Italy first came into full three-dimensional focus for me when I met Italian conductor, harpsichordist and founder of the Venice Baroque Orchestra, Andrea Marcon. Having listened obsessively to his recordings, I was both honoured and humbled by the opportunity. “Just bring your violin and see what happens”. You can imagine how ill-equipped and ill-prepared I was feeling. I took comfort in assuming it would be more talk than playing, but that’s certainly not what Andrea had in mind. To him, the music of Vivaldi is talking. It’s the best kind of conversation you can conjure up and provides the fastest way to get to know someone. Just play, and play, and play.

#nicolabenedetti #baroqueBuilding Foundations: Exploring the Psychology and Physicality of Playing - The HighlightsNicola Benedetti and The Benedetti Foundation2021-05-02 | Building Foundations: Exploring the Psychology and Physicality of Playing Virtual Sessions, April 2021
Our mind and body work together in magical ways. When trying to learn an instrument, we often get very quickly consumed with the small problems. Exactly where to put a finger or trying to stop a squeak or a scratch. In trying to solve smaller problems, we lose sight of our main objectives. What general state does our body have to be in, in order to play with ease, and experience healthy development? Why are we playing in the first place? And what mindset do we want in order to experience deeper joy? Intention, thought, confidence, openness, and individuality are all intrinsic to developing our playing. How we stand, how we breathe, what we are focused on and how comfortable we are, are all important questions we continually strive to answer.
From 29 March – 18 April, the Benedetti Foundation delivered our first 3-week Virtual Sessions of 2021, ‘Building Foundations: Exploring the Physicality and Psychology of Playing’. This short film shares the highlights of these three weeks.
We believe strongly in the addressing of our foundations, within which we advocate for individuality and creativity to be applied to these foundations. There is no one way to play, one way to make music, one interpretation, or one methodology or pedagogy. Alongside our friends, colleagues and incredible tutors, we continue to strive to inspire collective development and never-ending journey of discovery.
