It was built to help load large quantities of coal onto ships, coal wagons from Durham pits would be pushed into position along four rails on top of the Staithes ready for unloading.It was the last working Staithes on the River Tyne, closing in 1980 when the coal industry fell into decline. In the early 20th century there was around 30 wooden jetties along the Tyne, This is now the only existing jetty left.Sadly, the Staithes have suffered damage from multiple fires in the last 20 years.The first in 2003 resulted in the large 50m gap that you can see near the end of the structure. At the hight of the fire there were nearly 70 firefighters trying to put out the flames,however, 20% of the Staithes were destroyed in the arson attack. There were further arson attacks in 2010, 2019 and more recently In 2020.

Thankfully, it was on the grass and absolutely no damage. I would like to thank a very kind walker who rescued my drone and left it on the fence. You see her pick it up on the video. When I eventually located it, the gulls were extremely aggressive.So yes, my flying friends be very wary of those feathery devil's 😬I took the avata2 out looking for the grounded M3P and that's how I located it.
