Tucked away somewhere in the Commonwealth lies Vault 174. A unique Vault in that there is only a baseball field and baseball equipment inside. What happens to the dwellers after 200 years? It becomes the Greatest Vault That Never Existed, that’s what. This is… Vault 174: The Vault of Fields (Fake Fallout Vaults).

Vault 174: The Vault of Fields (Fake Fallout Vaults) (in text form)

Vault 174 is located somewhere in or around the Commonwealth. The Vault is incredibly unique, even by Fallout standards. There are no living quarters. No kitchens. No classrooms. No bedrooms, doctors offices, computer terminals, or even an overseer. Inside the vault is an almost impossibly large field, a fake ceiling designed to look like the sky, and artificial sunlight. There is also a large wooden crate near the center of the field containing baseball equipment. Closer inspection reveals that it is not just a field, but a baseball field.

The Great War arrives and the dwellers enter their new home. They quickly begin to wonder where everything is. Most importantly, where are the food and water. They’re all scared, anxious, nervous, wondering how they’re going to survive in the vault with no supplies. A simple suggestion turns into a great idea. They have the equipment, perhaps a friendly game of baseball could relieve some stress. The game is played, a team wins, and they retreat to dugouts to sleep. When the winning team wakes up, they notice that TV dinners and Nuka-Cola has been left in their dugout. They leave their dugout in an attempt to share their food with the other team. But the food is gone. Through the Vault’s use of facial recognition software, only the winners are allowed to have food.

Over the next two hundred years, the two teams attempt to have children that are bred specifically to be good at baseball. If someone sucks at the game, they are a hinderance to their team, which means they’re probably going to lose a lot, so it’s a waste to keep that person alive. After decades and decades, the dwellers are incredibly skilled at baseball. They can throw the ball faster than even the best pre-war players. They swing with enough force to intimidate God. They can run faster than the greatest Olympic level athletes.

Eventually, Raiders manage to make their way into the vault, expecting to find all sorts of things to give them an edge in the post-war world. Instead, they find death. The dwellers, now the greatest baseball players in the history of the sport, nail them baseballs to the skull from hundreds of feet away.

With the Vault Door now open, the players, calling themselves The Sluggers, with their leader “The Coach”, make their way to the local baseball field, the legends of which have been passed down from generation to generation. Their knowledge of subjects not related to baseball is scarce. They don’t know what “Fenway Park” is. So they give the field a new name: Diamond City.
