United States Marine BandFor centuries “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band has honored Presidents with "Hail to the Chief,” music indelibly associated with America’s Commander-in-Chief. Used to herald the arrival of the President, this piece also is performed at the ceremony to honor the newly inaugurated President immediately after taking the oath of office.
Though the Marine Band performs “Hail to the Chief” hundreds of times each year for the Chief Executive, the song did not originate as a Presidential salute. Composed as a stage adaptation of Sir Walter Scott’s The Lady of the Lake, “Hail to the Chief” is attributed to English composer James Sanderson. The melody was based on an old Gaelic air, and the song was first performed in the United States in 1812.
It was not until 1829 that the first documented performance of the music in the presence of the President of the United States occurred. On May 29, 1829, the Marine Band performed at the ceremony celebrating the laying of the cornerstone for the first lock on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. As President Andrew Jackson departed the ceremony, the Marine Band performed "Hail to the Chief" in his honor. Newspapers reported that the music elicited three spontaneous outbursts of acclamation for the President from the crowd in attendance.
Two First Ladies are credited with first instructing the Marine Band to play “Hail to the Chief” at a Presidential appearance. Julia Tyler, the vivacious young second wife of President John Tyler, was an amateur composer. The Tylers entertained frequently and it was at these parties that she reportedly asked the Marine Band to announce the President’s arrival by performing “Hail to the Chief.”
First Lady Sara Polk is also credited with using “Hail to the Chief” to announce the arrival of the President. President James. K. Polk was an unassuming man of slight stature, and his arrival at large functions frequently went unnoticed. To avoid this embarrassment, Mrs. Polk reportedly asked the Marine Band to play “Hail to the Chief” to announce him.
Over the years this tradition continued, and in 1954 the Department of Defense established an official policy making “Hail to the Chief” a musical tribute to the President of the United States.

This march was composed at the request of Colonel Osmun Latrobe, Regimental Commander of the 4th U.S. Cavalry, and was dedicated to Colonel Latrobe, his officers and men. The 4th Cavalry showed its appreciation in a unique manner by presenting Sousa with a handsome parchment, colorfully decorated with the crossed flags of the unit and personally signed by all the officers and enlisted men.
The march is unusual in construction in that it is the only Sousa march with a coda.

In the late 1920s it became increasingly difficult for professional concert bands to find employment at amusement parks or expositions, even for a few days. As the engagements at Philadelphia’s Willow Grove Park were coming to an end, the Sousa Band was happy to extend its regular tour by playing at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey. They began regular seasons there in 1926, and Sousa penned this almost-forgotten march to celebrate their second annual engagement. The march was reportedly written at the suggestion of Atlantic City’s mayor, Anthony M. Ruffu. Sousa probably had the Miss America Pageant in mind; at that time it was known as the Atlantic City Beauty Pageant.

It seems incredible that an institution would refuse a composition by a composer of Sousa’s stature, but this happened in the summer of 1927 in Minneapolis. Clarence W. Spears, coach of the University of Minnesota football team, had verbally requested the march for his school in 1926; the following year the march was formally requested by the alumni organization. When the time came for the dedication of the march at the Minnesota State Fair on September 3, 1927, the delegated alumni representative was out of town, and Lotus D. Coffman, president of the university, was asked to accept Sousa’s manuscript of the march on behalf of the university. He refused, however, because he felt the march should be presented at a university function, not at the state fair, and he was wary of commercial implications. Nevertheless, the dedication ceremony was held, and the Sousa manuscript was accepted by the state fair president.
Sousa used Indian themes in the march, though sparingly, because he had been impressed by the number of Indian names in Minnesota. He later added field drum and bugle parts upon the request of Colonel Frederick G. Stutz, commanding officer of the 206th National Guard Infantry Regiment of Minnesota. The march’s title was chosen in a campus contest, and words were written by student Michael J. Jalma.

Lt. Col. Ryan J. Nowlin, conducting
Lt. Col. Ryan J. Nowlin makes his public debut as 29th Director of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, kicking off the season with a tribute to John Philip Sousa. Sousa was only 25 years old when asked by the Commandant of the Marine Corps to serve as the band’s 17th Director. In 12 years, Sousa simultaneously transitioned "The President's Own" from a local military band into a world-renowned musical organization and transformed himself into a national celebrity known as "The March King." Sousa’s musical interests were often reflected in his programmatic style, as is represented in this performance. At the helm, he brought orchestral music to the masses through wind band transcriptions, highlighted the virtuosic skill of soloists, and unabashedly inserted his own compositions into the mix, a programming structure that is still emulated by the Marine Band today.

Mayor John W. Smith of Detroit publicly requested this march at a Sousa Band concert in that city in 1925. Sousa responded by composing this, one of his most vigorous marches, and dedicating it to Mayor Smith and the people of Detroit. It was later declared the official march of Detroit at a brief concert in the Detroit council chambers given by the Cass Technical High School Band, directed by former Sousa Band clarinetist Roy Miller.
