Diatonic 3rds - Creative Practice Techniques for Jazz Pianists │Piano Lesson 142
0:00 - Intro
0:13 - Ex. 1 - Level 1 (Preparatory)
0:39 - Ex. 1 - Level 2 (Preparatory)
0:59 - Ex. 2 - Level 1 (Preparatory)
1:25 - Ex. 2 - Level 2 (Preparatory)
1:45 - Ex. 3 - Level 1 (Creative)
1:54 - Ex. 3 - Level 2-4 (Creative)
2:31 - Beginners! Start Here!
3:40 - Left Hand Grooves
4:58 - Thanks for watching!
Practice Guide:
Step 1:
Exercises 1 & 2 are designed to establish your fundamental skills. If these seem challenging, don't worry. Simply jump to the 2:31 mark in the video, to the chapter titled "Beginners, Start Here". Here, you'll find some exercises that are specifically designed for beginners.
Step 2:
Once you have a strong grasp on the basics, the next step is to explore the direction of diatonic 3rds in Exercise 3 - Level 1. Here are some pattern examples to get you started, but remember, the opportunities for creativity are infinite.
1. Down, Down, Up (6-note sequence)
2. Up, Down, Down, Down (8-note sequence)
3. Down, Up, Down, Up, Up, Down (10-note sequence)
Step 3:
With Exercise 3 - Level 2, you'll apply a 6-note sequence over a 4/4 time signature. You might notice how this creates an interesting syncopation, adding depth to the rhythm!
Step 4:
In the latter part of the video, I introduce a variety of left-hand grooves and variations. As you practice the diatonic 3rd exercises, feel free to incorporate any of these variations or even come up with your own.
Step 5: Stay Creative! Continually experiment and innovate, forming your unique diatonic 3rd sequences accompanied by your personally designed left-hand grooves.

Lesson Notes:
Exercise 1: Be strict - when you play, try to fill the bars completely. When you rest, you rest - don't play over the lines. (Level 1)
Exercise 2: You are allowed to play pick up notes during the rest period. (Level 2)
Exercise 3: You don't have to be strict with the 2 bars playing and resting period, just keep the general idea.
Optional exercises:
Play 3 bars - Rest 3 bars
Play 3 bars - Rest 2 bars
Once you develop a healthy balance between playing and resting, you can stop practicing this approach.

Well, this is the end of the 30-day challenge. If you had any New Year's resolutions regarding your piano practice, I hope this challenge helped you build momentum towards those goals. As I said at the beginning of this challenge, I wanted to give you a practical method that you can later apply to any jazz standards. There are two other mini-courses on my channel that follows the same method:
Autumn Leaves Improvisation - youtu.be/Qef0Q_LN07g
All of Me Improvisation - youtu.be/N4vkCOBG0Wg
These lessons in a nutshell:
Step 1: Know the chord progression (Walking Bass + Rootless Voicings)
Step 2: Know your scales
Step 3: Add arpeggios
Step 4: Add enclosures
Step 5: Add Rhythm
Now that you have completed this challenge, you will notice that things are starting to make much more sense - especially when it comes to analyzing my jazz etudes in this youtube channel :)
Of course, this is just the beginning of a beautiful journey into the world of jazz, but now you have a strong foundation, so you can feel grounded when you start adding extra elements to your improvisation. If you feel the hunger to dig even deeper, I certainly want to be here to feed your knowledge, skills, and abilities.
This 30-day challenge was my way of saying thank you. Not long ago, I reached 100 000subscribers, and I did not want to take that for granted. The next big milestone is 250 000 for me, and when that happens, I will be back with another challenge/course. (It would be nice to brainstorm together on the next topic ;))
I will take the next few weeks to recharge and prepare some quality content for this channel. Until then, I wish you well.
See you soon.
David

Lesson Notes:
"Think about surprising the band and audience with where and when you make your entrance. This will draw attention to your solo. Your improvisation will sound unpredictable - or less predictable." - Hal Crook
This approach comes in handy when we have an improvisation etude in front of us that does not have any breaks, just like the one I created for Day 28.
Exercise 1 - This is how the etude sounds like when you strictly follow the rest periods. (Level 1)
Exercise 2 - This how the etude sounds like when your next entrance begins just before the end of the rest period. In other words, you play some pickup notes before the 1 bar of Play period. (Level 2)
Level 3 Improvise over C blues
apply all the knowledge you learned in this course (Major & Minor Blues Scales, Hybrid blues scales, Bebop scales, Arpeggios, Enclosures, Ornaments, etc.)
Play 1 bar, Rest 1 bar.
Now, let's turn our attention to ABC blues form, which contains no phrase repetition, just one continuous melodic line. 30 Day Jazz-Blues Piano Challenge Book: bit.ly/jazzbluesbook

Lesson Notes:
Today's lesson is equally important for Level 1, 2 & 3 players. It is about problem-solving. The game of jazz & blues improvisation is infinite. Infinite variations come with infinite challenges and... infinite solutions.
So today, you are facing a challenge from a descending C7 bebop scale. What are you gonna do about it? How many solutions can you come up with?
Here is my first 7 solution that came to my mind when I wrote this exercise. Study my variations, and then go develop your own answers based on what sounds best for you.

Lesson Notes:
Today's challenge is very similar to the one we had yesterday, but this time we will integrate our jazz lines over a C jazz blues chord progression.
Level 1, 2, 3.
Everyone gets the same challenge today. The difference is in your left-hand accompaniment. As a beginner, play the left hand as simple as possible. As an intermediate player, keep a steady groove (charleston rhythm is your friend here). As an advanced player, be creative with your left hand. Make both hands equally important, equally musical.

Lesson Notes:
Today's lesson is very similar to the one we had on Day 18, but this time our "trigger lick" is an arpeggio starting from the 5th.
The reason I felt the need to bring this up today, because you don't want your arpeggios always starting on beat 1. Even if you want that, it is not how it works :D
We need to be able to smoothly transition from scale to arpeggio and from arpeggio to scale during our improvisation. When you improvise, your scales and arpeggios will be all over the place. Don't try to tame them! Let them appear wherever they want to appear :) It is easier to say than done. I know. This exactly why I want you to practice today's challenge.

Lesson Notes:
Practicing long descending scales gave us a solid foundation. Now, let's disturb these scales with some licks.
How to set up a trigger:
Step 1: Choose a note that's gonna be triggered (Root: C)
Step 2: Find a lick that starts from that note. (Done.)
Step 3: Whenever you hit that note, you have to play the lick you have chosen! (Let's do this!)
Level 1 - Play a descending scale from every scale degree, and when you hit the C note, play the lick. Note: If your line starts from the 2, 4, 6 - play a single-note ornament before your descending scale.
Level 2 - Play a descending scale from every scale degree, and when you hit the C note, play the lick. Note: If your line starts from the 2, 4, 6, you have two options
play a single-note ornament before you descending the scale.
start your descending scale off-beat.
Level 3 - How fast can you play this exercise without messing it up?
Level 3 - Practice session - An effective way to practice these lines is to repeat all the variations at least twice in a row, without the help of the sheet music.
Day 17 - Bebop Hanon: F7 Arpeggios

Lesson Notes:
Level 1 - Ascending Arpeggios + Descending Scales.
Same procedure as on Day 15 :) No need to rush. Take all the time you need to figure out the right arpeggio and scale connections.
Level 2 - Play all the arpeggios from every scale degree and keep a steady tempo. I included 7 different left-hand grooves from easy to difficult that you play around with while practicing your right-hand lines.
Additional Exercise: If you feel that you are ready to take your lines to the next level, start experimenting with ghost notes. If you are new to playing ghost notes, try to apply them always on the same beat, just like I did in this lesson. Once your ghost notes are fully under your control, start to randomize them all over your jazz lines.
Level 3 - Choose the most challenging left-hand pattern from "Level 2" and play through all the arpeggio+scale variations with that one challenging pattern. Make your lines sound fresh by playing around with accents and ghost notes.

Take it easy. Be patient with yourself.
Level 2 - RH: Play a Single-Note Ornament from every scale degree
LH: Keep the beat by playing a very simple walking bass
Level 3 - Complete all the previous exercises. Also, I want you to notice that a triplet ornament can occur anywhere. Practice playing single-note ornaments from Beat 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Lesson Notes:
The primary purpose of arpeggios is to outline the chord tones, which gives clarity and direction to your improvisation. This is especially true if you start your arpeggios from the Root or the 3rd. But it is not uncommon to play an arpeggio from any scale degree. It is all up to your personal preferences. My experience is that once you go wild in your improvisation, everything can happen. Everything will happen! So you need to master arpeggios and scale connections from every scale degree.
Level 1 - Ascending Arpeggios + Descending Scales.
Do you remember Barry Harris' half step rule we talked about on Day 8? The same thing is happening here. When you see an arrow in the music sheet, stop for a second and ask yourself:
- Is this a chord tone? (1, 3, 5, b7) - If yes, add an extra half step in between 1 and b7
- Is this a tension note? (2, 4, 6) - If yes, no extra step is needed between 1 and b7
Or, you may want to think in terms of scales/modes:
Whenever you see an arrow in the music sheet, think:
- Is this a chord tone? (1, 3, 5, b7) - If yes, play a Dominant Bebop scale.
- Is this a tension note? (2, 4, 6) - If yes, play a Mixolydian Scale.
Level 2 - Play all the arpeggios from every scale degree and keep a steady tempo. I included 7 different left-hand grooves from easy to difficult that you play around with while practicing your right-hand lines.
Level 3 - Choose the most challenging left-hand pattern from "Level 2" and play through all the arpeggio+scale variations with that one challenging pattern.

Lesson Notes:
Level 1 - If playing enclosures over C blues feels way too difficult, you can further simplify the exercise by:
1. Playing only chord tones over C blues
2. Playing enclosures over C Blues, but your target note should be only the Root of each chord.
3. Playing enclosures over C Blues, but your target note should be only the 5th of each chord.
Level 2 - RH: Scales + Enclosures over C Blues
LH: Two-feel bass line
Level 2 - Pro: To make the best out of this lesson, aim to fully understand the concept and play it without the sheet music.
Level 3 - If you have completed Level 2 and still feel hungry for more, learn this new bass line, and test your limits: How fast can you play without compromising the quality of your sound and execution?

Left Hand: Two-feel Bassline
Level 3 - Advanced
Variation 1 is strictly following Barry Harris' half step rules we practiced on Day 8, 10 and 12.
In Variation 2 Etude, I made some adjustments.
Bar 2: I decided to play an F Mixolydian scale from b7 to b7; then I had two options to arrive at my C7:
a.) A half-step down is the 9th of C7 (Eb to D)
b.) a half-step up is the 3rd of C7
Both options are right - I went for the major 3rd.

Lesson Notes:
Today we will learn how to handle G Bebop & Mixolydian Scale from every scale degree. This lesson is not just about playing descending scales, but to be able to connect them correctly. With these scale exercises, we learn how to sound harmonically correct no matter where the scale starts. Mastering this concept will help you feel grounded once you begin to throw all kinds of complex elements into your improvisation.
Level 1 - Don't rush. Be sure that you understand how these scales are connected.
Level 2 - Jazz Hanon No. 1 - Latin Feel (Straight 8th Notes)
Level 3 - Jazz Hanon No. 2 - Swing feel*
*There is a lot of debate on what 'Swing Feel' really means and how to swing correctly. Your time feel, and sense of swing is a personal thing. All the great jazz and blues musicians have their own feel, reflecting on everything they play. If this is something that troubles you, my advice is to listen to many jazz & blues records and try to imitate others' swing feel. Do this for a while, and then... just trust yourself. What feels and sounds right for you is the way you should swing.

Lesson Notes:
What's the purpose of this lesson?
We have learned a delayed resolution pattern on Day 9, and I am sure that you can have a lot of fun just with that one pattern. However, if you only have one type of enclosure in your arsenal, your lines will very soon become predictable. So here comes another enclosure pattern that will make our improvisation sound more interesting.
Level 1 - Use enclosure to target the Root and the 5th of the C7, F7, and G7 chords.
Level 2 - Learn both Level 1 & 2 Etudes, and you are good to go.
Level 3 - Go through all 3 Levels. If you manage to keep the beat while combining C7, F7, and G7 Bebop Scales with enclosures, you have completed today's challenge.

Lesson Notes:
On Day 8, we practiced C Bebop & Mixolydian Scales from every scale degree, and we learned the theory behind those descending lines. But since 12 Bar C Blues Chord Progression is more than just an endless C7 chord, we have to master the same exercises for F7 and G7. Today we turn all our attention to F Bebop & Mixolydian Scales.
Level 1 - Don't rush. Be sure that you understand how these scales are connected.
Level 2 - Play the scales and keep the groove by playing the Charleston Rhythm Pattern with your left hand.
Level 3 - Experiment with different left-hand variations while playing the scales. Keep it fun.

Lesson Notes:
Level 1, 2 & 3
Enclosure = Delayed resolution
Delayed resolution is a technique of playing diatonic and chromatic neighbor tones before resolving to a chord tone (target note).
There are many ways to combine diatonic and chromatic approach notes before resolving them to a target note, but not all of them sound equally good. So today I want to show you only one variation - the one I think sounds the best.
Level 1 - If you manage to apply delayed resolution to the Root and 5th of the C7, F7, and G7 chords, you have completed today's challenge.

Level 1 & 2
Teaching and being around musicians made me realize that everyone has their own 'method' to approach melody, harmony, and rhythm. One thing is common: The method we follow has to be as simple as possible because overthinking gets into the way of free improvisation. Everyone is different; what makes complete sense to you might not make any sense to me, and that's okay. Your job is to find out what works for you: Is it thinking about modes? Is it thinking about half step rules?
Here are two approaches to today's lesson. Which one of these two resonated with you more?
Thinking about modes
if your descending line starts on 1, 3, 5 or b7 - the right scale will be the Dominant Bebop scale.
If your descending line starts on 2, 4, 6 - the right scale will be the Mixolydian Scale.
Always check what note is falling to beat one, and according to that, apply the right scale.
Thinking about half steps (Barry Harris Method)
If your descending line starts on 1, 3, 5 or b7 - add 1 half step between 1 and b7
If your descending line starts on 2, 4, 6 - no extra half step is required between 1 and b7
About Level 3:
- Choose the most challenging left-hand pattern from the "Level 2 Scale Etude" and play through all the scale variations with that one pattern.
- Play each scale variation 2x in a row with no mistakes.
- Get rid of the sheet music asap.

Lesson Notes:
The best thing about bebop scales is that even if you play it up and down over several octaves, the chord tones always line up with the downbeats. Playing chord notes on downbeats can be helpful since the ear tends to place more importance on notes that fall on rhythmically strong beats.
But what if you start a bebop scale from the 2, 4 or 6? Then the magic is gone. There are several ways to fix this issue, but today I only show you one. Talking about music is like dancing about architecture, so let's just watch this lesson, and I am quite sure that you will understand the trick :)

About Rootless Voicings:
The journey of mastering complex rootless voicings starts with mastering 3-7 Voicings (Level 1).
Be patient with yourself. This is not something that you can learn and understand fully within one day. It is okay to copy note by note what you see, even if you don't understand it completely.
About Motivation and perseverance:
I can imagine that many of you try to hit Level 3 every day but be prepared: life is unpredictable, and you might not be able to keep up with your high hard goals. When this happens, instead of skipping a day, just scale down to level 1, because this is something you can complete within 2-3 minutes.
Whatever happens, just be kind to yourself :)

Lesson Notes:
Level 1 - Beginner: Yesterday we learned about the C Minor Blues Scale.
Today I want you to practice a C Major Blues scale up and down and get familiar with the sound out it.
Theory:
Let's not overcomplicate this.
C major blues scale = A Minor Blues scale (starting from C)
C major blues scale (C D Eb E G A)
A minor blues scale (A C D Eb E G)
So, which blues scale is the correct one over C Blues?
C major blues sound quite different from C Minor Blues, but both are equally correct over C Jazz-Blues.
Level 2 - Intermediate: Major/Minor Hybrid Blues Scales
As an intermediate player, I want you to know that you can create your own hybrid blues scales. Permission Granted.
There are no wrong notes, and there is no need to over-analyze these scales.
The point is to add extra flavor to your basic major or minor blues scale by adding additional notes to it.
Level 3 - Advanced: Improvisation with Hybrid Blues Scales
Option 1: Learn this blues etude
Option 2: Improvise over C blues and experiment using different blues scales.

If you manage to play C, F, and G Mixolydian scale, you are good to go!
Level 2 - Intermediate: Learn to play Mixolydian scales over C Jazz-Blues. (This scale etude is inspired by the Barry Harris Method. To dig deeper, search for this video on YouTube: Things I've Learned From Barry Harris - Episode 1 Scales on the Blues)
C7: C Mixolydian Scale
F7: F Mixolydian Scale
G7: G Mixolydian Scale
Dm7: G Mixolydian Scale
Cmaj7: C Major Scale
Level 3 - Advanced: Here is another common way to play C Jazz-Blues Chord Progression.
C7: C Mixolydian Scale
F7: F Mixolydian Scale
G7: G Mixolydian Scale
Dm7: Dorian Scale - 1, 2, b3, 4, 5, 6, b7, 1 (D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D)
Em7b5 & A7: D Harmonic Minor Mode V - 1, b2, 3, 4, 5, b6, b7, 1 (A, Bb, C#, D, E, F, G, A)
Playing a D Dorian Scale over Dm7 does not make the exercise more advanced - it is simply another approach to look at minor7 chords.
