Reporter Ashionye Ogene travels to the bustling market of Kantamanto in the capital city Accra to meet the traders struggling to sell the disposable clothes we no longer want. Kantamanto was once home to textile traders making a good living from so-called ‘Dead White Man’s Clothes’, items donated from the West believed to be so good that only dead people would part with them. But the arrival of fast fashion is changing that. In 2019 around 63 million kilograms of clothes were imported into Ghana from the UK, much of it cheap and damaged fast fashion donated by us. But campaigners are deeply concerned about the impact of plastics found in much of our fast fashion. On the beaches of Accra, Ogene discovers a waterfall of mangled clothing flowing from the city’s sewers straight into the ocean. We meet scientists who believe that well known brands now embedded in the sand shed microfibres into the water. Their research has found clothing related plastics in seafood along the west coast of Africa. The Korean Wave is taking the world by storm and K-pop is no exception with the industry estimated to be worth $8billion thanks to its 200 million global fanbase. In the South Korean capital of Seoul, performing arts academies and schools are training the next generation of idols. But in reality only around 1% will make it big. In the Hanlim School of Arts, one of the country’s most prestigious dance schools, Guru-Murthy meets 16-year-old Heesu Chung and her classmate Sui who have been training and auditioning for months to get noticed. Following these K-pop hopefuls Guru-Murthy learns how these teenagers are crafted to be idols with relentless training regimes, scripted answers and picture-perfect looks. But is it all worth it? Guru-Muthy discovers the power K-pop fans have over their idols, and the aspects of life stars must give up in order to conform to the industry’s expectations. For some the pressure of K-pop life is too much. Artist Min Su quit the successful boy band Teen Top after fans complained about his tattoos and smoking. And in a country with one of the highest suicide rates in the world, he explains that two of his friends took their own lives. “This is the dark side of the industry”, he explains. In Suceava, a hotspot for illegal logging in the Carpathian Mountains, Jenne meets Dan-Catalin Turiga, a former government forester turned whistleblower who’s been tipped off that wood is being stolen from a government owned forest. On arrival they discover trees which have been illegally marked for harvest by government officials. On the mountain roads illegal shipments are being moved in plain sight, and as Dan chases down a truckload of suspected illegal timber, Jenne learns how it’s possible to cheat the government systems intended to provide transparency. Days later the police confiscate the truck and its load, and open an investigation. But speaking out against government employed officials and loggers that form the Timber Mafia can be a dangerous business. How much illegal Amazonian gold is in your phone? | Unreported World Unreported World 2023-05-12 | For Unreported World, Guillermo Galdos follows Brazilian Federal Police cracking down on illegal mining in protected indigenous regions, and the network of companies dealing in the precious metal.Brazil exports a hundred tonnes of gold a year and evidence is emerging that suggests almost half of Brazil’s gold trade comes from an illegal source. But according to police documents obtained by the investigative journalism agency Repórter Brasil, Brazilian Federal Police, have accused a major international gold trader of buying millions of dollars of gold from a Brazilian company they suspect of sourcing its gold from the protected Kayapo indigenous territory.Unreported World gained exclusive access to the federal police team leading that investigation, which could have implications for big tech companies using gold in their products. Galdos also travels to the Kayapo indigenous territory to investigate the impact of gold mining on their community. Despite the money being made by mining bosses, most who do the actual mining are also impoverished. Galdos encounters illegal miners who say they’ve been mining for 30 years but earn just enough money to survive. Their work is wet and dirty, and a world away from what many would associate with gold. They wade through muddy water mixed with toxic mercury which increases their risk of kidney failure and serious neurological problems. Professional sumos eat, sleep and train seven days a week in training centres, called stables. We hear that life in a stable is one of servitude, where junior wrestlers are beaten for breaking the rules, and some are made to headbutt a wooden pole hundreds of times a day.
