Lawyer: The Critical Role/Daggerheart license IS a scandal... that can be avoided. The Rules Lawyer 2025-07-04 | I bring up concerning issues in the current Darrington Press Community Gaming License (DPGCL), and react to Bob World Builder's video saying that some of us are overreacting to it. Main takeaways:-No this is not worse than the OGL scandal; however, the license is currently objectively worse than what Hasbro currently publishes D&D under. -I share Dungeons and Discourse's main point: we want a competitor to D&D to succeed and for any TTRPG having a thriving a 3PP community is vital to that. That's the purpose of these critiques.-I make specific comparisons between Darrington Press' GCL and other companies' licenses post-OGL crisis, which do not have similar problematic provisions. -The argument that one should wait to call this a scandal only until after people are screwed, after people have already agreed-to a contract that weakens their position, is not wise. It is a scandal that, particularly after the OGL crisis, this is the only TTRPG company that puts these threats down on paper, which can only be explained by their wanting the right to do these things. -Yes, I have seen the Roll for Combat stream where they say that people are overreacting to the license. I respond to it at 9:13, and welcome people to see RFC's stream. -I learn during this stream that DP has said they have heard the community's concerns and suggested there will be changes when they release a Homebrewing Kit for Daggerheart. I'm happy they are, and hopefully this video helps ensure they make changes addressing community concerns. I did this stream/video because I was worried that the video I respond to would make DP (and other TTRPG companies) not feel like they have to. As I say in this video, one scenario is that this contract was drafted by a lawyer not familiar with the TTRPG hobby (and that DP's leadership "left it to the lawyers"). (EDIT: A commenter says there's no way as Critical Role NOT had counsel they've worked with over the past several years. So this is cause to be more wary that this might be a deliberate decision than I initially thought.)-DP may have valid reasons to not go with the licenses I cite that other TTRPG companies are following. But if that is true, they should explain what they are.ERRATA:-Section 11.3 appears to allow work that you took "substantial steps" to create to be under the previous version of the License. First, that is a higher bar than "in development" from the Draw Steel license. A PATHFINDER 2e CRPG!? I interview the makers of Dragons Demand (on Kickstarter) & Dawnsbury Days! The Rules Lawyer 2024-10-07 | I interview the creators of two CRPGs based on Pathfinder 2e rules, DAWNSBURY DAYS and DRAGON'S DEMAND! Support the Dragon's Demand Kickstarter which ends Oct. 24! My takeaways:-They aspire to Baldur's Gate 3 breadth of dialogue possibilities and Solasta-like grid-based combat (enhanced by PF2e rules)-They have experience and seem to have applied forethought into what they can do within their means. (Very important!) EDIT: I'd rather they be realistic. PF:KM got about 2x by this point in its Kickstarter while promising much more. But they also severely underpredicted the cost of what they envisioned and had to release the game unfinished to fund the rest of development.-I appreciate their fidelity to PF2e rules by sticking to a 3D grid.-They're adapting the original module to the medium of a CRPG: they promise a compelling "main character" narrative and want to flesh out the town and surroundings so you can freely explore them. (Their Neverwinter Nights work had BG1 and BG2-like open-world exploration.)-Dragon's Demand doesn't happen if it doesn't reach its funding goal. I also want the $610K archetypes stretch goal. A successful PF2e CRPG drives interest in the game itself. Pathfinders take on toothless D&D mechanics: dying, poison, diseases, skills The Rules Lawyer 2024-09-03 | It's a widespread criticism that D&D suffers from "pop up healing," where knockouts in a fight don't matter. Poison, diseases, and curses also aren't very impactful, and skills like Medicine don't find much use.
