Let’s face it. Learning (and listening) to fundamentals can be boring. And it doesn’t make for good social media content. But mastering your tone, time, finesse and fingerboard knowledge is what most defines YOU as a player. It’s what defines your style and it’s what people most notice about you as a musician.
Famous basketball coach, Phil Jackson said the mastery and practice of fundamentals (dribbling, shooting, passing) - not trick shots - is what wins games.
If you want to be a master of guitar, you have to master how your hands connect with the instrument. Using your ears, of course, as the ultimate judge of success, but also using your mind so that you can have additional access to the sounds that you want and also some sounds that you may never have heard before.
When it comes to raw technique exercises such as athletic finger patterns and picking patterns, some of it can seem stark and un-useful. When it comes to standard scale and arpeggio practice, similarly, it may seem like a useless chore because you don’t want to “just sound like you're running scales” when you improvise.
That’s where the idea of “creative fundamentals” can be helpful. Compose something interesting that by working it up to performance level, it forces you to master a very specific fundamental technique.

Here’s the Sarabande Double from Partita No.1 in B minor.
I have posted this before but I had to attempt another take of this piece - it takes a fair amount of mental and physical stamina to get through a Bach piece without mistakes. I can only imagine the amount of stamina Bach had to write so much amazing music and also have 20 kids.

I'm working on a book that explores all 165 4-note chords possible. Tentative working title, "Exploring the Universe of 4-Note Chords." (what do you think of that title?). Anyway, here are the compositions from the "Hyper Dissonant" chapter.
Out of the 165 4-note chord qualities possible, there are 32 that contain 2 or more adjacent half-steps; Hyper-Dissonant clusters. 8 sets if you don't count inversions.
The book goes into more depth explaining this stuff, but here are the compositions featured in that chapter - One introduction and 8 duets, each featuring at least one set of the 8 hyper dissonant sets.
Here are inversions (if spelled individually in root position):
According to A: 1-2- b3-4
According to B: 1- b2- b3-b7
According to C: 1-2-6-7
According to D: 1-5-6- b7
As a vehicle for improvisation, it's pretty flexible. I demonstrate 8 different tonalities from which to borrow that all contain those 4 notes.
Feel free to use the opening part as a backing track to practice your own version.
It's neat to find the options to see if they sound good, interesting or useful.

Great is Thy Faithfulness is a popular Hymn written in 1923 by Thomas O. Chisholm (words) and William Runyan (music) and has been in public domain since 2019. This is my adaptation based on an arrangement by J. Daniel Smith at Bethesda Community Church in Ft Worth, TX.
