Wild Camping on the Fairfield Horseshoe in the Lake District!

Backpacking UK 2025-10-05 | I came to the Lake District to take on the Fairfield Horseshoe with the aim of wild camping halfway through. This is a classic, strenuous hiking trail starting at Rydal, or Ambleside. This 10+ mile route is ideal for a challenging backpacking route too.

My backpacking gear weighed approx 12kg including food, water and a couple of beers. New camping gear included my new Fjern Outdoors Stormgrotta 1.5 tent, Thermarest Vespa quilt and Light Tour inflatable sleeping pad.

Wainright mountains include Low Pike, High Pike, Dove Crag, Hart Crag, Fairfield, Great Rigg, Heron Pike and Nab Scar.

It is the best 4 season tent? Personally, I think the canopy isn't a gimmick. It shelters you from the wind, rain and sun.

It is the best winter backpacking tent? The advantages of this tent must be the 4 16mm DAC poles, 16 Dyneema guy lines and 20 pegs. It is built to withstand some seriously adverse weather conditions.

The main drawbacks are weight and pack size but that must be expected for a 4 season tent like this. It is still a lot of money but I truly believe it represents good value for money.

The weather CHANGED RAPIDLY wild camping on the Newlands Horseshoe!

Backpacking UK 2025-09-28 | This wild camp became an unexpected solo backpacking tent test! I came to the Lake District to take on the Newlands Horseshoe with the idea of wild camping on the summit of Robinson. As I was hiking the weather was glorious, but when I pitched my new Nortent Varde 1 tent, the weather changed rapidly.

The strong wind came from nowhere and was not forecast at all. My backpacking gear had a real test in the cold and wind. My camping gear gave me real confidence solo camping in poor conditions.

The Newlands Round is an awesome hiking trail in the Lake District taking on 6 Wainwright Walks including Cat Bells, Maiden Moor, High Spy, Dale Head, Hindscarth and Robinson.

The TRUTH about Paramo Hiking Gear! Does it REALLY work?

Backpacking UK 2025-07-20 | Does Paramo hiking gear really work? I've always been curious about this hiking gear brand. Their waterproof jackets receive mixed reviews. In this video I test the Paramo Alta III jacket. This is a fairly expensive, but really well made, waterproof jacket suitable for hiking in the UK. I gave the Paramo Alta 3 jacket a proper field test in the Lake District climbing some Wainwrights in adverse weather conditions.

In summary, it worked for me on this occasion. Laura's 3 layer waterproof jacket failed where this excelled. However, I still believe this is not a jacket for all occasions. It can get too hot, and it conditions are not right, it won't dry out due to either wind and / or your body temperature.

I think Paramo will always be a Marmite brand. Some people will love it and some people will hate it. For me, I will continue to use it in the right conditions.

Overview
The Alta III is the ideal jacket for all walking activities, including at the highest level.
When walking on tough terrain in cold and wet conditions, you need durable, reliable clothing that will keep you dry and warm. If you are working hard, your jacket also needs quick options to cool you down while on the move.

Functional design, combined with Nikwax Analogy Waterproof fabric, provides optimum comfort, excellent weather protection, warmth and cooling in one efficient jacket.

The Alta III has excellent ventilation, a fully adjustable hood and practical pocketing.

Temperature regulation is provided by upper arm vents (that can also stay open in the rain without water ingress), a two-way locking front YKK zip with internal storm flap, and sleeves that are designed to be pushed up.

Good visibility and weather protection is assured by the fully adjustable wire peaked hood, which is designed to maintain vison in all conditions and roll into the jacket collar when not in use.
Secure external and internal storage allows for safe stowing of map and navigation tools across six well-placed pockets.

Nikwax Analogy Waterproof fabric is more than just breathable, it is directional. Analogy Waterproof. This means it is capable of moving liquid water away from your body and not just water vapour.

It is essential to avoid a build-up of water in your clothing system when you are working hard, as too much retained moisture will lead to your body rapidly chilling when you stop and rest.

In conventional clothing systems, approximately 20% of sweat production is dealt with effectively, leaving the remaining 80% trapped inside.

Nikwax Analogy garments are unique, in that they pump out this 80% of liquid water and allow it to drain away; you are left feeling dry and comfortable.

Our Lake District Mini-Mountain Adventure!

Backpacking UK 2025-07-16 | We came to the Lake District for a bit of rest and relaxation and to go hiking! I love my long distance hiking trails and hiking challenges but sometimes I simply like being in the lake district national park going on gentle walks and taking in the amazing scenery. This walk didn't disappoint!

This 1.6L 115bhp Vauxhall Vivaro drives brilliantly. It's been very reliable too and gives me confidence to drive long distances. I wouldn't hesitate recommending one, I think they're great value for money.

Most importantly, I would invest in a long wheel base model. That extra space (60cm?) makes a huge difference.

The Free Spirits make high quality camping gear that is very well designed and thought out. This solo backpacking tent utilises trekking poles to make a very stable structure with a seamless taut finish.

The TFS Enran tent does use thin materials. However, the fabric has a very high tenacity, meaning it is very strong, and the 7d should probably be compared to a standard 20d tent fabric.

Should you CHANGE your sleeping bag to a backpacking QUILT?

Backpacking UK 2025-06-13 | Ultralight backpacking gear is becoming increasingly popular. One of the items people look to replace is their sleeping bag for a quilt. The question is, should you? I'm using the Thermarest Vespa quilt to compare against the Thermarest Hyperion sleeping bag. These are two top-end pieces of camping gear.

My summary is as follows:

Go with a backpacking quilt if:
You backpack in 3-season conditions.
You want to minimise weight and bulk.
You are an experienced or ultralight backpacker.
You sleep warm or have a good insulated sleeping pad.
You are a side sleeper or front sleeper.

Go with a sleeping bag if:
You’re camping in cold or freezing conditions.
You’re new to backpacking and want simplicity.
You value full-body warmth and ease over weight savings.
You are a back sleeper.

Should you buy an EXPANDABLE backpack? One pack, TWO sizes!

Backpacking UK 2025-06-12 | Should you buy an expandable backpack? Here is a review of the Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor backpack. This backpacking bag expands from 60L to 75L. It is very cleverly designed backpacking gear and could potentially save you from buying a second backpack.

For such a large comfy backpack, the weight of 1210 grams is quite extraordinary. However, I personally wouldn't want to carry over 15kg hiking over a long distance.

Larger backpacks tend to have lots of features. This Sierra Designs backpack does have limited features. However, you can't expect everything for such a lightweight pack.

The new versions come in two sizes. 40L to 60L and 60L to 80L. The new version does address some of my drawbacks.

Its NOT what you think it is!

Backpacking UK 2025-05-25 | I've come to the Peak District National Park to go solo wild camping. I've wanted to do see Alport Castles for sometime. The hiking trail took me along the ridge, then from nowhere, all of a sudden the Alport Castles came into view. The Castles and surrounding cliff edges are spectacular.

I found a great spot for my wild camp. Most people camp on the cliff top looking down, but I wanted my wild camping location to be a stealth camp.

It was the perfect camping spot for my 2 person tent and my camping gear. Despite camping in the rain, I had a great wild camp. It was so nice to go solo backpacking, do a bit of camp cooking and have a couple of glasses of red!

Wild Camping with 2025 Decathlon Backpacking Gear in The Lake District

Backpacking UK 2025-05-18 | I've come to the Lake District National Park to test out some 2025 Decathlon backpacking gear. It includes the Decathlon gear brands, Simond for Mountaineering, Foclaz for Trekking and Quechua for Hiking and Camping gear. My wild camping location is on Fleetwith Pike overlooking Buttermere.

Decathlon make excellent value for money outdoor gear perfect for wild camping in the UK. I've been a fan of Decathlon for a long time having purchased outdoor gear for many sports and outdoor activities. Their gear is properly research, developed, tried and tested before it gets to the consumer.

Their MT900 range is their higher end backpacking gear range. The MH900 range is their higher camping and hiking gear range.

However, the true bargains can be found in their 100 and 500 ranges. The MH100 range is cheap backpacking gear but still does the job well. The MT500 range is budget backpacking gear that is highly capable gear without the price tag.

Before the North Americans wade in, strictly speaking Decathlon's ultralight backpacking gear is not truly ultralight gear. However, it is very light, especially for the price.

Its time to say SORRY and move on...

Backpacking UK 2025-05-12 | Enough is enough. The feuds between us lovers of hiking, backpacking and wild camping have got to the point where they must stop before we damage the outdoor gear Brands and the outdoor activities we love.

Many of us have shown great passion for our beliefs and loyalty to the camping gear Brands we like. However, this has sometimes gone too far. In nearly all cases, this refers almost solely to Durston Gear and Hilleberg the tentmaker. Within these Brands it mainly comes down to differences of opinion with the Durston X-Mid and Durston X-Dome and Hilleberg Soulo backpacking tents.

In addition, there has been conflict with ultralight backpacking gear ultralighters and some fans of Thermarest too.

The vast majority of my comments on these backpacking gear Brands and products have been positive. However, being a reviewer, I must disclose my true thoughts and feelings to give a true representation of the Brands and products. Sometimes, I have gone too far.

With a stressful full-time job and life, sometimes I nibble and sometimes I bite on comments received. In a perfect world of no stress, I would just ignore them and move on. However, sometimes it is difficult, especially if they occur regularly and I'm having a bad day. This does not make it right though.

Moving forward, I would like to offer a truce to owners of the Durston and Hilleberg Brands. Let's draw a line and move on. I've said my bit and you guys certainly have to.

HIGH SPEC, 4 season, 2 person backpacking tent for just £289!

Backpacking UK 2025-05-10 | Here is a tent review of a very well designed and made 2 person tent from The Free Spirits. This is the TFS Tents Stars 2 Pro tent. It's ideal for 3+ season wild camping in the UK. The person behind the Brand has designed backpacking tents for western Brands and is the man behind the premium backpacking gear brand, Pretents.

Positives of this 2 man tent are the reasonable 2kg weight, the fairly compact pack size, low fly, solid inner, ventilation, materials and the expensive DAC Featherlight 8.5mm poles and DAC 160mm V pegs.

Negatives would be it's more of a 3+ season tent for UK conditions, fairly thin 20d bathtub floor and the tent could do with more pegging points for bad weather. However, the optional groundsheet would resolve any potential issues with the floor and buying a small pack of additional pegs and lines would assist the tent in windy conditions.

Facing my FEARS hiking in the Lake District!

Backpacking UK 2025-05-05 | I came to the Lake District National Park to face my fears. 5 years ago we went hiking in the lake district to take on the Lords Rake, Sca Fell. However, when we got to the bottom of the scramble we turned back. We bottled it.

We ended up turning left at Mickledore and climbing Scafell Pike instead. Despite reaching the Scafell Pike Summit, it has always bugged me we never took on the gnarly Scafell climb.

It was great to return to the Wasdale Valley. I love this area with the largest mountains in England in full view. Personally, I think the best way to summit Sca Fell is from Wasdale Head. I ascending up the tourist route before vearing off right up to Mickledore. From here I dropped back down and traversed underneath Symonds Knot before reaching the Lords Rake. Full of adrenalin, I made my way up to the top.

To be honest, once I got started I was absolutely fine. For me, it's the lead up. It was a fantastic experience that I would highly recommend. My tips would be to climb scafell on a dry day, take a friend, take your time and potentially take climbing helmets to.

I will definitely ascend via Lord's Rake again but next time I'll probably turn off after the main part of the Lords Rake to take on The West Wall Traverse to summit Scafell.

Backpacking UK 2025-05-04 | I've come to the Lake District to go Wild Camping. I've brought my new Durston X Dome 1+ 2 tent with me along with lots of other new backpacking gear. During the hiking and camping I'll be discussing have we forgotten what wild camping is all about?

There is a huge amount of camping gear out there and prices are constantly increasing along with pressures to go lighter. I wonder is people are becoming more interested in gear than they are backpacking and wild camping.

I hope this video is a reminder that being out in spaces like the Lake District National Park are far more important than gear. Yes, it's good to have gear light enough to carry and to keep you safe and comfortable, but it's being out in the great outdoors that truly matters.

The Durston X-Dome 1+ tent V1 was a DISASTER!

Backpacking UK 2025-04-26 | Here is my initial review of the greatly improved Durston X-Dome 1+ tent 2. This solo backpacking tent is the latest version with short poles and solid inner. It also addresses some of the issues the V1 tent had.

This Durston tent V2 is much better suited to UK weather conditions and the improvements make a huge difference. Now, I'd happily recommend this 1 person tent.

I personally, experienced my pole insert wedging itself into the pole segment. It took nearly 6 months from when I paid for my pre-order to receiving the replacement poles.

Gen 1 was a HUGE disappointment for me and never got a look in on my Channel.
1) It was plagued with pole issues from the start. Issues include connectors falling out, lower poles breaking and crossing poles breaking.
2) The huge amount of see-through mesh on the inner, and zero solid mesh on the door, made it suitable for only the warmest of UK conditions.
3) Pole ends were difficult to fit in fixings.
4) Large pack size.
5) Poles were exposed far too much leading to breakages.
6) Missing guy attachment points (high and low).
7) Thin floor material.

Gen 2 is a MASSIVE improvement in my eyes!
1) Not only have the poles been fixed but there is a shorter option too.
2) The solid inner with zippable mesh door make it much more suited to UK conditions.
3) Pole ends now fit in perfectly.
4) Significantly smaller pack size. Can pack horizontally too.
5) Extra guy point towards the bottom of each corner will make an enormous difference in the wind. Guy points now on crossing poles too.
6) T-zip inner door is great.
7) Thicker floor material is very welcome.

Update: having used the tent I have a few notes.
A) I have used 2 guys on each corner connecting to 1 peg.
B) Be very careful inserting the 4th pole. The all-in-one pole system twists but struggles to twist back putting strain on the pole system. You have been warned!
C) The interior space is 10/10 for me. Porch works well too. Very well though out space, I absolutely love it!
D) Easy to pitch.
E) Dual zip pullers would be a nice edition. I guess the omission is to keep weight down.
F) I don't think I'll ever feel 100% confident in a tent with such thin poles.

My first thoughts on the Durston X Dome 2 2P. It uses the same skinny 7.5mm carbon poles but for a much larger tent. Personally, I would not want to use this tent in the wind, there are countless other tents I would rather choose. However, for calmer days, it is very light for the space it provides.

Wow! What a difference! Durston X Dome 1+ Gen 2!

Backpacking UK 2025-04-23 | WOW! What a difference!

This is the new, short pole, solid inner, version of the Durston X-Dome 1+.

It’s FAR more suitable for UK weather conditions. The tiny weight gain is well worth it!

I love the new solid fabric inner with the zippable door revealing mesh.

The thicker floor is a welcome addition.

I love the t-zips (I wish all tents had these).

The pack size is much smaller (similar to X Mid).

The pole ends fit in the fixings now 🙌

The additional guy point to support the Easton carbon pole is essential in my opinion.

De-restricted this off road electric scooter has a top speed of 28mph or 45kmph!

Walking The Dales Way - a day Ill NEVER forget - to the Lake District!

Backpacking UK 2025-04-10 | Walking the Dales Way is a 80 mile / 128 km long distance hiking trail from Ilkley, Yorkshire to Windermere, Lake District. I chose to do the route backpacking carrying all my camping gear. I had a fantastic weather window allowing me to experience the Dales Way at it's finest.

On Day 3 I walked from Sedbergh Farm & Fell Camping to Lake Windermere. I continued hiking through the Pennines with the Howgill Fells to the north. On Day 3 of this long distance hiking trail I completed 28 miles.

The Dales Way - probably the TOUGHEST hiking day Ive ever had!

Backpacking UK 2025-04-06 | The Dales Way walk is a 80 mile long distance hiking trail from Ilkley, Yorkshire to Windermere, Lake District. I chose to do the route camping carrying all my backpacking gear. I had a fantastic weather window allowing me to experience the Dales Way at it's finest.

On Day 2 I walked from Kettlewell to Sedbergh Farm & Fell Camping. I continued walking through the Wharfedale Valley then into Langstrothdale to Dentdale, On Day 2 of this backpacking trip I completed 33 miles.

Solo Backpacking The Dales Way - the PERFECT start!

Backpacking UK 2025-04-05 | The Dales Way hiking trail is a 80 mile long distance hike from Ilkley, Yorkshire to Windermere, Lake District. I chose to do the route backpacking carrying all my camping gear. I had a fantastic weather window allowing me to experience the Dales Way in all it's glory.

On Day 1 I walked from Ilkley to Kettlewell Camping. I hiked past Bolton Abbey, Burnsall and Grassington walking through the Wharfedale Valley and alongside the River Wharfe. On Day 1 of this backpacking adventure I completed 24 miles.

25 Miles. 3 Mountains. 1 EPIC Day! The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge

Backpacking UK 2025-03-23 | Today I'm hiking the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge. This 24.5 mile route consists of the three peaks Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

I started the three peaks challenge in Horton in Ribbledale. This is the traditional starting point. I took on Pen y Ghent first going in the traditional anti-clockwise direction.

It's worth noting there are no towns or villages to get supplies, only the farm shop, so you really need to be self sufficient. Water sources are few and far between to.

I absolutely loved the route, challenging but doable. I'd probably recommend mid-height hiking boots for most weather conditions.

Wild Camping FAIL on the Coledale Horseshoe, Lake District!

Backpacking UK 2025-02-09 | So much for an easy wild camping trip! We came to the Lake District to take on the Coledale Horseshoe hiking trail with the aim of wild camping halfway through. The forecast was fantastic! However, as the hiking trail progressed, the wind got increasingly stronger and colder.

We tried to find a sheltered wild camping uk spot. When I was pitching my new Kuiu Storm Star 2P tent, I couldn't undo the large G-clips. This is a known problem on this backpacking tent. I tried pitching the tent using the small tent clips but a huge gust of wind came along and snapped the pole as I was fixing the centre pole. Had the gust been one minute before or after, it probably would have been ok.

I think the moral of the story is the classic "plan for the worst, hope for the best" and "expect the unexpected". In my case, I would never of bailed if I was on my own. I would have been able to create a short term fix, even without the pole repair sleeve.

Although this is a massive wild camping fail, I still had a cracking time backpacking in the Lake District. The Coledale Horseshoe was an awesome Wainwright Walks route. I highly recommend it.

14 miles hiked, 10 Wainwrights summited, 7,000ft of ascent climbed.

Wainwrights include: Barrow, Outerside, Causey Pike, Scar Crags, Sail, Crag Hill, Wandrope, Grasmoor, Hopegill Head and Grizedale Pike.

Winter Camping Tips for keeping WARM in the COLD!

Backpacking UK 2025-02-06 | Keeping warm when winter camping is easy when you have an unlimited budget to buy top end backpacking gear. However, that is not the case for most people who go winter wild camping. Here are some cheap winter camping tips to keep warm in the cold.

Sleeping Mat - try to buy a sleeping mat that is insulated. You can upgrade your sleeping mat buy adding additional insulating layers underneath your sleeping pad.

Sleeping Bag - try to buy a bag with a draft collar around the neck, a baffle along the zip and a proper foot box.

Tent - try to buy a tent with lots of solid fabric on the inner and a fly that comes down really close to the ground.

Clothing - your head, hands and feet will get cold first. Hats, gloves, neck thingy's and socks will retain heat and keep you warm. Tight fitting, moisture wicking, breathable and warm base layers work wonders and are a great investment. Any high loft (down or synthetic) clothing is great for backpacking.

Miscellaneous - candles, lanterns, hand warmers, etc, are all cheap ways to keep you that little bit warmer.

I missed out an element of the video when editing. This included:
1) Sleeping bag liners are a great way of improving the warmth of your sleeping bag. I use an OEX Furnace Liner ( tidd.ly/4hIXmde ) but Sea to Summit make one too.
2) Inserting your sleep system into a bivvy bag will reduce drafts but at the expense of breathability.
3) Putting a hot water bottle into your sleeping bag is a great way of increasing warmth. You can even use your pee bag!

This is a 4 season sleeping pad with a R Value of R5.4. This means it's a true winter sleeping pad capable of keeping you warm past freezing temperatures.

Winter Camping will NEVER been seen the same way again!

Backpacking UK 2025-01-12 | We came to the Lake District to go Winter Wild Camping. Some say winter camping is boring, this video with prove it's anything but that! Winter hiking brings a new challenge to the mountains. The snow makes it difficult to move quickly and the cold can bite back for the ill-prepared.

However, the rewards are enormous. On a clear day, winter backpacking in the snow covered Lake District mountains is simply stunning. The weight of winter outdoor gear and the cold are soon forgotten with some of the best mountain views in the UK.

Once we got up to the ridge line from Glenridding, I summited the Wainrights, Raise, White Side and Helvellyn and the OS Map mountain Lower Man.

Winter backpacking gear is extremely important. A 4 season tent is recommended along with a warm sleep system. Crampons are a must and an ice axe is advisable. Winter camping can be dangerous but risks can be mitigated with the correct preparation and gear selection.

Backpacking UK 2024-11-17 | Here is my review of one of the true original backpacking tents. Backpacking tents have changed massively over the years, especially with more people wild camping, but the original single pole camping tents still have a lot to offer.

The Terra Nova Lazer Compact 2 is an ultralight backpacking tent that is compact and light yet spacious for 1 person and weather resistant too. It's quick and easy to pitch with good ventilation and lots of solid inner fabric.

The benefit of the low profile comes at a cost of head height. This is a personal choice but personally I wish it was a little higher.

This inflatable WINTER sleeping pad is a genuine GAME CHANGER!

Backpacking UK 2024-11-15 | This winter sleeping pad is a genuine game changer. Never has such a light, compact and warm inflatable sleeping pad been so affordable. Historically Thermarest make the best sleeping pads but they are expensive and they are certainly not fault free.

This Lighttour R7.5 inflatable sleeping mat is perfect for winter camping. Its a serious piece of backpacking gear that costs just £106. It's fully lab tested so the R-Value is true. I have had no issues with this, or the previous R5.8 other than they come up slightly smaller than specified. To be fair, Camperlists said they recommend using the pump sack to ensure the sleeping pad is fully inflated.
