Having sold millions of records during the decade, you’d think frontman Dee Snider would have been rolling in money, well he wasn’t. By the early to mid 90’s with the rise of alternative music, the frontman was broke and he had a great deal of business setbacks and just bad luck. . In today’s video, let’s explore what happened.Twisted Sister were coming off the success of their third record Stay Hungry, which produced teh two huge hits we’re not gonna take it and i wanna rock. They were about to release their fourth album ‘Come out and play.’ There was big expectations that the album would sell well. Expecting a huge reception to their new album, the band designed an elaborate and expensive stage setup for the tour. Then release day came and the weeks came and went and the album proved to be a commercial disappointment. It went gold, selling a sixth of what its predecessor did. The tour wasn’t much better either. Despite garnering a ton of press coverage, frontman Dee Snider soon realized the press attention had more to do with the PMRC than the band’s music.. Despite playing a few sold out shows in the norhteast, once they left the region, ticket sales plummeted. Despite touring with dokken they weren’t selling out shows, frequently playing to half sold out venues. Dee would add in his book that the setlists the band chose for the tour were equally bad choosing heavier songs and ditching pop metal songs. He would write in his book ‘they wanted to hear fun, funny songs. Twisted Sister’s core audience was gone.”. Dee would also go on to theorize in his book that his band represented everything wrongv with rock and parents forbade there kids from attending their shows, only further hurting the band.. A month into the tour, the band was bleeding money and had to cut their losses so they scrappe the north american leg of the tour. To shield themselves from humiliation, Dee would admit faking a throat polyp and the band soon found themselves deep in debt. Soon enough atlantic pulled the plug on promoting, despite some bigger crowds in Europe. The final straw for the label MTV banning the video for the third single due to what the network claimed was ‘horrific content.’ Dee would reveal in his book ‘to me that was the final nail in the coffin of our career.’ Dee would reveal the true reality of the band’s finances up until this point writing “when you don;t break until your third or fourth album, you are in debt to your record company for all the recording budgets, videos, tour support, and whatever other bullshit they can charge against your account. That has accumulated over the years, you are in debt baby. One big selling record, only serves to pay it back. You need to sustain your career to make money. “Dee seems to clarify in his book he didn’t spend money on drugs, alcohol or be ripped off by management or the label. He would even ask the question why didn’t he curb his spending to adjust for his decreased income. Well he writes quite frequently in his book that his ego wouldn’t let him. He still believed that despite this setback the band was going through, it was temporary.. While twisted sister took a break, Dee set out to record a solo record, that was more pop influenced, initially taking inspiration from bryan adams - he would also nab a spot hosting the pre-cursor to headbangers ball on mtv,- heavy metal mania. But Dee would eventually leave the show after feeling too overexposed and due to the fact that mtv was notoriously cheap and didn’t pay him.His management and label urged him to make his solo record the next Twisted Sister album, which he did. Twisted Sister would release their fifth studio album Love is For Suckers in 1987 representing a moremade the most money in the band . The correct lyrics were supposedly printed in both english and japanese, but fans became suspicious when the lyrics didn’t seem correct.Frontman Eddie Vedder gave an online chat to fans in 2000. He was asked about the story behind the song to which he responded Yellow Ledbetter,"was written right around the time of the Gulf War. That's about as far as I can get into it. It's an anti-patriotic song, actually." But fast forward to a vedder solo performance in 2008. During a Q&A session Vedder shined more light on the song revealing "Wait...you mean there's lyrics?" He would reveal the song was about a friend of his whose brother served in the first Gulf War. His brother died in the war and as a result he received a yellow letter informing him of the news. He didn’t need to open the letter, he knew what is was.The yellow letters are a normal part of contacting family about the death of loved one in the military. Following the news Vedder and his friend then went for a walk to digest the news.. On this walk, the friend, whom Vedder described as "alternative looking", Eddie would be quoted AS SAYING So he tries to walk this off in this little suburban neighborhood. He’s walking it off and his mind is racing and he doesn’t know what to do. He feels like he can’t take a step without falling into some deep abyss. And so he’s walking and walking and he sees a couple on a porch with an American flag. And then he waves to them like ‘my brother,’ and the people look at him like ‘you fucking scumbag,’ like ‘who are you.’ They don’t know. They don’t know the inside. They’re just judging him by his cover. So that’s what the thought was.” That friend would be Tim ledbetter.It was believed for quite sometime that the song was initially inspired a blues musician, 'Leadbelly' WHOSE LAST NAME IS Ledbetter... who was said to be a big influence on mike mcready. There was also another theory that 1) The name "Yellow Ledbetter" is from an old tongue twister in which you try to say "yellow better, red better" as fast as you can. Just a few times repeated, the words become jumbled and you get "yellow ledbetter." It was that that because the lyrics are indistinguishable just like the tongue twister.As for why the song never made Ten, Eddie Vedder would explain to howard stern that he wanted the song on the record, but he didn’t finish the lyrics in time. The song is credited to Eddie, Mark McReady and Jeff Ament. The song was said to be inspired by jimi hendrix’s little wing and stevie ray vaughn AS MCREADY MENTIONS TO STERN HERE. While a lot of bands sang about partying or chicks, Alice in Chains didn’t, tackling more dark subject matter, despite their goofy offstage persona. Bassit mike star would tell the lansing journal “We write about something to get it off our chests. We take out our aggressions on our music so we don’t have to be negative in person. The band would sign to columbia records and soon started recording their debut record facelift in early 1990. "They thought it was too slow and dirgey. There was some discussion about it maybe not being on the record, and we're like, 'F--k that - that song is killer.'" Released Despite some differences with their record label over the inclusion of the song Columbia made Facelift a top priority among a more pop based roster with acts like Mariah Carey, New Kids on the Block and C&C Music Factory. S everal months before the records August of 1990 release, Columbia would send select retailers a free three song EP called We Die Young, which retailers could sell for pure profit. When Facelift came out in August, columbia gave away 40,000 free video copies of band playing the moore theater to those who bought the record.. Then came, the final piece of the puzzle - man in the box. But the first single we die young a song about Jerry witnessing young kids dealing drugs while riding the bus didn’t make a big splash. Alice would tour with everyone from Iggy Pop to Poison to Extreme. Then of course there was the clash of the titans tour playing with anthrax, slayer and megadeth. Dummer sean kinney would recall to rolling stone That tour was a real challenge, because we’re not a speed-metal band,” says Kinney. “During our set the entire crowd would chant, ‘Slayer, Slayer, Slayer.’ But we figured, hey, if we could play for a Slayer crowd and not get killed, we had it made.”It was around this time in early 1991 columbia issued man in the box as the second single. The song’s lyrics took on a few meanings. Layne would tell Roing Stone in 1992 “I started writing about censorship. Around the same time, we went out for dinner with some Columbia Records people who were vegetarians. They told me how veal was made from calves raised in these small boxes, and that image stuck in my head. So I went home and wrote about government censorship and eating meat as seen through the eyes of a doomed calf.

While their career would go through turbulent times in the later part of the decade thanks to their fight with ticketmaster and the band no longer releasing music videos, Pearl Jam have managed to stay relevant for 30 plus years. But in the 2010’s the band would be taken advantage of by someone close to them. That’s what we’re going to explore in today’s video. Pearl Jam throughout their career have been managed by Kelly Curtis who runs the company Curtis Inc.. In 2012 it would be reported that a member of Curtis’ management team was skimming some of the band’s income. Chief Financial Officer for Curtis Inc. Rickey Charles Goodritch was accused of taking money from teh band’s accounts. The thefts were alleged to have occurred over a four year period from 2006 to 2010 when he was fired. Goodritch had begun working for Pearl Jam in 2005 and joined Curtis Inc. the following year. In 2009, Pearl Jam’s management became suspicious after thousands of dollars that were supposed to be paid to band members and crew went unaccounted for. In addition to that Goodritch was also involved in the Ten Club -- Pearl Jam's fan club, which also had cash flow issues. The Seattle Times would report and I quote “He was responsible for, and had complete authority over all financial matters related to Pearl Jam’s touring operations, which included establishing budgets, approving court settlement statements with promoters, distributing ‘road cash’ to band and crew members and approving and paying for tour expenses,” charging documents say.When the band switched business-management companies in early 2006, the new company “looked to Goodrich to handle all tour-related financial matters,” the papers say. The Seattle Times would report that Goodrich was confronted about the discrepancy in May of 2010 after Pearl jam got off the road. Goodrich at the time was filling in for the group’s tour accountant and claimed he paid the band $15,000 referring to it as “road cash.” However Pearl Jam and their management claimed this wasn’t true. Upon being backed into a corner Goodrich claimed he paid bonuses to the band’s road crew, who also denied receiving any money. The band’s management soon hired investigators to look into the matter. investigators learned Goodrich was transferring money from Curtis Inc. to his personal accounts to help pay off his and his wife’s debts and used company credit cards to pay for lavish vacations, personal shopping trips and wine. The theft costed the band about $380,000 US, but when you add hiring the private investigators that number rose to $556,000 (£354,000). Goodrich would be fired by the band in September of 2010. By January of 2011, the Seattle police got involved, launching their own investigation. Kelly Curits would issue a statement to the press that read “we are deeply saddened by this situation.Goodrich would be charged with 33 counts of theft in June 2012 and would enter a plea deal. Goodrich, in 2013, who was 55, would plead guilty to six counts of felony theft. Up until this point he had paid back $125,000 and agreed to pay a further $181,000 in to the band. In 2014 since Goodrich hadn’t paid the band back fully, he was sentanced to 14 months in prison. Had he paid the band back he would have only faced 6 months in prison.

His parents would divorce when he was 7 and as a kid he struggled with dyslexia. In the sixth grade, his teacher told him he would never graduate high school and instead, would likely end up in juvie. He would graduate high school and ended up becoming a straight A student at UC Berkley getting an english literature degree in 1987. Jenkins would start playing in bands in high school first starting out as a drummer.By 1990 he was living in lower haight in san francisco and had rented out his room so he could live in a closet. Jenkins would survive on a steady diet of ramen and coffee that was financed by money he had stolen from his roomates. He’d of course also write music during this time as well. He would refer to this period in his life as “my 1967, my summer of love.”Prior to third eye blind, Jenkins was part of a rap duo group called Puck and Natty who believe it or not in 1992 got a song called just wanna be your friend on the soundtrack of beverly hills 90210.Jenkins would receive a payment of about $7,800 for the song appearing on the show. He’d later admit he had never seen the show and used the money to buy groceries..Puck and Natty’s demo tape soon found it’s way to several industry heavyweights including irving azoff and At one point capitol records nearly signed the rapping group. But when questions over who should produce the group got raised in a meeting, Jenkins walked, wanting to take on production duties himself.It was in 1990 he met another resident who lived on lower Haight area, Eric Godtland. Gotland was working as a management consultant by day and a pretty unsuccessful club DJ by night. He would take jenkins under his wing. Jenkins would tell Gotland a vision he had of starting a new rock band. He already had a name -- Third Eye Blind. And he already had a handful of songs including the track semi charmed life. Some of the music for the song came from his partner in puck and natty who Jenkins ultimately paid $10K to so he could have 100% ownership over the song. I’m sure that guy is kicking himself for doing such a deal.Also around this time, Jenkins befriended a waitress who worked down the street who was also writing songs and they would play each other their compositions. He would play her semicharmed life and she would play him a song called what’s going on. That waitress was Linda Perry of the group 4 non blondes. What’s going on would later be renamed what’s up? And she would go on to have an enormous amount of success. Semi Charmed Life eventually made its way to Randy jackson of american idol fame who liked it, and he took it to don ienner of Sony music who didn’t. He thought jenkins was rambling on the song, and thought, it was too different. Initially Third Eye Blind started out as a songwriting exercise with producers and engineers Jenkins knew, but ultimately he wanted to establish a band. Jenkins goal from the start was to break free of the constraints of indie rock according to the la times. Jenkins would tell the paper “I didn’t feel like i fit into that whole post grunge-noise pop scene that movement to democratize the form by playing badly.” Third Eye blind’s early inspirations included groups like the beatles and college rockers camper van beethoven in addition to the hip hop group The Sugar Hill Gang,Jenkins woulplayed with a lot of guitarists before finding Kevin Cadogan who he’d do some two man acoustic shows with around the bay area. They’d eventually add bassist Arion Salazar from East Bay group Fungo Mungo and the band went through nearly half a dozen drummers before finding Brad Hargreaves. Salazar would credit Cadogan as being the missing piece for third eye blind. He’d recall to billboard hearing semi charmed life for the first time revealing He had it with a stripped-down drum machine and electronic bass on the first non-band demo. It was kind of one-dimensional, acoustic guitar troubadour-y first position thing with basic guitar

That’s what today’s video is all about - the story of why the internet hates Staind - or to put it even better - why they hate Aaron Lewis. Before we dive in, I want to point out something pretty crazy about this story which is that Lewis has been at the top of the musical charts in two completely different genres - in rock as the frontman of Staind and outlaw country as a solo artist.. ***Alright, let’s get into it and take it back to the early 90’s - 1993 specifically - when Staind vocalist Aaron Lewis and guitarist Michael Mushok (Ma-shock) met at a Christmas party in Springfield, Massachusetts. The band’s lineup was complete by 1995, the same year they started performing live, with the addition of drummer Jon Wysocki and bassist Johnny April. They originally gained a following by touring throughout the Northeastern United States, covering songs from acts including Korn and Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Rage Against the Machine.Fans of the band most frequently reference their first two albums - 1996’s Tormented and 1999’s Dysfunction, which had a heavier sound compared to their later records which became more radio friendly and arguably more watered down. It was a chance connection with Limp Bizkit which really helped to propel the band into superstardom. In 1997, through an introduction from Aaron Lewis’s cousin named Justin Cantor, they got on the bill with Limp Bizkit - whose frontman Fred Durst later signed Staind to his Flip Records label in 1998.In a 2000 interview with The Times Leader, Lewis talks about how their music has impacted their fans: “Kids come up to me all the time and thank me for saving them through my lyrics. They say they wouldn’t be here talking to me if it wasn’t for what I was saying in those songs.” In that same interview, Lewis talks about how opening for Korn’s Family Values Tour in 1999 was a big moment in their career and made the band feel like things were going really well for them. ((“We’re playing in front of much more people and things are going amazing. It’s really surreal.”))Things shifted for the band in 2001 with the release of their third album, Break The Cycle, which contained the single called “It’s Been A While” which helped the album debut at the number one spot on the Billboard 200 charts. A user on the Reddit perfectly summed up how this was a departure point for hardcore fans of the band: “ They changed sound towards a radio friendly singalong poppy sound. A lot of people don't even know about tormented and Dysfunction, with their introduction with Staind starting at Outside and It’s Been A While, which while being inoffensive enough, aren't exactly 'heavy'.No matter your personal opinion of the band, their commercial success was undeniable. During their time together as a band, they’ve had 5 chart-topping singles, released eight studio records and sold more than 15 million albums.2001 would also be the time period when harsher critics would claim Staind became “butt rock” - “A style of hard rock & heavy metal music that is watered down both musically and lyrically to garner maximum radio play and mainstream acceptance as urban dictionary would put it. If you’re wondering what other bands fit under this category - even though it’s somewhat a matter of opinion -, acts like theory of a deadman, three day’s grace, puddle of mudd, stonesour, seether and shinedown to give you an idea. I’d also add Nickleback to that list. Staind’s albums following “Break the Cycle” also topped the Billboard chart - 2003’s "14 Shades Of Grey" and 2005’s "Chapter V". In 2011, original drummer Jon Wysocki left the band and by July of 2012 the band had officially announced a hiatus. But that didn’t mean Aaron Lewis was going on hiatus, in fact he was about to go in a completely new direction musically speaking.

It’s a pretty massive accomplishment for Four college dropouts who played with first played with each other at drunken party's and would later go on to become one of the most influential rock acts in history. They exploded into the 90’s with 1991’s out of time and the following year’s automatic for the people both of which went 4x platinum stateside. They were all over MTV and on rock radio, I mean i still here their music played a lot today. If you listen to sirius XM - they’re played a lot on lithium and 90’s on 9. In 2007 they would be inducted into the rock n’ roll hall of fame. In 2007 Stipe would tell Rolling Stone looking back at the band’s career thus far “We didn’t set out for this to be a career. We just knew it was something we wanted to do, and we would stop when we didn’t want to do it anymore.”The band’s original lineup would stay intact until 1997 when drummer Bill Berry left the group. He collapsed on stage suffering a brain anuerysm and two years earlier and announced his intention to leave the band not wanting to tour or play anymore telling an interviewer. I didn't wake up one day and decide, "I just can't stand these guys anymore" or anything. I feel like I'm ready for a life change. I'm still young enough that I can do something else. I've been pounding the tubs since I was nine years old ... I'm ready to do something else. He would become a farmer and has had some sporadic returns to music over the years. ) R.E.M. had stated previously that they would call it quotes if any of the four original members quit but they were still under contract with warner BRothers. Berry urged the gorup to soldier on after he left Unbeknownst to the public and their longtime fans the three founding members REM would perform together publicly for the final time in Mexico City in late 2008. The band at the time had released their fourteenth album 2008’s Accelerate. Stipe would tell Salon “On our last tour, 2008. During that we were kind of going, well, where could we go from here? We could tell we were on an upswing. It was important to us that we didn’t whimper out with our tails between our legs. We wanted to feel we were at the peak of our powers, and the tour felt like that.” Fast forward to May of 2009,, the band minus Michael Stipe would head to Portland with producer Jacknife Lee to record some tracks at Jackpot! Recording Studio. Buck’s girlfriend lived in Portland at the time. A handful of the instrumentals including All the Best, That Someone is You and it happened today would make it onto the band’s subsequent and final album. But the record would feature many starts and stops as the members had other commitments within and outside of music. They also spent a fair bit of time searching for the right studios to finish off the record. They would eventually spend a good deal of time in new orleans and berlin, germany wrapping up the album, titled Collapse Into Now.

How about a mtv judist Preast motorcycle giveaway.” So let’s talk about the contest, since people love ot hear about the mtv contests. Formed in the mid 70’s heavy metal outfit Judas Priet would enjoy commercial success in America starting in the early 80’s when their albums started to go platinum. That success carried over to the middle part of the decade. In 1986 Judas Priest would release their tenth studio album titled Turbo on Columbia Records. The album went in a much more commercial direction utilizing synthesizers for the first time.h. For their tenth record, the band initially envisioned doing a double album using the title twin turbos, with one record being more commercial with the other being harder sounding, but they eventually ditched the idea. The lyrical content on Turbo was markedly different from previous Judas Priest albums, with more less of an emphasis on scifi and fantasy themes and a bigger focus on relationships;. One could argue it was shaped by what was popular in the music scene at the time. Given MTV’s popularity, it was pretty common place for bands to team up with the network to promote new albums and tours by holding contests . In 1985 MTV would premiere a new program called heavy metal mania, which would be a precursor to headbangers ball. The show would be hosted by Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider. And run until 1986. It would be replaced by headbangers ball the following year. Judas Priest teamed up with heavy metal mania to promote Turbo.Here’s the clip for the contest. So who won the contest. Well, the winner would be a college student from the town of Benton Illinois population 6,000 or so.,. The winner’s was Geoff Furman who actually had a twin brother. Geoff would admit to sending in 20 postcards in for the contest. He would win a trip to LA to see the band in concert and one thing not mentioned in the commercial for the contest was that the winner would get two motorcycles not one. They would get the one of a kind turbo machine with a sidecar that was used in the video for locked in. Geoff would tell a local paper upon winning the prize ‘it isn’t a streetbike. Both brothers had never been to california before but upon landing in LA they’d be picked up by a limousine and taken to the hyatt hotel. Upon landing in the city of angels, Greg would tell their hometown paper “Everywhere you look there was a fancy car.” The brothers also appeared on heavy metal mania where Rob Halford introduced them and invited them to attend the band’s show in st. louis where they were given four tickets and four backstage passes. One of the group’s featured in the video was Bran Van 3000 who appeared on the first big shiny tunes and a few people in the comments of that video, requested I do a story on them. Bran Van 3000 would be best known for the 1997 hit ‘Drinkin in LA’ but did you know one of people who prominently appeared on the track’ tried to be erased by the record label? That’s what we’re going to explore in today’s video. Formed in montreal bran van, 3000 is a canadian rock and hip hop group, The origin of the group began with James De Salvo who in the mid 90’s was working at a video production company named propaganda films where his colleagues included spike jonze and michael condry. He also had a side gig as a DJ. It was in 1994 De Salvo he was going through some financial troubles. He had recently done some work with a french canadian artist jean leloup and branford marsalis and he received a royalty cheque. Rather than saving the money, De Salvo wanted to build a studio in his montreal apartment. It was around this time an old buddy from the montreal club scene named EP Bergen was planning on going to new york city and invited him on the trip. As the pair were walking through washington square park they talked about setting up a musical project together and came up with the name Bran Van 3000. The name really had no meaning, it was gibberish. It was on that trip they headed to sam ash to buy some sampling equipment. Upon returning to the hip montreal neighbourhood of mile end, they began working on what would be their debut album, titled Glee. It would have a wide cast of collaborators including a street performer they came across who could play teh clarinet pretty well and they included him on two songs couch surfer and supermodel. Their debut album Glee would have over 30 guest musicians and span multiple genres. One of the musicians who guest starred on the record, most notably appearing on the track drinkin in LA singing the hook would be Stephanie Moraille (Steph-ann More-i). At the time she was going to law school, teaching aerobics and working as a part-time singer. She had originally envisioned becoming a dancer studying ballet, but things wouldn’t work out after she blew her knee out. After that, she needed a creative outlet, so she turned to singing. She fronted a Canadian house music project called Shauana Davis with their most memorable hits being Try My Love and Get Away. She had a friend who was friends with EP Bergen and he was looking for a singer to appear on the song drinkin in LA. She would tell Q with Tom Power that she almost never recorded teh song, because it was the middle of winter and it was -40 outside. She would recall. "If I had a cell phone back then I would have cancelled.. But in the '90s, if you said you were going to be at a place at a certain time, you had to show up because there was no other way to contact anyone… I show up at the studio. [Bran Van founder] James [Di Salvio] shows me, like, chicken scratch lyrics, and then I hear the guitar riff. I'm like, 'Wow, this is going to work.' I down a beer and then I sing the chorus." She drank the beer because she was tired and the members said it would perk her up. She came up with the melody and the bridge and the rest was history. The song would be mixed in February and released in March of 1997. Drinking in LA would be the last song written for Glee. It was sometime in the 90’s Salvo woke up one morning on a lawn in West Hollywood and asked himself “what the hell am i doing drinking in LA?”and that’s where the inspiration for the song came from. De Salvo knew right away they had a massive hit on their hands. telling the Toronto Star “it’s was almost like one of those animated movies where a blue bird swings by over real live footage. It’s cheesy, but i knew in my heart it was a hit.” De Salvo soon took a trip to south by southwest in 97 and It was during a trip to he brought cassettes with the word Glee in helvetica font with his Montreal 514 area code number on them. He grew up in Wembley and started playing guitar in high school telling Florida Today “i was part of the adolescent post--punk anyone in high school can be in a band phenomenon ” His high school bands ultimately went nowhere and and stopped playing guitar while when he started attending bristol university to study French and Spanish in the mid 80’s.. While attending the university he met his better half Harriet Wheeler, the daughter of an architect and teacher who was studying english literature. The first twenty years of there life, they grew apart, David is from wembley while harriet is from Reading. They would be introduced to each other through mutual friends and started dating. Wheeler would tell Billboard “i’m sure we annoyed our neighbours sitting on garden walls talking about all the absurd things you talk about when youre in your 20s and drinking too much and smoking an inordinate amount of roll ups. Wheeler had went through a similar phase like Gaverin, playing in high school bands. One of her earliest influences was the Jackson 5 whom she used to sing along to, tinking she was michael jackson.. It was the tail end of their time at Bristol that Gaverin once again picked up the guitar. The idea was just to create music for something to do. He also thought that maybe he could be a working musician so he wouldn’t have to deal with getting a real job, but rock superstardom or a record deal was the furthest thing from his mind. He would tell the American press ” ‘we were unsure of ourselves in the beginning of whether we really had something. That’s maybe why people who work with us call us perfectionists.” The pair soon invested in a drum machine, a bass guitar and a four track recorder and began writing and recording songs. ' Next, they turned their attention to playing live shows, but they needed to find two musicians to replicate their recordings. Gavarian would recall “We picked friends of ours we weren’t looking for people to contribute musically . we didn’t want to put ads in music papers saying we wanted anybody to play with us.” They would enlist fellow bristol students bassist Paul Brindley and drummer Patrick Patch Hannan..The Sundays music was dreamy and ethereal and by their own admission full of unusual rhythms Gavurian would tell Florida Today “we set out to write songs that don’t feel like every other songs you’ve ever heard. Human Waste Proejct would be started by bassist Jeff Schartoff and frontman Roman Marisak. Schartoff had a rough childhood spending six months in his teen years in a psychiatric hospital according to the independent newspaper. Schartoff and marisak slowly drifted apart with Schartoff remaining in the band. Human Waste Project soon went through a revolving lineup of musicians before landing on their classic lineup, which was made up of vocalist Aimee Echo, guitarist Mike Tempesta and drummer Scott Ellis. Marisak did return sometimes to play guitar with the band. . Schartoff, Ellis and Echo would grow up together in California with the bassist and Ellis having previously played together in a punk band.Fun fact, the band a number of guitarists in the band before Mike Tempsta with 3 of them being called John. John Tempesta is Mike’s brother and you may know him from White Zombie One of Hman Waste Project’s guitarist was named John Montee who was from new jersey. He recommended Mike Tempesta who was from new york. Montee thought the band was going nowheree, so he left.Mike Tempesta wass Jerry Cantrell’s guitar tech for alice in chain’s facelift tour in the early 90’s. Jeff’ Schartoff’s would tell an interviewer “ I was looking to start this really experimental band, cuz we use to do a lot of sequencing and sampling when we started. I wanted something in like the flavor of Tricky and Portishead with like Skinny Puppy type heaviness (goth hop), with a tribalized rhythum and a Jane's Addiction type feel. I never thought of Aimee as a female though, I was just looking for someone who could do the job. Aimee however told a different story. She would claim that that their drummer Scott Ellis didn’t want a female vocalistShe had grown up listening to records while she did her homework being into james taylor, the beatles, and fleetwood mac. Later on she discovered new wave and punk. But Aimee didn’t really think singing was a viable option in life. But that would soon change. She attendedthe inaugural lollapalooza in 1991 with Schartoff where she saw nine inch nails, jane’s addiction and siouxie and teh banshees. It was an experience she referred to as being the most amazing concert she’d ever been to. She would recall . “I think it started when my mom overheard me singing and she said to me, "I didn't know you could sing," and I said I can't but then I met this guy and started this thing with him. Then I lied to Jeff and told him I could sing, and he believed me. It was that whole story of how we were driving to Lollapolooza, and Jeff asked me if I could scream, and I said yes.”Aimee would reveal that 250 men auditioned for the vocalist spot in human waste project and she kept asking the guys to give her a shot,, but it fell on deaf ears. The band soon realized they couldn’t find the right guy so they let her audition and she got the job. . Her experience singing up until this point involved doing background vocals for other groups. Echo would admit she gravitated more towards male vocalists trying to copy their style, because she wasn’t a fan of female singers who did as she referred to ‘The girlie thing’. She would however make two exceptions for female vocalists citing Siouxie Sioux and PJ Harvey as a big influence on her. According to kerrang, Echo was actually a straight-A student in university who dropped out to front human waste project., She eventually became a licensed body piercer to overcome her fear of needles. She was even interviewed by the LA Times in 1994 in an article about the risk associated with body piercings. Human Waste Project’s influences were wide ranging including The Cure, Tool, Portishead, Siouxie and the Banchies, Public Enemy, The Clash, Tom Waits, Sepultura, Slayer, and Soul Coughing. They would refer to their sound as 'Professional Murder Music' As for their name. While many including myself first thought of the toilet, it goes deeper than that. Schartoff would tell the herald newspaper “if you watch the news and really analyze it, it’s bad news.That’s basically what the name is about” Aimee would draw frequent comparison to

While Trent Reznor would lead the band, Patrick would play on their debut album, appear in their early music videos and tour with the band over the course of 4 years from 1989 to 1993. After leaving Nine Inch Nails Patrick would go to form Filter and while they would have a good deal in the success in the 90’s they hit some turbulent times. Those turbulent times would inspire the band’s biggest hit ‘Take a Picture.’ Let’s explore the history of the song in today’s video. . Living in Cleveland in the 80’s Richard Patrick become a member of the city’s music scene playing in a nu-wave band called The Act. He would soon have a chance meeting with another local musician named Trent Reznor at a music store who was playing a new wave pop act called Exotic Birds. Reznor would soon start his own band forming Nine Inch Nails and nabbed a deal with TVT Records who put out the band’s debut record Pretty Hate Machine in 1989. Patrick would join Nine Inch Nails make a brief appearance on the record on the track Sanctified and toured with the band staying with the group until 1993. Despite being part of a multiplatinum band, Patrick was dirt poor making $400 a month as a hired hand. It was at this point he had come up with a 4 song demo and left the band and soon signed his own recording contract with Atlantic owned Reprise Records taking Nine Inch Nails programmer Brian Leisgang with him. In 1995 Filter would release their debut album Short Bus that would go platinum thanks to the single Hey Man Nice Shot. Four years would go by until the band released their follow up, 1999’s Title of Record. The long time between releases was attributed to a few factors.Brian Leisgang left the group around 1997 after creative differences with PatrickDrummer Matt Walker left and joined the smashing pumpkins to replace fired drummer Jimmy ChamberlinRichard Patrick had spent a good deal of time building his own studio. By Patrick’s own admission he wanted to always be in a band and not just have a group of hired hands. He would tell Spin ‘the only person talking to me was my girlfriend. I got so unbelievably depressed.” His first true love according to the magazine soon broke up with him. It would result in the track i’m not the only one. Touring members ,s guitarist Geno Lenardo, bassist Frank Cavanagh would take a bigger role in songwriting for the band’s second album named- Title of Record. With Title of Record Filter didn’t want to repeat the sound of the band’s first album with frontman richard patrick telling billboard We had to goals in mind - make something for the fans and make something we are proud of. Something that shows our growth. Short-bus was a tall punk rock black record but it’s very early 20’s and juvenile sounding. ‘Title’ takes people to a new place with a ton of hills and valleys. The album would feature of course more electronic music, bombastic, acoustic and 70’s era sounding songs. The lyrics on the group’s second album also took on a more serious tone with Patrick telling billboard “i think i took lyrics more seriously this time around as well. A lot of them are based on everyday things that happened in my life like breaking up with a girlfriend, getting angry or feeling like i’ve lost control of my life.I am the mouthpiece of this band and I’m always trying to answer the questions I have about life.Title of Record would be another success thanks to the single Take a Picture which became Filter’s biggest hit to date peaking at number 12 on the billboard hot 100 charts. The album also produced another hit in welcome to the fold resulting in the album going platinum. Lenardo would tell billboard about the band’ s change in sound on the second album saying ‘everybody was expecting another hey man nice shot and we went in the complete opposite direction…some people probably felt alienated and they shouldn’t a good song is a good song. It doesn’t matter if we play it harder or softer or use distortion or not.

In 1987 Bon Jovi was on tour for their third record, 1986’s Slippery When Wet. The album came out in August of 86 and nearly a year later in September, the band was booked to play seven consecutive nights at the budoken in japan from September 24 to the 30th. The arena held between 15-20K people. Slippery When Wet was a record that catapulted the band into the stratosphere going diamond in the states, selling over 12 million copies. Just for comparison, the band’s previous album sold a million copies During their tour, the bon jovi happened to be staying at the same hotel as , the king of pop Michael Jackson. Jackson was in town to play a three nights at a nearby stadium to over 135,000 fans. Jackson’s party occupied the top floor, while Bon Jovi were staying one floor below. Bon Jovi had just finished up a tour of Australia where they had to don disguises to get away from screaming fans and the press. Unbeknownst to them at the time, Jackson had to deal with the same issues dating back to his Jackson 5 days. Bon Jovi’s members would receive a call from Jackson’s manager during the day of September 24th asking if the band wanted to meet the king of pop, which they gladly accepted. Jon Bon Jovi would recall upon entering Jackson’s suite “The room had been ripped to shreds and redecorated,” “They put up mirrors against the wall so [Jackson] could practice his dancing, and a wooden dance floor in there. And they took over a wing of this hotel. Needless to say, spending money was not really an issue.”Upon entering Jackson’s suite, the king of pop wasn’t there, so the band opted to sit and wait for him to show up. Jackson would finally enter all decked out in his bad tour wardrobe. Jon would recall “When he entered the room, your eyes sort of had to focus again,” ”.The members made some small talk with Jackson who they tried to convince to come party with them, but he opted to stay in his suite, rest his voice and practice his dancing for the upcoming show. That’s how focused michael jackson was. It’s been insinuated by loudersond that at some point during the conversation the musicians talked abou playing live with each other and jackson supposedly was supposed to join bon jovi on stage at their final song of their last budokan date on September 30th Jackson had no show that day so the timing seemed perfect. So the day of Bon Jovi’s final show came on the 30th and an hour before show time Bon Jovi’s camp got word that Jackson would not be joining the group on stage. Now this is where there’s two version of events.. There’s two versions of this story that have been told. One is based on the book Michael Jackson, Inc: The Rise, Fall and Rebirth of a Billion-Dollar Empire from June 2014).As the band headed down to continue their party at a nearby venue, they were surprised when Jackson’s chimpanzee bubbles showed up in a limo and reportedly even danced at the party and shared a drink with the members of the band. Bubbles would be born in 1983 in Texas at an animal research festival that bred primates to do testing on them. It’s not exactly clear how Jackson got the chimpanzee but it’s speculated he paid for him when he was eight months old. Bon jovi would remember what happened next stating “We proceeded to get very drunk, have a bunch of water fights, knock on doors, typical classic rock star things to do in the eighties,” “And [we] blamed it all on Bubbles.”Then there’s a slightly different story. This one is based on the 2003 book Star Man: The Right Hand Man of Rock 'n' Roll. The book was written by Bon Jovi's then head of security and rock writer paul elliott. . Upon learning that jackson wouldn’t be making the september 30th concert the members were a little annoyed, so they concocted a plan to get back at Jackson. It was so successful, that if you are Canadian or lived in Canada and listened to music between 1996 and 2009 you probably took part in this cultural phenomenon.It was so popular there’s even a book written about it, and it’s cultural significance in Canada. Today, let’s talk about the rise and fall of Big Shiny Tunes. Rather than having mtv when we were kids in Canada, we had our own version, much music. Much is still around, but it’s a sad shell of it’s former self much like mtv. Starting in 1996 Much Music would compile the year’s biggest rock hits into a compilation album that would be released right before Christmas as the perfect stocking stuffer. It was called big shiny tunes.. It was usually labeled in the press as being an album of alternative hits, but I think that’s a mischaracterization, it was really the year’s most popular rock songs - spanning multiple genres from whatever was poplar at the time, nu-metal, pop rock, punk, emo, post-hardcore and so forthI first heard of Big Shiny tunes when I was in grade 6 that was the year big shiny tunes 2 came out. I grew up in small town Alberta for most of my life and in the lead up to pretty much every christmas my friends always talked about wanting the latest edition of Big Shiny Tunes. This is the commercial for the very first big shiny tunes from 1996. What made Big Shiny Tunes culturally Canadian was that it would have your usual hits from American and British artists, but it also featured Canadian artists, some established and some who weren’t. To a lot of Canadians it made it seem like their own artists were on the same playing field as the likes of Radiohead, Marilyn Manson, Bush and No Doubt. Author Mark Teo would publish a book in 2018 titled Shine: How a MuchMusic Compilation Came to Define Canadian Alternative Music and Sell a Zillion Copies. He would write, "for the hundreds of thousands of people who owned the album, it was a snapshot of us." The origin of big shiny tunes has several beginnings Vice had on take, while CBC had it’s own while several other newspapers had their slightly different versions. So let me summarize it for you. According to CBC the idea for big shiny tunes came from a yearly Canadian compilation album called Dance Mix that debuted in 1990. A label called Quality Recordings put out Dance Mix and they were an entertainment company that put out music on behalf of american labels in canada. It was in 1997 Quality teamed up with Much Music to release a similar annual dance compilation record called Muchdance that ran for many years.Just as a sidenote for my canadian subs, you might remember you could hire much music to come do a muchdance party at your work function or school. Anyways, getting back to the story, Quality Recordings according to CBC approached Much Music in the mid 90’s to do a similar spin off for alternative rock music since the dance mix albums were such a commercial hit. So that’s where the idea of partnering with the big labels came up. Another story is that EMI Canada approached MuchMusic to do a compilation album based on the NOW compilations that were a big hit in the UK. Vice’s retelling of big shiny tunes had a slightly different series of events, which dated back to 1993, three years before the first iteration of the series came out. It start with a lawyer named Chris Harrs who worked for Universal Music Canada. By 1993 compilation albums were nothing new to record labels. They dated back to the 70’s and perhaps no company was better known for putting out these types of albums than K-Tel who put out genre specific compilations. Most people know them for one song - ‘In the meantime’. The song was prominently featured in the trailer and soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and the video games guitar hero 5 and rock band 3 as on disc tracks. Spacehog would tour with some of the biggest rock bands on the planet including Oasis, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, and Red Hot Chili Peppers in addition to releasing four studio albums. Despite all being from the UK, the members with the exception of the brothers never met there and didn’t have as much success back home, instead becoming bigger in America. It resulted in some in their home country of writing them off as an American band.. But like i’ve asked so many times on my channel. What happened to Spacehog?The history of Spacehog begins with the Langdon brothers Antony and Royston. Antony is older. Both of them were raised in Leeds, in the UK. The brothers came from a musical family performing in church choir and playing in bands together. Their early musalical influences would include the beatles, David bowie, queen and, led zeppelin. Royston always had dreams of living a glamorous life something he chalked up to his mother who frequently bought vogue magazine. He’d see images of well dressed models getting out of expensive cars and they seemed more like the types of people favored cocktails over beer at the local pub. Couple this with growing up in the 70’s and Royston revelled in the atmosphere of gender bending and dressing androngynosluy , even admitting to sometimes wearing his mother’s makeup. He apparently even showed up on an 80’s tv show that was like a battle of the band’s format for his group the Raspberries. Antony meanwhile was a restless spirit, soon leaving Leeds and he found himself living in Switzerland, Hong Kong and London before he followed his girlfriend to New York City by the early 90’s. That girlfriend would later dump him in 1994. Royston feeling bad for his brother opted to pay him a visit in new york to cheer him up. Royston at the time was playing in a band who was on the verge of getting a record label deal with a company called Rhythm King, but he wasn’t happy in the band and also hated the british music press. He would tell The Toronto Star “I was dreading all the small minded, students with angst-and acne kind of writing about us…You can be one of the NME darling bands and then six months later they’re slagging you off and printing funny pictures of you.” A few days prior to Royston arriving in New York Antony met drummer Johnny Cragg at an espresso bar, where the drummer worked as a barista and a rat killer. Cragg at the time was living with a friend sleeping on his floor and only came to America after being bored in England wanting to leave behind his partying and drug lifestyle. He’d also admit he also across the ocean in search of rock n’ roll, something he couldn’t find back home. The drummer was offered a job to clean a basement of an espresso bar, only to later learn it was rat infested. It turned out the espresso bar shared a basement with a pharmacy and the rats were nesting in old boxes of medicine, but it made his job easier as the rats were high on downers. While working at the espresso bar in march of 1994, Cragg overheard someone talking in a leeds accent and that person happened to be Antony.. The two struck up a conversation and started jamming together and Royston showed up not long after. The seeds of Spacehog would be born. Royston would front the group and play bass, while his brother played guitar. Royston’s initialy plans were to just visit his brother for a a week or so but his plans changed. Royston had already written a number of songs for his old band and was enthralled by new york city so the timing felt perfect telling songfactsI think New York's a great place for people that are curious. She believed that she was actually friends with Motley Crue Bassist Nikii Sixx and engaged to Poison frontman Brett Michaels. The story starated with the rockstars allegedly reaching out to her on instagram and Tina would admit to Dr. Phil that she did initially question whether it was real or not. She would admit that the imposters sent her the drivers licenses of both nikki sixx and brett michaels. Tina would reveal to Dr. Phil her daughter and herself did a reverse image search online to see if the photos on the licenses had been used in scams before and they hadn’t so for her, it legitimized that she was talking to the real rockstars. Her friend, Vivian however, thought there were some mistakes on the drivers licenses but Tina didn’t agree. On top of that Vivian found it strange that none of the so called rockstars sent her flowers, flew her out, let alone even talked to her on the phone or video chatted. Things would escalate to where Tina was texting back and forth pretty regularly people she thought were sixx and michaels, despite the fact she never met them in person or talked to them on video chat. Tina had claimed she texted with nikki sixx everyday for six months. As to why she didn’t talk on video chat or meet either rockstars in person she would tell Dr. Phil that both rockstars were heavily controlled by their management and that their phone cameras weren’t working. There were a few odd times where she claimed to have video chatted for a few seconds, but the quality was pretty bad. Things got even more bizarre, when Tina would tell Dr. Phil, that soon enough Sixx and Michaels were fighting over her. Here’s some snippets of her appearing on dr. phil’s show. The story took an even crazier turn when Tina admitted she was talking to up to 3 people pretending to be brett michaels. She would still insist one of them was the real brett michaels but none of this seemed like a red flag that she was being duped. As you can probably imagine, she was a victim of catfishing.. For those who aren’t familiar with the term it’s when people impersonate someone online usually celebrities to get people to send them money or their own personal information. Tina would admit to sending money to both brett michaels and nikki sixx.Tina would appear on Dr. Phil’s show with one of her friends who knew she was being scammed the whole time, but of course she never listened to her friend.. Dr. Phil would poke holes in Tina’s so called relationship with the rockstars with the real Nikki Sixx and brett michaels also appearing on the show. Nikki Sixx would appear via video chat with his wife telling Dr. Phil and Tina."The first time I heard about this was when we talked about it. We wanted to come on together and let you know that whoever you're talking to is not me, and I'm sorry that this is happening to you. Watching the show and how Dr. Phil is trying to break it all down for you, it's heartbreaking for us. It's not fun, it's cruel and you seem like a very nice person. The internet's a tricky place. You have people pretending to be people all the time, and it's really sad when fans get sucked in.".With the pandemic going on during this time Sixx promised to invite Tina to a meet and greet when Motley Crue’s planned stadium tour with Poison and Def Leppard was planned to resume. Poison frontman Brett Michaels wouldn’t appear live on the show, instead pre-taping a segment warning Tina about imposters. Michaels would tell Dr. Phil and Tina . “These imposters who are going after innocent people like Tina, who is on your show right now, and other people, they will not stop during this pandemic, People are vulnerable. I feel like people right now are isolated … and that is the perfect time for these scumbags, scammers, con artists and imposters to come after innocent people.” It wasn’t the first time michaels had to speak out against people impersonating him saying in a statement released a few weeks earlier "To all my family, friends and fans, I just wanted to say please be aware of the epidemic going on during this pandemic," he said in the clip. One of my favourite topics I’ve done on my channel has been the MTV contests the network used to run in the 80’s and 90’s. I’ve done a number of stories on mtv contests you guys can check out. This particular request was for the band Cinderella’s contest they did with MTV to promote their second album 1989’s Long Cold Winter. I had a promo for the contest, but i couldn’t find any info on who the winner was and what happened afterwards, well I finally have that info so let’s get to it. Cinderella would emerge on the scene in the mid 80’s and hail from the east coast scene that saw bands play philly and New Jersey. Led by guitarist and frontman Tom Keifer, the band would be made up of bassist Eric Brittingham, guitarist Jeff Labar and drummer Fred Coury.The band would release their debut record Night Songs in 1986. The album was a huge success selling 3 million copies and according to the LA Times it was the biggest debut record for a band since Boston’s debut record came out ten years prior in 1976. As Cinderella turned their attention to their second record, there was a lot of pressure to repeat the same success. Tom Keifer for his part hadn’t really traveled much outside of Jersey and Philly, but being part of a successful touring rock act playing all over the world changed that. It was his experience on the road that influenced his songwriting. The resulting album would be 1989’s Long Cold Winter which was another big success selling 3 million copies. Back when people used to buy albums, it was common for bands and labels to team up with mtv to run contests and cinderella did just that with their second release. Titled the ‘escpae the long cold winter contest with cinderella’ the band would give one winner the chance to see them in concert and take a vacation with the band in hawaii. Here’s the promo mtv ran for the contest. As part of the contest the band also teamed up with headbangers ball to show a lot of the behind the scenes of what happenes on tour. They’d show the tour bus, some rehearsals and just hang out backstage. So let’s get to the winner and contest details. Well, the contest saw 50,000 entries with the winner being a 22 year old woman named Denise Cook who was from Merced, California Cook sent one post card to MTV and won a 4 night, 3 day vacation to hawaii. She would be interviewed by the merced sun star “i couldn’t believe it. I love the band. I’m in love with the drummer.’ She would add in the same interview she was a hardcore MTV fan watching the network 2-3 hours a day. Since she was allowed one guest, She would take her 20 year old sister Sherri to hawaii with her.
