The Essential Whiteness of One-Hit Wonders josh (with parentheses) 2023-03-08 | When a band becomes a one-hit wonder, what is it that they reach out and touch?A video essay about whiteness, by way of the one-hit wonders of the 1980s. Stops at Soft Cell, Emmylou Harris, Carl Douglas (slightly out of time), Bobby McFerrin, and the Sugarhill Gang, with a Lil Nas X chaser. In a video about Black people doing white things, there are two one-hit wonders from the 80s that I deeply regret being unable to include: 1. "You Don't Have to Take Your Clothes Off (To Have a Good Time)," by Jermaine Stewart, and 2. The Super Bowl Shuffle, by the Chicago Bears.This video was created as an extracurricular essay for March Fadness 2023. If you aren’t aware of March Xness, it’s a series of yearly March-Madness-style tournaments of essays about songs. This year, each essayist is writing about a one-hit wonder from the 1980s. Throughout March, we’ll read, listen, and vote on the essays until only one remains standing. The tournament will be kicking off at the beginning of March, and I can’t wait to see what the essayists have to say about some of the tracks I’ve mentioned. All clips and content contained within is included for the purpose of critical commentary and should be considered Fair Use under US Copyright Law. Do I think this statement will have any effect? I do not. But I am hoping it serves some sort of talismanic purpose, so that at least I can hold it close to my heart when I write the dozen DMCA appeals I will need to write later.Notes:1. Because I want somebody to be aware of the absurd amount of work I went through just to generate a backdrop, let me explain what you're looking at back there. The broad bars, as I'm sure you've guessed, are the number of one-hit wonders per decade, based on the tournament definition. I pulled my data from HipsterVizNinja's excellent dataset of all Billboard Hot 100 entries, available here: github.com/HipsterVizNinja/random-data/tree/main/Music/hot-100 . The narrow bars are the number of one-hit wonders in that particular year. Some of the songs I discuss are older than 1958, the first year that the Billboard Hot 100 existed. Songs are bordered in gold if they hit the top 40, silver if they hit the Hot 100, and green if they are one-hit wonders. Save Ferris's "Come On Eileen" does not technically meet the tournament definition because it never hit the Hot 100, but they are the one-hit wonder of my heart and it is my video dammit2. The performance of Funkytown beginning at about 5:15 is actually from 2006. All the contemporary video from the 80s I could find did not actually feature Cynthia Johnson's performance, but rather had white women lipsyncing over her vocals. By the time I realized that I obviously should include that in the video, it was too late to make substantive edits to this section.3. Yasiin Bey's comment at approximately 21:00 that "Some tall Israeli is runnin' this rap shit" sounds, at a glance, suspiciously like anti-semitism. A Defense of the First Five Minutes of Tangled (CJ the X Response) josh (with parentheses) 2021-11-30 | In February, CJ the X published a video essay called "Skipping the First 5 Minutes of Tangled." He argues (acrobatically) that Tangled is "objectively better" if you skip the first five minutes of the movie, which is a pretty skimpy backstory of Mother Gothel. He's wrong, though.The first five minutes of Tangled help us understand who Mother Gothel is, why she makes some of the choices she does, and how dizzying it is that Disney somehow managed to take a story about exploitation colonialism and make the villain an indigenous woman whose child was stolen by an invading military.
