(YES, it starts off rather quietly. It's called "dynamics," otherwise its not music but banging. Anyway, if you don't speak spanish, here is what's happening: after a brief introduction, Pello is going to talk about and demonstrate the various drum rhythms which combine to form the "CONGA" melody. Conga does not mean the same thing in Cuba as in America, btw....)
Pello, El Afrokan

Adama Drame is so intense and groovy
WOFA performed at the Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso, Texas, in May of 2000. This video shows my initial mock-up of a Celtic design based on 3 interlocking triangles. I presented WOFA's lead drummer Aboubacar FATOU ABOU Camara with a different, finished version. It was made from heavier, more perfect and unblemished cardboard, and then each individual triangle was colored Red or Black or Green, with a brilliant white ribbon atop the piece. I have no pictures of the final version...
Before the show at the Chamizal, I made my way to the backstage area, while playing some mellow (Yoruba) Fuji bell patterns in order to accompany my procession of one... After asking to "take me to your leader," Fatou Abou appeared & I put the art piece over his head, like a medallion, so it could hang by the ribbon and adorn his chest...
I then asked if he would consent to give a drum lesson in the coming days? He agreed, and I got (what turned out to be) a private lesson at my house, as well as organizing a group lesson at a local hall. In addition to which, I was able to attend the group's additional local performance, held in a school auditorium and hosted especially for the youth. This audio selection is therefore a part of our area history, and although of poor fidelity, it is interesting on many levels.
One-by-one, the WOFA drummers each play a brief introduction for the elementary school children and teachers...
MY TRANSCRIPTION. Note that djembe #1 is the version he taught at a second class, later that same day, and is slightly different from what you hear on this particular lesson tape. Also he did not show the call during this brief example, nor did he demonstrate Dundun as played by itself, but rather in combination with Sangban.
DRIVING him to and from these various classes, we talked about Afro-Cuban music, because he was looking to take home recordings by Orquesta ARAGON, yes, really!!! He loved hearing Los Munequitos de Matanzas, Afro-Cuba de Matanzas, Los Papines and Pello El Afrokan. He was dancing and moving with great joy.
SORRY, I KNOW THE SOUND IS REALLY "CRUNCHY" AND DISTORTED, BUT I THINK ITS STILL FUN FOR THE SCHOLARS WHO WANT TO DO SOME OBSCURE RESEARCH... And its part of our local history, too...
`````````` Aboubacar *FATOU ABOU* Camara ``````````
0:13, he shows the basic Kuku djembe arrangement (4 parts, high-to-low)... Highest would be soloist, but he doesn't show this (5th) part.
0:58, demonstrates that his previous "bass djembe" example was just a skeltal starting point for fleshing-out a more traditional interpretation. WOW!!!!!!
1;50 KUKU dunduns as played on Congas (with stick)... He uses rim clicks instead of a bell. This figure syncopates when the large drum does its fill. Double-time bell pattern also demonstrated. Abou felt that the bell should just play "tempo." In a later example, Abou used a djembe as his "sangban" versus the big conga as Dundun...
5:02, I'm playing a support djembe while Abou plays dunduns AND an additional djembe part... (double wow!!!)
7:16, There even was a dance lesson, jajaja... That is Abou singing the kuku djembe #1 melody while I record our stepping pattern (we were side by side so i could copy his basic *timestep*)
...And he didn't feel like teaching a song, at that time. I asked...
THANKS TO MY MOTHER FOR TAKING THE PHOTOS AND ALSO FOR JOKING AROUND...
by the way, FATOU ABOU is not in these particular publicity pics. See my other posts for pics of the MASTER DRUMMER...
Longjiang Ju (Longjiang Opera)
Longjiang ju is popular in China's Heilongjiang Province. It developed in the 1950s as a fusion of Northeast China's er ren zhuan, la chang xi, shadow puppet theater and folk song traditions. Performances are relaxed and humorous, with extensive use of colloquial language in the songs. Well-known longjiang ju operas include Shuang Suo Shan and Huang Tang Bao Yu.
