SUMMER OF SEVENTEEN are MONIKA KHOT (NORDRA, ZEN MOTHER), WILLIAM FOWLER COLLINS, DANIEL MENCHE, FAITH COLOCCIA (MAMIFFER), and AARON TURNER. (SUMAC, SPLIT CRANIUM).
Wildfires plagued Washington state during the summer of 2017, their smoke drifting westward toward the Seattle area and toxifying the air. Shortly before that trauma, MONIKA KHOT, WILLIAM FOWLER COLLINS, DANIEL MENCHE, FAITH COLOCCIA, and AARON TURNER had gathered at the latter two musicians' House Of Low Culture studio on idyllic Vashon Island with revered producer RANDALL DUNN. There they cut eight songs that capture the makeshift band's feelings of what COLOCCIA calls “a kind of doomsday lurking in the background.” It's as if these highly attuned players had a premonition.
„Summer Of Seventeen“ - which was edited and arranged by MONIKA KHOT, who records apocalyptic music solo as NORDRA and plays in the avant-rock band ZEN MOTHER—is a nuanced admixture of these musicians' sounds and a culmination of all of their previous collaborations. COLOCCIA and TURNER have created eldritch folk and chamber rock for over a decade in MAMIFFER while engaging in various solo and group projects that explore their profound spirituality in sound. MENCHE has been a fixture on the abstract composition scene for 31 years and COLLINS is a savvy explorer of drone and ambient forms. Their ephemeral summit meeting has yielded a masterwork for the ages.
A heaven/hell and beauty/beastliness dichotomy pervades the album—as if a titanic struggle was transpiring in that small studio. The fearsome trumpet fanfare that starts “Chorus Of The Innocents” heralds a baleful fate. With a subliminal industrial rhythm bristling beneath the eerie exhalations, the song submerges us in a slow-motion maelstrom, a horror-film facsimile of MILES DAVIS' “Bitches Brew“. “Perceived Slight” threads death-metal screams through a stark, suspenseful atmosphere, with austere glints of guitar and beats like fists on a casket lid intensifying the dread.
Angelic chants and celestial drones perfume the air in several of the songs on “Summer Of Seventeen“, countered with muted blast beats, serrated hums, jagged glitches, simulacra of grinding gears and lightning. It's as if no good deed goes unpunished. “Spirits Of Redeemer” could be an elegy for the human race while “Cultural Orphan” sounds like a symphony for a malfunctioning factory. The album ends with “Theatre Needs An Audience,” a harrowing ballad somewhere between EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN and MERZBOW; it's a savage rent in the space-time continuum.
“Thinking about this record now,” COLOCCIA recalls, “it seems like we were all sort of anticipating something like this current pandemic happening, although we were thinking about it as fire in the hands of man (literal fire, and also gunfire) that would overturn the normal running of things and reveal the current false beliefs systems holding up most of America.”
That grave aura infiltrates “Summer Of Seventeen“, However, a hopefulness bubbles beneath the foreboding architecture of sound and noise summoned here. The bunker is the new penthouse.

Qui tutto si comprime, diventa soglia; inoltre è dentro (in) e al di là (oltre) del quartetto: è il tentativo di trovare dall’interno, nella memoria sonora dello strumento stesso, una nuova origine, un nuovo luogo dell’ascolto; quel luogo è lo sgorgare, il fondersi di infiniti istanti nascenti in un’unica corrente.
Nel comporre ho cercato di plasmare la complessità del suono ascoltato, rispettandone la materica fluidità e senza spezzare il suo tempo in segmenti; è l’esperienza di un’energia che da sempre già abita il violino e, di soglia in soglia, continuamente si trasforma. Ho cercato di incanalarle quell’energia in un percorso che la rendesse percepibile senza snaturarne l’essenza: l’energia che abita i violini di Corelli, Tartini, Vivaldi, certo non citazioni ne dirette ne indirette ma l’imprevedibile vitalità delle loro articolazioni (tremoli, arpeggi, ribattuti, sincronie e fioriture improvvise) che hanno fatto della scuola italiana, elettrica ante litteram, un irraggiungibile modello di virtuosismo strumentale; poi la tensione, il vuoto attorno e dentro alla costruzione delle frasi, le imitazioni, i pedali, la continua sovrapposizione delle corde…
Come osservando una sorgente lo sguardo viene continuamente catturato dalla direzioni del moto discendente e subito risale, il mio lavoro, soprattutto in questo duo (in-oltre appunto), tenta di rimanere vicino alla “sorgenza” circoscritta, senza scivolar via per i solchi già segnati, più interessato alla qualità dell’energia affiorante che non alle sue possibili applicazioni. Il duo è pensato come unità complessa: strumento preparato e strumento puro, estraneità e tradizione dell’uno e dell’altro, si fondono in una comune articolazione che vorrebbe trascendere entrambi gli stati.
Provenendo da un soffio raccolto nella sordina, inoltre è diventato il continuo tentativo di riavvicinare al “mondo intonato” un materiale sonoro, una esperienza acustica che da altrove proviene; se nel quartetto e nel trio le altezze erano uno degli stati possibili del tutto, qui diventano un ponte alla tradizione strumentale trasfigurata. Il pezzo porta ad uno stato incandescente la materia e nel suo ribollire riappaiono articolazioni, frammenti, incubi, divagazioni che nel fondere diventeranno infine tutt’altro: una voce-violino, un suono/uomo sacro nella sua unicità, senza più articolazione, teso, sospeso, sullo sfondo elettrico, estremo, custodito; cuore svelato del ciclo che diventerà nel violoncello solo (tête) “testa vivente”.
Allo stesso tempo un violino più antico e più moderno, un voce doppia che può contenere anche il risuonare di sé stessa; forse un canto, più antico.

Written as part of the ‘Voix nouvelles’ programme at Fondation Royaumont, Limun is dedicated to Barbara Maurer and Melise Mellinger of ensemble recherche who gave the first performance and have since performed it around Europe.
This is a music made of friction. Often it is quietly expressed. Like skaters in a concrete bowl, the bows of violin and viola glide across their strings, creating hushed, airy harmonics. At other times sharp stops and grinding turns cut into those sweeps and curves with sudden changes of dynamic or timbre. Like many of Iannotta’s works, Limun is in two halves, the second a resolution or response that carries as much weight as the first. Through differing bow positions and finger pressures the first half articulates a musical space that is forever turning in on itself. The second, in which the two page turners subtly join the ensemble, pulls those curves into lines and brings the conflicting physical forces to rest.
Limun simply means lemon, a tree notable for its ability to be in fruit and flower at the same time. Yet Iannotta cautions against interpreting her piece too literally: ‘it simply reflects the period in my life when the piece was written’. Limun was written as part of the ‘Voix Nouvelles’ programme of the Fondation Royaumont.

dead wasps in the jam-jar (iii) is born from a desire to explore depth. For a long time my music has been about creating a surface on which things move, blend, but mostly hide what is underneath them. A surface is nothing more than a reflection, and I was constantly veiling the real mirrored image, probably also because I was (and still am) not sure yet of what this image was, even though I knew what its shadow looked like. The three pieces that form the cycle dead wasps in the jam-jar — for solo violin (i); string orchestra (ii); and string quartet (iii) — try to investigate this matter. While working, I pictured a kind of deep-sea environment, the lowest layer in the ocean, where constant pressure and perpetual movement seem to shape the stillness of time.

La seconda serata della rassegna prevede un percorso in chiaroscuro segnato dall’atteso ritorno a Milano del canadese Scott Morgan, in arte Loscil, tra i massimi esponenti della scena ambient del terzo millennio, che presenterà un live set incentrato sul recente album “Monument Builders”, edito da Kranky nel 2016.
Qui, ispirato dal minimalismo sinfonico di Philip Glass nella colonna sonora di “Koyaanisqatsi”, l’estetica di Loscil sposta il suo focus dagli scenari glaciali e isolazionisti alla perturbante azione umana in rapporto all’ambiente naturale: un mosaico di immagini sonore che diventa una denuncia del disastroso impatto dell’industria, raffigurando in forma libera la costruzione, la cancellazione, la devastazione e una velata speranza di trasformazione di quanto è stato compromesso per mano dell’uomo.
