Was not a life I was planning for me.

I wanted to ramble and always be free

Miles from my family and friends dear to me,

The dance is from the early 19th century and is often called "Broun's Reel" and rather less often "Clean Pea Strae". The Duke in question is probably James Drummond, created First Duke of Perth by the exiled King James VII in 1695.

The Occasionals - Hullichans Jig

"Hullichan's Jig" (or "The Hullochan" or "Ruidhleadh Thulachain") comes from the south west of Scotland, but is really a version of "The Reel Of Tulloch", which first appeared towards the beginning of the last century. Though there is a tune of the same title as the dance, it appears that "The Irish Washerwoman" was always used in Galloway and Roxburghshire.

The Occasionals - Virginia Reel

This is a very old dance, probably originally known as "Sir Roger de Coverley" from the English civil war period, but known in Scotland in the late eighteenth century as "The Haymakers". The dance was taken to New England and, slightly altered, came back as "The Virginia Reel".

This dance reached Scotland from America in the late nineteenth century and was based on "The Military Schottische" which was danced to the tune "Dancing In The Barn", hence the use of the term "Barn Dance".

This ever popular dance combines features of The Scotch Reel and Quadrille, and is known in various forms throughout Scotland, the Buchan and Shetland being particularly distinctive. The standard version appears to have been concocted by The Earl of Dunmore and some friends at Blair Castle in the 1870's.
