Rupert SpiraIn this discussion exploring time and space Rupert illustrates how, by investigating our experience and questioning our perceptions, we find that ‘here’ exists at the intersection between space and the infinite, and ‘now’ exists where time meets the eternal.
Rupert says: ‘From the point of view of time, now is a moment, but in our experience, it is not. It is always now, and we never leave now. So, now is not a moment sandwiched between the past and the future. No one has ever experienced the past or the future. Now is the ever-present; it is eternity. It is the place where time and eternity intersect. And that is why, in the spiritual traditions, the now is a portal through which we pass out of time into eternity.
‘In the same way, the only experience we have is here. If I were to ask you to stand up and go over there, would you leave here? Has anyone been to the place called “there”? The experience here is always the same. In other words, here is not a place in space – all space takes place here. So, here is the place at which we pass out of space into the infinite.
‘Remember William Blake: “This life’s dim windows of the soul / Distorts the heavens from pole to pole / And leads you to believe a lie / When you see with, not through, the eye.”’

RS23031lllWhy Don’t I Experience My Innate Happiness?Rupert Spira2024-10-18 | A man wonders why, despite having an intellectual understanding of innate happiness, the experience of it still eludes him. Why, even after years of pursuing his interest in the non-dual understanding, does he still not feel the sense of joy Rupert sometimes speaks of?
Rupert says: ‘You say you don’t have an experiential understanding of your self. Yet, when I asked you about it, you said it’s aware, accepting and at peace, and then you fell silent. I couldn’t improve on that. And it’s true – I do speak of peace and joy, but I usually qualify the word “joy”, because I want to convey to people that it’s not colourful or exotic – it’s more like a quiet joy or a feeling of sufficiency.
‘And you’re possibly looking for evidence of it in your thoughts and feelings. It’s true that, in time, thoughts, feelings, actions and relationships are gradually affected by this recognition of our innate peace. But don’t look for the evidence there. Look for the evidence in your self, in the background of experience.’

RS23005iThe Witness Is Your SelfRupert Spira2024-10-16 | What does it mean to be an observer, or the witness, in meditation? And how can we become aware of our true self while meditating? A man who experienced an altered state after a particular meditation wants to know if what he experienced was his essential self.
Rupert says: ‘If the state that you witnessed altered, then no, it’s not your self. Even the most marvellous altered state you could imagine would not be your self. You would be that which witnesses it or knows it.
‘You cannot be aware of your true self in subject-object relationship, because the awareness that knows and the awareness that is known are the same. You cannot witness your self. You can only witness something. Whatever you witness is not essentially your self. You are the witness.’

RS23139cIdentifying Outdated BeliefsRupert Spira2024-10-13 | How can we deal with outdated beliefs that hold us back? In this conversation, Rupert helps a woman explore and identify limiting beliefs around finding companionship.
Rupert says: ‘You feel that your desire for a companion will not be fulfilled, so you’re presenting a picture of yourself with your heart closed, not overflowing with love. But I don’t think you really believe that. It’s a defence mechanism of your mind, and there may have been a good reason to be defensive in the past, but there no longer is.
‘Yet, the old habit remains. So, when your mind raises this barrier around your heart again, just don’t believe it. It’s based on an old idea of yourself. Upgrade your idea about yourself. You want to desire a relationship from fullness, from love. Desire it because your heart is so full of love, you just can’t bear holding it in anymore.’

RS23144lDo We Need to Stop Thought to Abide as Being?Rupert Spira2024-10-11 | Do we need to stop thought in order to abide as awareness, or do thoughts and perceptions prevent us from simply being?
Rupert says: ‘Don’t feel that thinking and perceiving need to disappear in order to abide as your self. Awareness is equally present during thinking and perceiving and in their absence. Just like the screen is equally present during the movie and after it has come to an end.
‘You can abide in your true nature right now – the fact that thoughts and perceptions are present makes no difference. Just be that which is aware of this conversation and the sight of this room. Know yourself as that. Feel yourself as that. Be that knowingly.’

RS23011fThe Mind Can’t Bear SilenceRupert Spira2024-10-09 | A man who is struggling with meditation says he finds it difficult to follow the suggestion of simply being, especially when there is nothing for his mind to do.
Rupert says: ‘What you’re experiencing is the primal impulse of the mind to do something. It cannot bear the thought of not doing anything or the thought that it might not be relevant in what we’re speaking of here, so it’s very uncomfortable during those periods of silence. That habit or impulse to do something is not being fed here, and your mind’s in a state of rebellion about it.
‘What can you do? Trace the impulse to do something back to its source rather than following it to the object. Remind yourself that the impulse arises in you. The question is always: where does the mind come from? Not: where is it going?’

RS23168eeIf Consciousness Is All There Is, How Can It Be Veiled?Rupert Spira2024-10-06 | Consciousness is all there is, so all appearances in consciousness share its true nature – even appearances such as grief, pain or sorrow. So, when it comes to the qualities that are inherently the nature of being – happiness, peace and love – isn’t it possible to view them the same way we view other appearances within being?
Rupert says: ‘It is possible, and that would be a mistake. Everything is an appearance of being, because aware being or consciousness is the only reality that is present. This is similar to how a landscape that appears in a movie is an appearance of the screen. It’s just our belief that the landscape is a landscape that seems to make it veil the screen.
‘Even sorrow, loneliness and anxiety are appearances of being. When we experience being filtered through the sense of separation, it’s experienced as sorrow or loneliness. And when we experience being unfiltered through the sense of separation, it is experienced as peace, joy or love. There’s no real veiling and therefore no real ignorance.’

RS23159gWhy Does Evil Exist If Love Is All There Is?Rupert Spira2024-10-04 | Why does evil exist if love is all there is? How is it possible for evil to appear, or seem to appear, if the nature of all that is is inherently good?
Rupert says: ‘The reason is because God can only experience manifestation through the localised perspective of each of our minds. But in doing so, God seems to become a finite mind or separate self – that’s each of us. But if we believe that we are separate and think that others are others, that enables us to behave towards them in unloving ways.
‘That is why so-called evil is always from the point of view of the individual. The individual who believes themselves to be an individual rather than the universal behaves in ways that express that belief. That accounts for how evil is possible in a creation whose nature is pure love.’

RS23168ddWhy Can’t I Find My Self?Rupert Spira2024-10-02 | How do you go about finding your self or getting back to simply being? A man says it is difficult because he feels he can’t find being. Why is that?
Rupert says: ‘Trying to find your being is like trying to see your eyes. We can only know something, like a thought, because we stand apart from it as the knower. That’s true of all experience apart from one – the knowing of being.
‘So our knowledge of our self, or our being, is a unique experience. When we say “I know my self”, the I that knows and the self that is known are the same. That is why you say, “I can’t find my self” – because you can’t find your self as an object. But although we never know our self as an object, we cannot say that we do not know our self. Awareness knows everything in subject-object relationship, apart from itself, which it knows just by being itself.’

RS24005gGuided Meditation: The Door between Prison and the WorldRupert Spira2024-09-29 | In this guided meditation, we explore the primordial word ‘I’, or the knowledge ‘I am’ in each of us, and how it relates to infinite consciousness and the finite mind.
Rupert says: ‘The knowledge “I am” is the first form of God and the ultimate symbol of God’s presence. It is the first thing that awareness knows of itself. In fact, it is all that awareness knows of itself. It is the intersection between infinite consciousness and the finite mind – like a door that separates a prison from the outside world. If you go from the outside world into the prison, you lose your freedom; and if you go from the prison to the outside world, you regain your freedom.
‘And as infinite awareness passes through the doorway, it seems to become a finite mind located in a body and in time and space. But in doing so, it leaves a trace of itself in the finite mind as the pure knowledge “I am”. Thus the knowledge “I am” that each of us as a person seems to have within is, in fact, a hint of the Beloved in us.’

RS24087MCan the Finite Mind Know Infinite Consciousness?Rupert Spira2024-09-27 | Can the finite mind know or access infinite consciousness? Or, said in a different way, does the knowledge ‘I am’ appear in our minds?
Rupert says: ‘There really is no finite mind per se. The finite mind is just an apparent limitation of infinite consciousness. It thinks the knowledge “I am” is inside itself, but it doesn’t have access to infinite consciousness because everything it knows is filtered through its limitations – so everything it knows is finite.
‘But all there is to the mind is consciousness. The knowing with which the mind knows, is infinite consciousness. And if you look at the knowing inside the finite mind, much of it is coloured with thought and perception that makes it seem finite. But there’s a part of the finite mind that is not coloured – that’s infinite consciousness shining – that’s the knowledge “I am”.’

RS23116iSharing Our Innate PeaceRupert Spira2024-09-25 | What is the best way to help others experience their innate peace? When someone is troubled, what can we say or do to assist and support them?
Rupert says: ‘Just by being at peace in their presence. If you are established in being and as being, you will take them to their true nature subliminally. That’s all they want. The real content of your help is the non-verbal communication of imperturbable peace and causeless joy.
‘It’s the “peace that passeth understanding”, the peace that can’t be touched by what does or does not happen in experience. The greatest gift you can give anyone is to give them a taste of their innate peace. And all you need to do to do that is to be at peace yourself. Peace is contagious – you catch it very easily.’

RS23056fThoughts, Thinking and KnowingRupert Spira2024-09-22 | What are thoughts? What are thoughts made of? How are they explained in terms of the consciousness-only model? And how can we explore thought experientially?
Rupert says: ‘If you’re experiencing a thought, you must be experiencing its reality, or what it’s made of. But, if you reach out and, so to speak, touch the thoughts, you never find them. All you find is knowing, just as all you find when you reach out and touch the landscape [in a movie], is the screen. So, there are no such things as thoughts. There is only consciousness.
‘You will recognise this is true of thoughts, feelings, sensations and perceptions. All there is is one infinite, indivisible whole or reality made of consciousness, or being. Let this recognition penetrate deeply into your mind, your heart and your body so that this consciousness-only model really sinks in – until it’s your lived and felt experience.

RS23137bNothing ExistsRupert Spira2024-09-20 | Ajātivāda is the contention that nothing exists or even seems to exist. But how can we say that when it obviously contradicts our experience? Vivartavāda, at least, acknowledges that the world seems to exist. How can we make sense of this?
Rupert says: ‘If the infinite is all that really is, then its point of view must be the only real point of view. And from its point of view, not only can there not be anything other than itself, but it cannot experience even the appearance of anything other than itself – because to experience an appearance, one must do so from a finite point of view.
‘So, in the infinite’s pure experience of itself, there is no manifestation or even the appearance of manifestation.Whereas from our finite, limited, localised points of view, there is most definitely the appearance of a world, even if we then question the reality of that appearance as we do here.’

RS23168cWhat Is Our Highest Purpose?Rupert Spira2024-09-18 | This discussion about our highest purpose and God’s purpose starts with a question relating to Rupert’s dream analogy: Is there an intelligence within infinite consciousness that reflects on and discerns what actions are motivated by love?
Rupert says ‘The intelligence that your mind has to discriminate between actions that are motivated by love and those that are not is the intelligence that is innate in God’s mind. Your discriminating faculties are a reflection of that intelligence, and therefore your discrimination is used in service of that infinite intelligence – another name for which is “love”.
‘Infinite being has no purpose. There would have to be two things for there to be a purpose – how things are now, and how things are in the future. In God’s mind there’s just itself. There’s nowhere to go, nothing to become and nothing to achieve. But, as soon as God’s infinite mind is localised as an apparently separate self, the duality and sense of purpose that attends it begins.
‘So, what would the ultimate purpose of a human being be? It would be to reflect the nature of reality, or the unity of being, before it is refracted into a finite mind. What does that look like in a human mind? Prayer and praise. RS22166eFeeling the World’s Suffering as Our OwnRupert Spira2024-09-15 | A man asks about our responsibility to help alleviate suffering in the world. As a psychotherapist, he often feels overwhelmed by the trauma he faces in his work. What can he do?
Rupert says: ‘I do think we have a sacred responsibility to share the non-dual understanding in one way or another. It’s really inevitable: to the extent that we feel another’s being as our own, if they suffer, we suffer. And for exactly the same reason that we seek to alleviate our own suffering, so we would seek to alleviate another’s suffering.
‘But if you feel debilitated by the suffering, you have to go back to that place in yourself that is inherently free of suffering. Because it’s only when you’re speaking or acting from that place that you’re really helping others to be free of their suffering.’

#rupertspira #nonduality #happiness #natureofreality #consciousness #awareness #meditation #guidedmeditationCan I Know What I Am?Rupert Spira2024-09-15 | If there is no person present in being, or consciousness, how is it possible to know yourself? A man says that seeing the illusory nature of the person has left him with a sense of uncertainty. How can he know who or what he is?
Rupert says: ‘Don’t worry about knowing what you are. Go to the experience from which you say with absolute certainty “I am” – because you are certain of that. In fact, that experience is really the only element of your experience that is absolutely certain.
Yet, when you try to say something about it, you cannot say a single word. That is because there is nothing objective there. It has no defining features or qualities, so you cannot describe it. So, the mind just says, “I don’t know what I am”. And even though you can only describe what you are in negative terms, or with silence, you not only know that you are, you know what you are.’

RS23030fNothing Ever HappensRupert Spira2024-09-13 | A woman seeks clarity regarding the ideas that nothing ever happens and nothing exists. Are these statements true, and what are their implications?
Rupert says: ‘Yes, they are true and the two go together; if nothing exists, there’s no question of anything happening. Things seem to happen for the finite mind, but nothing ever happens for the one infinite reality. You get a taste of this when you fall asleep at night. It’s eleven o’clock. You fall asleep, have a long dream, and when you wake up, you look at your clock and it’s one minute past eleven. Did anything really happen?
‘Years ago, I had an elderly friend who was dying. I asked him what it was like looking back on his life. He said, “I look back, and it’s like a dream”. Previously, he thought that his life was substantial and that being was insubstantial, but now he felt that being was the one substantial element of his experience. Being touches everything, but nothing touches it. It is never tarnished or hurt, and it never ages or changes. It’s in this context that it is said that nothing ever happens.’

RS23168ffThe Dissolution of the EgoRupert Spira2024-09-11 | In this conversation about the dissolution of the ego, a woman asks about a fearful experience where she felt that the boundaries of her body were dissolving. Is that something she is supposed to feel?
Rupert says: ‘First of all, there is nothing you are supposed to be feeling. The understanding may take a completely different shape in somebody else, but for you there is this strong feeling of your body dissolving. But that’s not what is problematic – the real problem is the fear that you are experiencing. But that’s a good sign. Your understanding has taken you to one of the core emotions that defines the separate self – the fear of disappearance.
‘See that it’s not really your being that is threatened. Throughout this process, your being remains the same. So when you feel this fear, go to your being – and as that one, turn towards the dissolving feeling in the body and the fear that accompanies it and welcome it. Then it will lose its power over you and, in time, as a byproduct of this understanding, it will leave you.

RS22066bWhat Prevents Us from Feeling Peace?Rupert Spira2024-09-08 | What prevents us from feeling peace and maintaining a peaceful state of mind when life gets difficult? And how can we get back in touch with our innate peace and return to equanimity?
Rupert says: ‘Peace is not a state of mind, it is our natural condition. States of mind come and go, but peace is always there. What prevents us from feeling peace is the discrepancy between a current experience and what we want. That propels us into seeking for what we want in the future. We turn away from our innate peace because we imagine that we will find it when we get what we want.
‘But what we really want is not what we want – what we really want is peace. The moment you accept your situation, you stop projecting peace into the future. And when there’s no projection into the future, we come back to the now, and our innate peace shines.’

In other words, is the dissolution of the ego or separate self a single occurrence, or is it an ongoing process?
Rupert says: ‘Very occasionally, this happens just once. But for most of us, it’s a series of near-death experiences. We get a glimpse of our true nature and if, for the sake of this conversation, we credit the separate self with an existence of its own, we can say that it dies as a result of this glimpse.
‘But in almost all cases, through force of habit, the separate self reconfigures itself again. We find something that brings us back to our being and then the separate self reconfigures itself again. So, for some time there is this back and forth. But every time we go back to our true nature, we weaken the power that objective experience has to take us away from our self. In other words, we become established in our true nature.’

RS23107bThe Community’s Role in the Evolution of the TeachingRupert Spira2024-09-04 | Does the community centred on the non-dual teaching play a role in the evolution of the teaching?
Rupert says: ‘A misunderstanding I had in the early days was that the teacher would come into a meeting such as this with some extraordinary knowledge and disseminate it like a history professor. It’s not like that. It doesn’t happen on its own. The teaching happens in response to the quality of the depth of love and interest that you all bring.
‘When I’m on my own, I’m not formulating these ideas. It happens out of our interaction. You give me permission to do this. That’s the way God lets me know to keep going. But he says it through all of you. I feel that the community and the teaching are taking off together, and that’s something that really brings me to my knees.’

RS23018axGuided Meditation: ‘I Am’ Is the Highest TruthRupert Spira2024-09-01 | Why is ‘I am’ considered the highest truth, the ultimate knowledge and the culmination of all experience in philosophy, religion and spiritual traditions?
Rupert says: ‘Everything we know through the mind appears in accordance with the limitations of that mind. So, when we look at the world through the mind, we can never know what it really is. Exactly the same is true if we want to look at our self. In order to know the nature of awareness, we cannot look at it through the faculties of thinking and perceiving. The only absolutely true knowledge would be awareness’s knowledge of itself.
‘Awareness’s experience of itself is the experience that we refer to when we say “I am”. It is the ordinary, familiar, intimate experience that is present for each of us now. It is the most profound experience one can ever have, and we are actually having it all the time. And it is the only experience that does not take place through the mind. Thus the words “I am” are the highest truth.’

RS24086MTouching EternityRupert Spira2024-08-30 | A woman says she felt like she was touching eternity during one of Rupert’s guided meditations. She asks him to explain what happened. And how does that fit in with what he says about being and abiding?
Rupert says: ‘You’re right, you did fall out of time and into eternity. That’s an interpretation that makes a concession to the separate self – there’s really no ‘you’ to fall out of time. It’s just a poetic way of saying that you sunk deeper into being. And as you did, all the finest layers of experience dissolved – even the very subtle, but deep belief that time really exists and that we are abiding in time fell away for you.
‘And when the mind, which is not actually present during the experience, rises again, it tries to make sense of the experience in terms of time and space. But it can’t quite do it, so it says something vaguely rational, but half poetic, like “I fell out of time into eternity”. The power of a statement like that, because it is informed by the experience, is that it can take the listener directly to the experience.

Rupert says: ‘If we have a project that arises on behalf of a separate self and is in some way trying to acquire something for the separate self or trying to express the separate self, then we’re working out of alignment with the whole and conflicting with reality – therefore, we get thwarted.
‘But if our project comes from love and understanding, then we’re working in line with the whole, and therefore, the universe will very likely make whatever is necessary available to enable us to carry out this project – because its source is not personal; it comes from love and understanding.’

#rupertspira #nonduality #happiness #natureofreality #consciousness #awareness #meditation #guidedmeditationIf I’m Conscious in Deep Sleep, Why Can’t I Remember It?Rupert Spira2024-08-23 | In this discussion about sleep and consciousness a man asks why, if we are conscious in deep sleep, we can’t remember it. The conversation also explores the relationship among pure being or deep sleep, the dream state and the waking state.
Rupert says: ‘Deep sleep is pure awareness of being. When thoughts and images are added, we call it the dream state. When sensations and perceptions are added, we call it the waking state. We have a deep belief, from the point of view of the waking state, that deep sleep is the absence of awareness. Therefore, we think we do not have the experience of being in deep sleep. But that’s just what the waking state tells us – it’s not our experience.
‘The reason we don’t remember deep sleep is because we can only remember something that is objective and there’s nothing objective to remember in deep sleep. The mind then superimposes the absence of objects onto deep sleep and says it’s a blank, empty void. But in the absence of experience, there’s just the awareness of being. That’s the experience that shines as deep sleep.’

RS23168bbThe Experience of Love Is Always the SameRupert Spira2024-08-21 | A woman asks about love and non-duality. According to the non-dual understanding, love is the recognition of our shared being. So, is love universal and impersonal? Or does it also have personal qualities?
Rupert says: ‘Love is like the sun – it never varies in intensity. It’s always the same experience. It can be more or less veiled by feelings, and it has numerous ways of expressing itself in relationships, but the love itself is always the same.
‘So, that which is being expressed is always the same – it’s the shining of being. But the way it is expressed, shared, communicated and celebrated by two apparent individuals is unique to every relationship.’

RS23148lThere Is No Time in MeditationRupert Spira2024-08-18 | In this conversation about timelessness in meditation, a man says that, during a guided meditation at the event, there was a period where he lost track of Rupert’s voice. However, it didn’t seem as though he had fallen asleep or that he had lost time. What happened?
Rupert says: ‘Even if you did fall asleep, pure consciousness always remains wide awake. You just no longer needed the words, so your mind could switch off. And time, of course, stopped because thought had stopped – time only exists or seems to exist for thought.
‘The feeling of continuity you had comes from the ever-presence of consciousness. Of course, the waking-state mind then superimposes time onto the experience and says it lasted for ten minutes. But the actual experience itself was timeless, and there was no loss of consciousness.’

RS23140eThe Paradox of Seeking FreedomRupert Spira2024-08-16 | Do we perpetuate our suffering by seeking freedom? Is this desire for liberation an egoic pursuit? Won’t we reveal our innate freedom by giving up the search?
Rupert says: ‘It’s completely natural for you to want your experience of your mind and body to be in line with your understanding. It’s an impersonal desire – a desire to live this understanding, not just in the depths of yourself, but in your thoughts, feelings, actions, relationships and so on.
‘I wouldn’t agree that in order to find freedom you must stop seeking it. It is not possible to suffer and not seek happiness. They’re the same thing – the suffering and the search for happiness. But you should seek it in the right place. It’s the recognition of our inherent freedom that brings that search to an end, not the ending of the search that brings about the recognition.
‘So, keep seeking it until you are satisfied that you have found it – or, more accurately, have recognised it.’

RS23016bbFinding EquanimityRupert Spira2024-08-14 | A woman seeking equanimity says she keeps being pulled back to old, egoic ways of thinking and feeling, and away from her true self. How can she prevent that and stay with the peace of her true nature?
Rupert says: ‘In most cases, when we have this recognition of our self as awareness, we just get a brief glimpse. However, the old habits of thinking and feeling are so strong that this recognition is very quickly forgotten and we fall into the feeling of being a separate person again.
‘But every time we trace our way back through the layers of experience and have this recognition, the capacity that experience has to take us away from our self weakens. We’re developing a new habit, and we begin to notice that we don’t just fleetingly glimpse our true nature. In time, there’s less back and forth, and we find ourselves established in the peace of our true nature – not just visiting it from time to time, but living there.’

RS23095eHow Can I Nurture the Feeling of Oneness?Rupert Spira2024-08-11 | A woman who feels a strong sense of oneness with people and animals wants to know if she can nurture that feeling to include nature and even inanimate objects.
Rupert says: ‘If you take away all the labels that the mind adds to our essential being or the essential being of an object, they are the same. Only thought and perception divide the two.
‘Feel that the isness of the object is the same as the amness of our self. That recognition is what we call beauty. The recognition that the amness in another person is the same as the amness in us is what we call love.’

RS23145eThe Path of Perception and BeautyRupert Spira2024-08-09 | In this discussion about perception and beauty someone asks about the path of the artist as a way of living.
Rupert says: ‘The way of the artist is the way through which the subject–object relationship is collapsed, not through reason or devotion, but through perception. The great works of art have the power to do this and, as such, give us a taste of that which is eternally real in nature.
‘In that moment, your mind stops, and the background of being shines. That’s the experience of beauty – the taste of your true nature. It is ananda, the nature of being. Ultimately, that’s the purpose of art.’

RS23011hPoetry: Expressing the InexpressibleRupert Spira2024-08-07 | In this conversation about the purpose of poetry, a man asks for advice about his Chinese translation of Rupert’s poem ‘I Am’. What can he do to ensure that his translation is true to the meaning of the original?
Rupert says: ‘A poem is much more than just the meaning of the words. Don’t think of my version as something static – it’s fluid and, therefore, the translation should also be fluid. In your translation, you are really trying to do the same as I was in the original – to express the inexpressible. And, it’s not possible to do that – you’re always going to fail.
‘But give yourself permission to be bold and free. Having served your apprenticeship and having been loyal to the truth, give yourself freedom. If you feel that you have to depart from the original language, form, structure, or the order of verses, then feel free to do so. Allow your Chinese version to be liberated from the original form and take off.’

They also examine the Direct Path and its application in exploring consciousness, or being; the experience of ‘I am’; love as the recognition that we share our being with everyone and everything; and the evolving understanding of consciousness as the basis of reality.

#rupertspira #nonduality #happiness #natureofreality #consciousness #awareness #meditation #guidedmeditationHow Can God Be Intimate and Impersonal?Rupert Spira2024-08-04 | The idea of a personal god is found in various spiritual traditions. A woman wants to know why Rupert writes in one of his books that God is intimate, but impersonal.
He says: ‘Normally we think of that which is most intimate as the most personal, and that which is the least intimate element of our experience as impersonal. But, it’s the opposite: our primary experience of ourself is the experience of being. There’s no experience closer to us – even our most intimate thoughts and feelings are not as close as being. So being, or God, is utterly intimate.
‘But when describing the experience of being, none of those qualities come from our thoughts, feelings, bodies or our history. None of them are taken from our experience of ourself as a person – they are impersonal qualities. So, being is utterly intimate and at the same time completely impersonal.’

RS23062eAligning Our Thoughts with Our True NatureRupert Spira2024-08-02 | How do we align our thoughts with our true nature? After guiding a man through a process of self-enquiry, Rupert suggests how to deal with thoughts that contradict the man’s experience:
‘You’ve just had an experiential recognition of your true nature. Your thoughts are going into a state of rebellion because that experience confronts decades of conditioning that tell you you are finite and limited. But don’t feel that it’s a failure of the very genuine experience you’ve had.
‘Respond to the mind’s objections with your experience of your self – the awareness of being; with the conviction that you are not finite or limited. This process will take you to your true nature again and again and will force you to explore your true self more deeply. And that will help you become established in your true nature.’

RS23126kWho Am I? The Knower, the Knowing, or the Known?Rupert Spira2024-07-31 | Who am I if I am not the knower? A man says he always thought that the term “the knower'' referred to being. Why then, does the Ashtavakra Gita say: “I am not the knower, nor the known, nor the knowing.”?
Rupert says: ‘In this case, Ashtavakra is referring to the duality of the knower and the known and the activity of knowing that joins them. For example: if we say “I perceive the tree”, the “I” is the separate knower or subject, the tree is the separate object, and perceiving or knowing is the activity that joins the two. On another occasion, Ashtavakra could have said, “I am all of that.”
‘But when Ashtavakra says “I am not the knower”, he is not talking about infinite consciousness, he is talking about the finite mind.’

Rupert says: ‘What’s important is to know that your identity doesn’t define who you are. You’re not trying to reach a state where you no longer have an identity. You’re trying to reach your being now and to recognize that you are the pure “I am”.
‘It’s not the role we play that matters, it’s what we identify ourselves with. All we are identical to is being. But, if you’re a mother, it’s appropriate that you assume the role of a mother. Being a mother doesn’t define who you essentially are, but understanding that doesn’t prevent you from being one.’

RS23140gWhy Is Simply Being Not Enough for Me?Rupert Spira2024-07-26 | Why does simply being sometimes feel like it’s not enough? A man says he previously experienced being as spacious and open, but lately it feels more neutral. How can he get back to that expansive state and feel joy and happiness again?
Rupert says: ‘Being never wants more. This feeling that your being is neutral and therefore somehow lacking or insufficient is a feeling. You want to change the feeling, but your being – or the fact of being aware – is not a feeling.
‘Go back to your self. Go to the experience of being. Sink deeply into it. If you do that, there’s no sense of lack, or needing more, or wanting things to change. That is the kingdom of heaven. That is peace. Rest in it. Sink into it. Abide in it. Everything you have ever longed for lives there.’

RS23163fWhy Have I Not Progressed More in Meditation?Rupert Spira2024-07-24 | A man feels he has not made enough progress in meditation. He says he gets very close to pure being, but not all the way. What can he do to improve?
Rupert says: ‘When you say “I get very close to pure being”, we have two elements: pure being, and the ‘I’ who is close to being. But the feeling of pure being isn’t something close to you – it is you. The feeling of being is your core sense of your self – you are being.
‘Simply being is our primary experience. It is our self. You can’t get close to it or leave it. You have never been anything else nor could you, for even a moment, be anything else. See that what you essentially are is this pure being before it is coloured by experience. You can’t get close to it, develop it, or meditate and find it. It is just what you are.’

RS23014f‘The Practice of the Presence of God’Rupert Spira2024-07-21 | Is what Brother Lawrence refers to as ‘the practice of the presence of God’ the same as the Buddhist meditation practice of dream yoga, or meditation as it is ‘practised’ in non-duality?
Rupert says: ‘What we do here is “deep sleep yoga”. We practise falling deeply asleep whilst remaining awake. But deep sleep is not a state that we enter, it is just the natural condition of being prior to the arising of experience. Our being is in the same condition now as when we’re deeply asleep, but it is coloured by thoughts, images, sensations and perceptions. When we are deeply asleep it’s no longer coloured – that’s why it’s peaceful.
‘Being deeply asleep whilst remaining awake means to remain as being in the midst or in the absence of experience. It’s what Meister Eckhart meant when he said: “to the extent that we lead our life as simply being, to that extent we lead a life in God”. It’s the “practice of the presence of God” or to “pray without ceasing”’.

RS23140dEmpathy Is Recognising Our Shared BeingRupert Spira2024-07-19 | In this conversation about empathy and unconditional love, a woman asks Rupert to help her make sense of a recurring experience in meditation in which she sees the images of innumerable faces.
Rupert says: ‘Use this beautiful experience as a practice to show you how to relate to people – not just the lovely, beautiful people you meet but also the less-than-lovely people you encounter – before you decide that it’s appropriate to put up a boundary and say “no” to a certain type of behaviour or attitude.
‘Empathy, or love, is simply the recognition that behind every face is the same being that I am. Normally, we first see the face and decide whether to love them, but we should first see the being, love it unconditionally and then decide whether we like them or not. Love their being, because it’s our shared being.’

RS23150iWhat Gives Us the Experience of Happiness?Rupert Spira2024-07-17 | Is the experience of happiness the result of an activity, person, object or other marvelous occurrence, or is there something else to it? And what is it about happiness that we particularly value?
Rupert says: ‘The thirst-quenching element in any drink is its water content. Everything else is just a superfluous taste that attracts us to the drink – but it’s the water that really quenches our thirst.
‘In the same way, when we’re attracted to any wonderful experience, we think the experience will quench our thirst for happiness. And indeed, when we get the experience, we find our thirst for happiness is quenched because we feel happiness. But what really gives us the experience of happiness is the consciousness aspect of the experience. It’s the water in the wine. And the value or meaning we derive from it is ananda – peace or quiet joy.’

RS23095lA Simple Choice That Prevents SufferingRupert Spira2024-07-14 | Is there something we can do to minimise or prevent suffering when circumstances render us powerless?
Rupert says: ‘Some circumstances are so clearly beyond our control that they cause a spontaneous surrender. And the moment we let go, our resistance drops and the background of peace shines.
‘Any time you find yourself suffering emotionally, it is because something happened in the world that you don’t like. But the situation in the world is neutral – there’s nothing inherently unpleasant or painful about it. It is you who are saying “yes” or “no” to it. And if you say “yes” to it, you’re at peace, but if you say “no” and resist it, you suffer.
‘So, just make the choice now. Every time you are faced with a situation that would previously have caused emotional suffering, pause, feel the old habit of saying “no”, and just say, “Yes, I accept it.” Make it your practice to say “yes” to every experience.’

RS23163hhhIs Awareness the Same When Awake and Asleep?Rupert Spira2024-07-12 | A man asks about the difference between awareness in the waking state and awareness in sleep. Why does being aware feel like peace and joy in the waking state but more neutral in the state of deep sleep?
Rupert says: ‘The waking state is characterised by agitation of the mind and sorrow of the heart. In contrast to the agitation, we refer to being as “peace” and in contrast to the sorrow, we refer to being as “happiness”. But in deep sleep there is no agitation or sorrow present to contrast it with, so awareness seems to be neutral.
‘But deep sleep is not a state that alternates with waking and dreaming. It only appears to be a state from the point of view of the waking and dreaming states. Deep sleep is just the shining of being all alone. It is ever-present, and it doesn’t come and go.’

RS23148oThe Source of HappinessRupert Spira2024-07-10 | Even if we have understood the true source of happiness and given up the search for happiness in objective experience, we may still feel unfulfilled, unhappy or dissatisfied. Why does our experience seem to contradict our understanding?
Rupert says: ‘Even those of us that have been exploring these matters for a long time need to ask ourselves: “Do I just subscribe to the understanding, or has this seeking impulse really been undone?” Because when our mind stops seeking on the surface, there are deeper layers of seeking that remain at an energetic level – and these layers can’t be reasoned away.
‘So we need to be very honest with ourselves and allow this understanding to penetrate deeply – not only into the way we think, but also into the body and our feelings. Once we’ve seen clearly – not just had a vague notion of it – the utter impossibility that objects, substances, activities, states of mind and relationships can bring us happiness, our happiness-seeking project in the world comes to an end. It loses its power and peters out.’

RS23011j‘I and My Father Are One’Rupert Spira2024-07-07 | What did Jesus mean when he said, ‘I and My Father are one’?
Rupert says: ‘What he meant was that if we go deeply into our self and discover what we are essentially, that turns out to be what God is essentially. In other words, the being in each of us is God’s being. In fact, the only being there is, is God’s being. So the highest Christian understanding is that there is no room for anything other than God. God is all there is.
‘But for those of his disciples that didn’t realise that the self was God’s being, he conceded that they were individuals and encouraged them to have a personal relationship with God.

RS23165cReality Cannot Be Known by the MindRupert Spira2024-07-05 | What is reality? Will it always be a mystery and an unknown to us?
Rupert says: ‘The understanding that objects are real – or that things are known – and that reality is a mystery is the point of view of the mind. From this point of view, objects are real and reality is abstract, and we presume we can’t know it. But in reality, it’s the other way around: all that is known is reality, and the objects that the mind seems to know are abstract.
‘That which is known by the mind can never be known by consciousness because infinite consciousness can only know the infinite. And that which is known by consciousness itself – the one infinite reality – can never be known by the mind. Here, we take the point of view of consciousness, so we say all that is ever known is reality, and it is consciousness that knows it.’
