Summary of the Case:
On June 30, 2025, Kelsey Fitzsimmons, a 29-year-old North Andover, Massachusetts police officer, became the center of a dramatic “cop-on-cop” incident at her own home.
Officers arrived to serve her a restraining order filed by her then-fiancé. During the tense encounter, Fitzsimmons retrieved her handgun. She later claimed she had pointed the weapon at herself in the midst of a mental health crisis and suicide attempt. However, according to the officer confronting her, Patrick Noonan, said she pointed the gun directly at him, pulled the trigger (which didn’t fire because a round wasn’t chambered), and began racking the slide to load another round. Claiming that he was in fear for his life, Noonan fired, striking Fitzsimmons in the chest.
She suffered serious injuries, including a collapsed lung, spent weeks in the hospital, and underwent numerous surgeries. Fitzsimmons was subsequently charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, a felony.
In March 2026, after a bench trial before a judge, she was found not guilty. The judge ruled there was reasonable doubt based on the conflicting accounts. The case drew significant public attention because of its intensity, the mental health elements involved, and its timing amid broader scrutiny of law enforcement in Massachusetts.
