This video was wildly edited down and changed due to a lot of errors behind the scenes, so you'll see Wheatley in full form next time. This continues to be the most complex thing I've ever designed, but despite constant challenges, I'm determined to make it real. While I am sharing the files, I don't recommend printing anything right away The design is still in flux and the cost is high (at least $600 USD). Cost wont't really go down for this version, but I'm designing a mini version (same scale as my Wheatley Crab build) that will cost less than $60USD and will be "easy" to build. Mk II currently has over 150 3D printed and CNC machined parts, which doesn't include screws, bearings, gears, etc.

Circular displays are here! Round screens aren’t exactly useful for productivity, but are too cool to pass buy. Today I’m breaking down a few common varieties to show you how easy it is to get them running with an Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and a regular PC running Windows. All of the displays I've found are linked below.

4d systems - OEM units from Oz, integrated controller with a proprietary, but easy to use language that allows for external control by another host (Arduino libraries available), several flavors available at different price points. Most documented round display I’m aware of.

Pimoroni - Raspberry Pi ready! The st7789 chip is well documented and can also be used with microcontrollers. The Hyperpixel version is easy to use.

Portal 2 | Wheatley in Real Life part 5: The DIY Animatronic Aperture Science Personality Core.
Alright alright, let's get down to building Wheatley IRL ok? Personality Cores, Spheres, etc, are essential robotic stewards of Aperture Labs in Portal and Portal 2 and are required to modify GLaDOS's unruly behavior. I've already built a prototype of her head, so cores are the logical next step! They're plausible mechanically, but I will have to make some compromises so that things aren't floating and clipping through each other.

Today I make some of the first physical parts of my prototype Securitron and try some basic machine learning to teach it to detect actual coffee mugs!
It’s not that I don’t love the other robots we’ve met throughout the series, but there’s just something about Securitrons that I really love. Maybe it’s the CRT faces with V-Hold problems. Maybe it's the flappy pincer fingers. The monowheel. I must have watched the Fallout: New Vegas teaser trailer of Victor digging up the Courier dozens of times when it dropped, and I was just so curious who this new robot was. While I certainly enjoyed meeting Victor in the game, followed by Yes Man and Mr House’s best gals, it wasn’t until the Old World Blues DLC that my love was cemented when I met Muggy: an imitation miniature Securitron with an insatiable desire to collect coffee mugs. So I'm going to build my own working version that will be a 3ft tall robot.

I want to control my animatronic characters as efficiently as possible and while it would be nice to use 3D animation software or other platforms to create custom animations, that's still waaaay too tedious, so today I'm building a remote manipulator, commonly known as a Waldo after an invention from a 1942 short story by Robert Heinlein. This is specifically designed to help me animate my build of Wheatley from Portal 2, but it's a general purpose device that I can use to bring other characters like my build of GLaDOS, Claptrap, Rosie the Robot, or GIR back to life.

She's just an animatronic prototype, so there's lots of things that make her design needlessly difficult and expensive to build right now, but if you want to jump in based on my files, go ahead! Challenges to overcome next time: Tighten up the tolerances of the joints. Test microcontroller drive for the servo with smooth acceleration (I'm just using a cheapo servo tester in this video) Increase clamping force on the main neck rod so GLaDOS can't decapitate herself... again.Building GLaDOS in Real Life: Part 2Mr. Volt2020-10-16 | The second part.
I've made a fair amount of progress on GLaDOS in the past weeks, and now she's got a fully motorized head! Using two new 35Kg.cm servos, she can slide and tilt her eye assembly.
Next time, I'll be adding more head details and creating her neck mechanism. Stay tuned.Building GLaDOS in Real Life: Part 1Mr. Volt2020-09-26 | I'm building a scaled animatronic version of GLaDOS (as she looks in Portal 2). For now, I'm going to be building her head and neck mechanism, but she'll be fully articulated as she is in game. Eventually, I'd love to build her full body, but I'll need a bit more space for that kind of build!
This is going to be an ongoing project as she's a complicated robot, but that's the fun of the challenge. As she comes along, I'll be adding as many plausible features as I can, but I'm curious to know what you'd like to see her capable of.
If you want to see her come to life, subscribe and let me know what you think of her in the comments below. Thanks for watching.
By the way, if you have no idea what I'm talking about or who GLaDOS is, you should go buy and play Portal 1 and 2 right now.

Here's a demo of the first working prototype Snowball. This is a simple animatronic version that allows me to control the eyes, ears, and sounds that Snowball makes in the game. Snowball's main processor is a Particle Photon (which is an Arduino compatible board with built-in WiFi. Sounds are stored as MP3s on a 4D systems SOMO II board and connected to a 3 watt speaker. The ears each have a 1" linear actuator from Morai Motion.
I will be releasing the 3D files so that you can print your own, but there's a big issue with the ear joints, so I need to fix and reprint that. Once I know everything is working and cleaned up a little bit, I'll post em. Right now there are 17 different prints necessary, but I think I can trim a few down.
