Biarritz, Côte d’Argent il y a une siècle / a century ago StephendelRoser 2021-12-20 | Bathing belles, the beaches and the casino show a lighter side to early tourism than in the more cultural Pathé Baby films. It is clear, however, that holidays such as the ones filmed here were very much deluxe, and enjoyed only by "cosmopolitan society". Filmed in 1917. A different aspect of early twentieth-century leisure from that in Pathé's Britanny films is covered here: gone are the burly guides and boatmen, and in come cosmopolitan society who even appear to enjoy rowing themselves. The contrast with the picture of a more staid form tourist life in the Morgat, Tarn Canyons and Venice Canals films is very marked. This film is, in fact, less about tourism and more about hedonism. The beach scenes feature bathing beauties, who commence to cavort in a fairly seemly, but nonetheless exhibitionistic, way. Next to the beach in importance is the casino -- though we are not allowed to see inside -- and after that, the luxury hotels. Lip-service is paid to the "picturesque", and the film ends with the obligatory sunset, but the film marks the introduction of seaside fun into moderately high society.Filmed by Mlle. G. Jousset, a pathfinder as a female director, this copy is in colour from a tinting process in which dyes are applied to the film through a series of hand-made masks.

The animals are left to wander on large areas of rough grassland interspersed with salt lagoons, and are cared for by cowboys known as gardiens, who also tame the horses and ride them, which is the subject of this little film. Presented here as a documentary, the footage is in fact taken from a feature film, Notre Dame d’Amour, dating from 1923. / Le surface de la Carmargue est occupé par des ranches de bétail et de chevaux, qui vagabondent librement sur des terrains sablonneux entre les étangs salins. Dickenss London / Le Londres de Charles Dickens (1924) StephendelRoser 2020-11-14 | A whole sub-series of the Wonderful London series of short films from 1924 covers the scenes in London of episodes from Charles Dickens’s life and novels, covering aspects of Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Bleak House amongst others. The scenes come to life in a creaky way as actors take the parts of Dickens’s characters and the author himself in a strange mixture of documentary and fantasy, but well worth watching for the footage of the settings as they were nearly a hundred years nearer to the author’s times. Put your tongue gently into your cheek and enjoy!Une sub-série de Londres le magnifique (1924), cette compilation d’ultra-courts métrages dépeint les sites et les personnages londiniens de quelques-uns des romans de Charles Dickens – Oliver Twist, David Copperfield et Bleak House – et des rues de Londres où Dickens habitait quand il les écrivait. Des scènes sont rendus (silencieusement !) par des acteurs des années vingt, et la série termine avec des scènes de faintaisie où les personnages passent un jour au Londres moderne de 1924. Le métrage de Londres vaut quand même le temps d’être vue car il montre le Londres d’une époque cent ans plus proche de celle de Dickens que la nôtre, et dépeignent un peu l’atmosphère du Londres dickensien.
Wonderful London (1924) StephendelRoser 2020-11-11 | Parts of a series of cinema "shorts'' made in 1924 stirring up tourist interest and national pride in London - a reminder that however old-fashioned it looks to us now, the London of those days was to its inhabitants both ultra-modern and historic, just as we see it today. These versions were cut down from the originals, which lasted ten minutes each, and issued for the Pathé Baby home movie projector in 1933, which accounts for the way some of the films seem to start in the middle of an idea. They show us aspects of London two years or so before the General Strike, yet seem to describe a country which is moving forward in the world, and where nothing much is wrong. The only unease is the spectre of the First World War, which briefly hangs over one of the films. They also remind us that in reality, history does not fall into easily defined slices: this is clearly the age of the car, but horses and carriages still feature on the roads.

Capri (1921) StephendelRoser 2020-08-16 | The Isle of Capri before mass tourism, before motor launches, millionaires' yachts and cruise liners: the director sees it and its inhabitants as "picturesque", and the places shown are truly beautiful, but the word seems to patronise the island's people, who seem to be tough and hard-working. Djibouti (1920) StephendelRoser 2020-08-03 | Djibouti, French Somali Coast, filmed in in 1920. The European quarter is spacious and the colonialists wear white clothes, while in the "native" quarter there is only one source of water for everyone to use. Nonetheless the Pathé cameraman has found the life of the Somali majority interesting enough to devote most of the film to it. / Les rues du quartier européen sont larges, les colonialistes portent des vêtements en blanc, et les "indigènes" n'ont qu'une source d'eau. Le caméraman a néanmoins trouvé la vie des Somalis assez intéressante pour y consacrer la majorité de ce petit film datant de 1923.
Alsace (1921) StephendelRoser 2020-07-29 | Sous son titre d'origine, "Au Pays de Maître Hansi", ce film célèbra les traditions alsaciennes, et peut être reconnu aussi comme célébration du retour de l'Alsace à la France à la fin de la Grande Guerre. Ã l'époque Maître Hansi était artiste alsacien, et il apparaît brièvement avec un de ses tableaux dans le film. / Under its original title "In the Land of Maître Hansi" this film celebrated Alsatian traditions, and can also be seen as a celebration of the return of Alsace to France at the end of the First World War. At the time Hansi was an Alsatian artist and he appears briefly in the film with one of his pictures.

Condensed Milk / Le Lait condensé (1909) StephendelRoser 2020-06-12 | How condensed milk was produced at Stalden in Switzerland by a company founded by one of the Ritz family for supplying tinned milk to their hotels! The firm was later taken over by Nestlé and then much later became the site where they invented UHT milk. The film would have been good publicity then, but now is interesting for the way it shows the to us strange mix of mechanised production and manual tasks which characterised industry at the start of the last century. / Comment on produisait le lait condense à Stalden (Suisse) chez La Société laitière des Alpes Bernoises fondé par la famille Ritz pour la provision de lait en boîtes pour leurs hotels! L’entreprise fut reprise plus tard par Nestlé, et puis, beaucoup plus tard, fut le site de l’invention du lait UHT. Le film doit avoir apporté de la bonne publicité à l’époque, mais aujourd’hui il montre la combinaison caractéristique de mécanisation et de tâches manuelles des industries au commencement du 20e siècle.

Antique Athens / Athènes Antique(1913) StephendelRoser 2020-06-06 | This film illuminates the difference in experience between the select few who could witness the world's sights in the past and the managed, processed experience of the many who can afford to visit them now. Children climb and play on the monuments and old locals sun themselves on the ancient stones. There are no crowds of tourists led by guides with flags and microphones. But of course both types of experience are totally alien to those expected over twenty centuries ago by the original builders. / Ce film illustre la différence entre l’expérience des touristes riches et privilégiés du commencement du 20e siècle et celle des touristes en masse qui visitent Athènes aujourd’hui. La Culture du Caoutchouc / The Cultivation of Rubber (1911) StephendelRoser 2020-05-27 | Un petit aperçu d'une plantation de caoutchouc en Malaisie en 1911, où on voit des ouvriers immigrés indiens, le directeur européen (probablement britannique) vêtu un blanc, et les méthodes primitives d'exploitation. Les britanniques avaient saisi le pouvoir en Malaisie, et avaient annexé beaucoup de la territoire pour des plantations appartenant à des entreprises européens, mais le pays connaissait un boom à cause de la demande globale pour le caoutchouc. Britain had seized power in Malaya, and appropriated land for plantations from the Malays, preventing from having any role in the rubber industry, but the country was experiencing a boom because of worldwide demand for rubber. Pathé emphasise the economic power represented by this port while the visuals show a "modern" industrial environment for the time, with steam giving way to electric power. As in many other early Pathé industrial films, there is a delight in the epic scale of the machinery and structures. / L'importation du charbon et des phosphates, l'exportation du vin : ce film Pathé-Baby met l'accent sur le pouvoir économique que représentait ce port, pendant que les images montrent un environnement qui était « moderne » à l'époque, où l'énergie électrique commençait à remplacer le vapeur. Wonderful London / Londres le Magnifique (1924) StephendelRoser 2020-04-10 | Parts of a series of cinema "shorts'' made in 1924 stirring up tourist interest and national pride in London - a reminder that however old-fashioned it looks to us now, the London of those days was to its inhabitants both ultra-modern and historic, just as we see it today. These versions were cut down from the originals, which lasted ten minutes each, and issued for the Pathé Baby home movie projector in 1933, which accounts for the way some of the films seem to start in the middle of an idea. They show us aspects of London two years or so before the General Strike, yet seem to describe a country which is moving forward in the world, and where nothing much is wrong. The only unease is the spectre of the First World War, which briefly hangs over one of the films. They also remind us that in reality, history does not fall into easily defined slices: this is clearly the age of the car, but horses and carriages still feature on the roads.Quatre films d'une série de vingt courts-métrages qui ont été tournés en 1924 pour stimuler l'intérêt touristique et la fierté nationale des britanniques en Londres, qui nous rappelle le fait que si les images du Londres d'antan nous semblent avoir un air simplement d'antiquité, aux personnes de 1924 ils semblait une mélange du moderne et de l'historique, comme le Londres d'aujourd'hui nous semble. Ces versions étaient des extraits des films d'origine, qui duraient chacun approximativement dix minutes ; elles ont été éditées pour les projecteurs de film 9.5mm « Pathé-Baby » en 1933. Ceci est la raison pour laquelle quelques-uns des films semblent commencement au milieu d'un sujet. Les films nous montrent des aspects de Londres deux ans approximativement avant la Grève Générale, mais essayent à décrire un pays qui fait du progrès dans le monde, un pays où il n'y a pas de grands problèmes. La seule source d'inquiétude semble le spectre de la Grande Guerre, qui apparaît pour un moment dans un des films. Ils nous rappellent aussi qu'en réalité l'histoire ne consiste pas en tranches bien définies : par exemple on est évidemment à l'époque de l'auto, mais des coches à chevaux sont encore présentes sur les rues.
