Leitz Photographica Auction Highlights Preview Event at Leica Store & Gallery Los Angeles Leica Camera USA 2022-04-18 | Renowned auction house "Leitz Photographica Auction" celebrates its 20th anniversary, holding the world's largest auction of historic cameras for the 40th time. Among the unique collectibles and extraordinary examples of camera history up for auction on June 11, 2022 at the Leitz Park – the international Leica headquarters in Wetzlar – an exceptional highlight stands out: the Leica 0-Series No. 105 produced in 1923. The 0-Series, a batch of prototypes, holds a special appeal for collectors of historically significant technical artifacts. Before the Leitz Camera – Leica for short – went into series production in the mid-1920s and made the 35mm format the new standard for professional photographers, approximately 20 examples of the 0-Series were manufactured. Around a dozen of them are estimated to still be in existence today. The 0-Series No. 105 is not only exceptional because of its rarity, it was also one of the personal cameras of Oskar Barnack, the inventor of 35mm photography, whose name adorns the viewfinder of the camera. Barnack used the 105 to capture motifs from his family life, gaining technical insights he then applied to the further development of the camera and its succeeding models.

Now with Firmware 2.0, the Leica SL2-S has many new improvements in overall functionality and performance for both stills and video. What does it mean to be positioned as a standard bearer or gatekeeper of sorts, when it comes to the creation of imagery that will ultimately be used to sell to and be relatable to diverse audiences? What is the view from the intersection where deep experience, sweat equity, and professional growth meet the demands of cultural commerce and the institutions that still hold sway in determining which photographers get which assignments?Alston examines how he chooses to represent himself, a person of color, within the context of commercial photography and advertising. The emerging black aesthetic is grounded in dynamic and debatable notions of black authenticity and cultural relevance. He will present images that span a 25 year career that has visually contributed to the black narrative in Hollywood. Portraits and editorial work from Hollywood glossy magazines to key art for movie posters, and rare behind-the-scenes images of day to day Black Hollywood. Giving both his work and his time, he traveled to Ethiopia to document a “shoe drop” by TOMS Shoes, which donates footwear to children in need worldwide. Kwaku’s world travels continue to inform his work and remind him that curiosity, encouragement and sincerity are universal languages. As the Director of Photography on a documentary titled In Search of Voodoo, he has made multiple trips to West Africa, and is inspired to bridge still photography and film-making to tell great stories.

A committed black and white photographer, Lopez will discuss his projects and recent experience working with the Leica Q2 Monochrom. Hosted by the Tom A. Smith - Director of the Leica Akademie USA. Joseph Michael Lopez (b. 1973) is a photographer born in New York City to a Puerto Rican father and a mother who escaped the Cuban revolution in 1967. He began his career as an analog cinematographer on the critically acclaimed Bruce Weber film, Chop Suey (2001), and was an autodidact until 2009, when he approached Columbia University without an undergraduate degree and was accepted as a MFA candidate, completed in 2011. Currently, Joseph divides his time between long-form projects, teaching, and commercial work. His photographs have appeared on the covers of M, The Magazine for Leica M Photography, Leica Fotografie International, The Sunday Review of The New York Times, New York magazine and The New Yorker, among others.Joseph’s photographs were recently on exhibit in Cuban Photography after 1980: Selections from the Museum’s Collection, at The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. In 2016, a commissioned series of his photographs of New York neighborhoods, New York at Its Core: Future City Lab, was permanently installed at The Museum of the City of New York.
