I am not pleased with the audio on the iPhone, but it is what it is.
It's always with me, it's the only HD video device I own and it's not a
hassle to go through airport security like a full sized video rig (although they
still always flag me for a hand baggage check because of my radio scanner).
I really miss the sound of EMD 645 turbo-charged prime movers and the way they filled the canyons with sound, before government busybodies forced the manufacturers to equip all locomotives built after 1980 with exhaust silencers.
1) The program opens at Bealville in the late afternoon with trains in
both directions passing through Tunnel 5.
2) The next morning we are at the Loop to watch a westbound Santa
Fe unit coal train meet a Southern Pacific general freight with
mid-train
helpers. Then a Santa Fe intermodal passes with a Kodachrome GP-35 in the consist. An SP light helper set drops down the loop.
Another unit coal train, this time an Espee eastbound, climbs around the loop and crosses its own tail. This heavyweight has 4 units on
the head end (including a Kodachrome SD45T-2), 6 more units in the middle and a 3 unit set near the rear end.
3) Up near the top of the canyon we see a Santa Fe piggyback train negotiating the s-curves.
4) Moving down to Woodford, we catch a pair of Santa Fe westbounds.
5) Back at the Loop, an SP manifest exits Tunnel 10 and drops westbound down the grade. A Santa Fe leader heads up 3 brand new UP
SD60Ms on an eastbound manifest. The famous "Oil Cans" unit Tank-Train makes its usual late afternoon appearance as it heads for the Shell Oil
refinery in Carlson, CA.
6) An SP eastbound traverses the horseshoe at Caliente.
7) Were back at Bealville for one final train as it passes us and
climbs up and through Tunnel 5.
Unfortunately the engine suffered a piston ring failure further on up the line, leaving her lame on the fireman's side.
The protect diesels were summoned and we see them pulling the 614 and train across Moodna Viaduct.
Next 614 limps into the Campbell Hall yard. Note the steam blowing past the piston and up the stack on her left side.
A Conrail local freight arrives behind SD40-2 6493 as 614 is getting in the clear.
Once the freight is out of the way we see the crew preparing to remove the running board steps and cylinder head to pull the piston for repair.
They worked all afternoon and late into the night and the engine made it back to Hoboken in the early morning and pulled the train on Sunday, October 12.
I had left and wrongly assumed that Sunday's trip would be behind diesels. Being that it was an hour and a half drive, plus gas and tolls, from my home in Bethpage, NY to the nearest point where I could intercept and begin to chase the train, I took a pass. I wish I would have had better intel back then. Oh well.
The last two shots are at Black Rock Cut and Harriman, NY on Saturday October 18, 1997.
L042, Q679 and Q614 at the north end of Greentop, milepost 33.87 on CSX's AWP-WofA subdivision.
L042 was a giant, over 8900 feet long.
Lastly Q197 rounds the curve alongside US 29 at the Bagley Cove crossing. No slouch at over 6800 feet in length. Bagley Cove crosses the tracks twice, this is the southernmost of the two crossings.
Not sure of complete route but the train ran from Danbury to Beacon on the old CNE route of the New Haven and then down the Hudson on the former New York Central main line.
Shown at Hopewell Junction and Breakneck Ridge Tunnel.
Incidently, an exceedingly rare ( for the metro NYC area) 4.0 earthquake, with its epicenter in Ardsley in Westchester County, awakened me that morning in my Queens, NYC apartment.

An absolutely crappy weather day, but it did make for some nice lingering steam effects.
I shot the train at Lehigh, at a spot just below Moscow and a mood shot at night, in the rain, passing the University of Scranton.
Note the multiple slips near the end when 3254 loses her footing on the wet rails. Classic steam sounds.

I was parked right outside the locked gate of the Visitors Center.
First an eastbound drops down around the curve with her engines in dynamic braking. While the eastbound is still wrapped around the curve a westbound makes its way uphill (4:40). At about 11:50 the westbound's two SD-45-2 helpers reach the main arc of the curve. Note how much louder they are than the newer, muffled power on the head end.

7-11-89: Tunkhannock Viaduct, CP Rail East Binghamton Yard, Binghamton, Belden Hill Tunnel
Avoca, PA. Then I caught the head end with a nice mix of power at Mountain Top.
Next a Conrail lashup's engineer sets his dynamic brakes in preparation for the descent into the Wyoming Valley.
7-9-89 A freight passes the camera and enters the Belden Hill Tunnel. This was a lucky catch, as both of NYS&W's ex-BN F45s were on this train.
Two Susquehanna B40-8s were the rear helpers on this train. We see them cut away and beginning their return to Binghamton.

The first shot shows the special departing Passaic Junction.
Next it is seen crossing the Ramapo river at Oakland, NJ. The late Marc Balkin of Mark I Video and I had our cameras set up elbow to elbow for this shot.
The third shot is at Sparta Jct. where the modern NYS&W built a connector from their traditional main line to the L&HR main to run north to a connection with the Southern Tier.
Remember what I said about snafus, well here is a beauty of one. The special struck a dump truck loaded with dirt at a private rail crossing north of Sparta Jct. I don't recall that there were any injuries but there was damage to the locomotive, particularly the plow which had to be torched off.
The last shot shows the return trip leaving Warwick, NY, with the F45 in the lead.

CN 3254, dressed up as DL&W 1271 arrives from Scranton with the last Scranton-Moscow run of the day. The engine pulls away to run around her train. Then "DL&W" F7 637 pulls ahead with the two through cars for Pocono Summit. 1271 passes as she runs around her train. Next "DL&W" GP7 514 arrives with the Pocono Summit-Moscow train. The F7 backs the two through cars onto the Pocono Summit train and then returns to the rear of the Scranton train. The Scranton train departs and the GP7 runs around her train and departs for Pocono Summit.
Got all that? There will be a quiz.

10-18-87 CDOTs New Haven painted FL9s operated a circle trip on the New Haven, Maybrook and Hudson Lines. We see the special at Hopewell Jct. in push mode and then exiting the tunnel at Breakneck Ridge with the locomotives leading. The train was slowing to discharge the passengers for a photo runby.
7-24-87: Amtrak trains crossing the Susquehanna River at Havre de Grace, MD. Later that say, two northbound freights cross the Anacostia River on the former PRR drawbridge. Still later, we see the AutoTrain preparing for departure at Lorton, VA behind three GE P30CHs. The last stop of the day was Alexandria, VA where we see a pair of freights, one with RF&P power, and some Amtrak trains.

2/16/96 261 pushed a wedge plow ahead of her train. Snow was shoveled onto the plow by hand for the benefit of the railfans on the train. There was not sufficient snow on the ground for the plow to actually be employed.
We see the plow train east of Nay Aug Tunnel, at the Rt. 435 Overpass in Elmhurst, at Moscow and at Gouldsboro.
2/17/96 Pulling a passenger special, 261 is seen at the Elmhurst overpass, by the Hollister Reservoir off of State Route 2009, and arriving at Tobyhanna in full sunshine. Then she's seen westbound, west of Moscow, followed by CP 2317 pulling the excursion cars back to Scranton.
2/18/20 261 emerges from Nay Aug tunnel and begins easing to a stop to do a photo runby. Then she is seen from track level at the Elmhurst overpass. Next she passes Moscow station. Then she is seen from across a lake at Gouldsboro. Then she's seen leaving tender first on the return trip, at Moscow, followed by CP 2317 with the excursion train.
2/19/96 261 pulls a photo freight. She is seen departing Scranton, passing Moscow, at Hollisters and doing a runby at Gouldsboro.
This is the coldest, most brutal weather I've ever been out railfanning in. By the time I got back to the hotel each day, my feet were numb from the cold. I was thoroughly bundled from head to toe including a face mask, but I had to remove my right glove to control the video camera. in the brief time it took to take each shot my hand began to ache from the cold. Temps were in the 3º-12º range with wind chills below zero all 4 days.
I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

2371 suffered grate damage due to overheating and was sidelined for the remainder of the weekend.
The next shot is is of 425 working the second trip of the day eastbound, at Hollisters. Then she is passing westbound on an overpass in Tobyhanna, then again just west of Moscow and then passing the University of Scranton.
Then she is seen on the third run of the day departing Scranton and finally topping the summit at Lehigh.

Then a trio of Boston & Maine GP9s comes out of the engine

Next a D&H GP38-2 leads a string of dead U-Boats West out of the

In addition to the types of motive power seen in PT 1, there is a
GMDD FP9A, some monster MLW six-axle units and a couple
of Amtrak F40s sprinkled in for variety.
The two Amtrak trains are actually VIA/Amtrak joint operations, utilizing
Amtrak equipment. The first is the International, crossing over to the
Dundas Sub, en route to Chicago. The other one is the Maple Leaf
heading straight on the Grimsby Sub, bound for Grand Central Terminal
in New York via Niagara Falls, Buffalo, and Albany.
The International was discontinued in 2004. The Maple Leaf still runs,
but to Penn Station instead of GCT.

We're at the Junction of three CN subdivisions.
The first train, CN 432 is on the Grimsby Sub which comes North
from Niagara Falls through the city of Hamilton, ON.
The track to the left is the Dundas Sub which runs West to
London, ON and is the principal CN route to Chicago.
The Grimsby and Dundas Subs join together at the junction and
the line continues Eastward towards Toronto as the Oakville Sub.
There's all kinds of stuff here, RDCs, MLW FPA4s, Bombardier
MPA-27a (LRC-2s) and even cabooses, although they were called
"vans" up there. Even a pair of Grand Trunk units on a freight.
Sorry about the goofy graphics and date stamps on some of the shots.
It seemed like a good idea at the time. 24 years later, not so much.

We see the train at the Nay Aug tunnel and again at Moscow, PA.

No sense in ruining an otherwise good train video :)

Besides the Iowa, we see Chandris Lines SS Amerikanis departing, a number of tall ships and military aircraft rehearsing their fly-bys. Also, the greatest assemblage of blimps I've ever seen.
We even catch two Conrail trains at the tunnel at the base of the Palisades.
People kept asking me questions while I was trying to film. I edited out as much of the blather as I could.
My old man even gets in on the chatter.
Finally I gave up and joined in. That's me telling the lady "I like ships but I LOVE trains".

Navies of many foreign nations sent ships to represent them.
On the morning of July 4th BB-61 USS Iowa, with President Ronald Reagan aboard, sailed down the Hudson River past Lady Liberty.
Another ship anchored in the river fired one of her guns in salute.
The first ship seen in the Video is the USS Mount Whitney LCC/JCC 20, a Joint Command Ship.
Also shown is German Navy Training Cruiser A59 Deutschland
I am in Battery Park. As Iowa comes into view, passing the FDNY Fireboat station, note the small vessel in the foreground.
That is the USS Sequoia, at one time the Presidential Yacht.
Jimmy Carter auctioned her off in the Seventies. Just one of a series of "brilliant" moves that the imbecile made while in office.
Also, note the platform atop Iowa's No. 1 gun turret. That is where the President and other dignitaries were.
