What have we missed? What have I missed?
After the summer break it’s time for me to hop back behind the bar and look at what I missed while the lights in the vPub fell dark for a few weeks.
It’s interesting indeed.
Whisky never stays still and the releases that are offered for sale are often products of what’s happening behind the scenes. Producers change the value offering to attempt to increase sales and engagement, and we’re seeing this play out with both independent bottlings and official releases.
So, I’ve picked a few.
I’ve grabbed some examples of bottles that tell a tale of whisky’s general condition in 2026, at least some facets of it. Overall, the outlook is very encouraging for those of us who’d prefer better quality, more affordable prices and clearer messaging and transparency. From some quarters at least. Imagine it a little like the manifestation of what the enthusiasts and invested whisky botherers have been asking for over, well, decades.
Whisky is in a phase of rebuilding at the moment, I feel strongly that it needs new blood. As alcohol consumption falls, I think it needs to place itself much more firmly in the realm of appreciation and contemplation. Less a drink and more of an enhancement of life. Less is more. Quality over quantity. You’ve heard it all before, but now we’re seeing things swing hard in that direction.
In this session I’ll pop open a few new bottles and see if the liquid experience matches the offer on the label. I’m looking forward to it, and I hope you are too.
It’ll be wonderful to welcome you there.
We’re back!
