Messy MinimalistYou heard me right, we cancelled minimalism in our house. (Not forever). But minimalism is no longer what it used to be - and that has been weighing me down for quite some time. No, this is not the END of minimalism - but I'm hoping that we can find the truth in minimalism again.
I've wanted to say something for a while, but didn't know how to approach the subject. After all, when I first started decluttering there weren't all that many people talking about it. No one knew about Marie Kondo or what Spark Joy meant. And the ones who were early adopters really seemed to have a passion for helping you declutter your life and live with less. Today, I can't go online for more than five minutes without hearing someone talk about minimalism (this new "aesthetic minimalism") and their picture-perfect "Minimalist space" - which would be fine, except that these spaces were curated for the sole purpose of a photograph.
Minimalism today seems to be a charade. The game is decluttering (junking) everything and buying a bunch of new stuff to curate your space.
I believe the true cost of minimalism should be low, but it's not anymore. It should put money in YOUR pocket, and not be a burden to attain. Replacing all one's items with new stuff for a perfect photo is just senseless...and I grew tired of seeing it done over and over. New spaces being stamped out, hashtagged, and repeated.
So we cancelled the term minimalism in our house (for a year or so). We focused on our family and building a life worth living in these crazy times. We carried with us the ideas of living with less. Of finding meaning in the journey, and enjoying the simple things life has to offer. I will do my best to preserve the idea of minimalism that got me started down this path, and I hope others will follow suit - in their own time.
There is still so much minimalism has to offer, if we don't lose sight of it.

#messyminimalist #minimalism #simplelivingHow We Homeschool the SIMPLE way | Kindergarten+ | The Messy MinimalistMessy Minimalist2021-10-07 | This homeschool video is coming a year late, (literally - I filmed it last year!!) but I wanted to share how we approached homeschooling for beginners. If you’re a parent during the pandemic, there’s a good chance you’ve had to ask yourself, “Should I homeschool my kids during COVID?” Or perhaps you’re wondering, Is it hard to homeschool? CAN I homeschool my kids? And even then, HOW do you homeschool? Maybe you’ve tried ‘virtual learning’ and your child just isn’t connecting with the lessons. …You’re wondering if there’s another choice.
These are all questions Dan and I had been asking ourselves for months leading up to the school year, and we finally decided to face our fears and take the leap. With so much uncertainty in the world, we chose to homeschool.
Granted, our daughter is in Kindergarten, so homeschool for us might look a little different than, say, homeschool for an 8th grader. But none-the-less, this is a decision that takes some real soul-searching and commitment before making. Because let’s be real, homeschooling is really on the parent to follow through with!
Maybe you’ve been doing virtual learning for a few months, or maybe your child is in in-person school and you’re thinking of alternatives - if so, I hope this video will help you understand my minimalist homeschool approach and how we made it simple, easy and fun!
****UPDATE NOTE: This video is coming a year late - literally! We chose to enroll our daughter into public schools in the Fall of 2021, so our homeschool journey only lasted a year. But I'm SO glad we did it and I learned a TON about how to make our child's education fun and SAFE during the pandemic.
#MinimalistHomeschool #Homeschool #HomeschoolForBeginnersReThinking NORMAL - Simple Life During the Pandemic | Minimalism & Simple LivingMessy Minimalist2020-08-29 | As a semi-extroverted minimalist and proclaimed “simpleist” (is that even a word?!), I found that I was experiencing some extreme pandemic fatigue while quarantining during Covid-19. The world has been so out of our control, I needed to step away. To rethink normal. So I logged off social media for 50+ days and focused on the things we CAN control. Now I’m back, and here’s a little update just to touch base before I get back into my typical minimalism & simple living videos.
Thank you for your continued love and support while I was away.
I love you all! Rachel, The Messy Minimalist

*********💰 Things I NO LONGER BUY as a Minimalist | Minimalism & Simple LivingMessy Minimalist2020-03-22 | As a minimalist myself, I believe one of the key differences between minimalists and non-minimalists is the amount of items you bring into your home on a daily, monthly, or yearly basis. It's almost a right of passage to go from the buying and decluttering cycle, to just NOT buying new things. (Proving, there CAN be an end to the decluttering process). Woo!
For a while, I resisted making a video of things I no longer buy as a minimalist, but since it was requested by many of you – here we go!
Here’s my “Things I DO NOT buy anymore now that I’m a minimalist” video. :-D Enjoy! And as usual – if you have any questions, please toss them in the comments!

This time, I'm taking a 'clean with me' or a 'declutter with me' approach with the hope of giving you some decluttering motivation! After years on this minimalism journey, decluttering my garage has been my biggest decluttering goal. I've rage purged, donated, recycled, and tossed my way through this process. I know I'm not a textbook minimalist yet ;-), but the process I've used to declutter my stuff has changed me. Formally a hoarder, or maximalist as I prefer (call it what you will!), I'm now able to let go of the excess as I seek to make a space more suited for simple living. Intentional living. SLOW living. This is my minimalist life - as imperfect as it is. And I'm happy I can share all this entails.
So after many requests to get back into the garage, I'm inviting you to declutter with me, and see if we can't transform this space from a maximalist garage into a minimalist garage! ;-)

#declutterwithme #minimalismchallenge #minimalismReal Life Minimalist House Tour | Family Minimalism + Simple Living | Messy Minimalist VideoMessy Minimalist2019-11-17 | Welcome to our minimalist family house tour! After working on my minimalism series for a few years, I'm finally ready to show a progress update. This is kid-friendly minimalism. This is family minimalism. This is colorful minimalism. This is MY version of minimalism, because our journey isn't over! :)
You'll notice my house isn't updated. It oozes with mismatched 1990s finishes and a general tired feeling. BUT, becoming a minimalist to me has been a journey toward simple living, having less, and decluttering the mess until our anxiety fades.
It’s not perfect, but it’s progress. We've come so far, and we'll continue to push minimalism and simple living even further.

There’s a few different approaches people take with decluttering. The Kon Mari Method says you should do categories, one at a time, while the Messy Minimalist method would have you running from room to room, rage purging whichever area causes you the most stress. I’ll be the first to say this probably isn’t the MOST effective way to go, but it’s pretty gratifying none-the-less. There’s also the Mins-challenge approach, where you let go of more and more items each day, growing with the number of days you’ve been in the challenge.
Today, I’ll be working closer to the KonMari Method, attacking three very specific types of items: Pens, paper, and pocket findings.
Pens and paper are pretty self explanatory (wanna try guessing how many pens I have??). "Pocket findings" in our house usually consist of a few things: Misc hardware, loose change, and trash. It’s funny, because at some point in the last 15 years, pockets in women’s clothing seemed to vanish (much to my dismay!). That being said, as a female, their absence has really cut down on the amount of misplaced stuff over the years! It was like carrying around little dumpsters all day! Even still, we have a lot of little piles to take care of. Tidying up things will make a huge difference in just a couple hours! Enjoy!

You can see it plain and clear in my intro, which is almost enough for me to scrap these videos altogether because of the shame. But this is just how we are, and while we try to get better on this minimalism journey, I'm always discovering new things that allow us to focus more on LIFE, and less on STUFF.
One of those things is our television, which we happily ditched 6 months ago after not having cable TV for 7 years! No more TV for us. :)

My minimalism journey continues, as I've been clutterblind to a set of shelves in my garage - and I finally realized that I don't even need them!
As I've said before, minimalism (for me) has been a slow process of identifying spaces in need of decluttering, cleaning, sorting, and general downsizing. Now it's time we take it a step further. :)

I'm back from my 'maternity leave' and ready to tell my birth story! With only a 4 and a half hour labor, I had a very fast labor and delivery! You could almost call it a minimalist birth... haha! But seriously, I had a lot of requests for this video, so I thought a great way to get back into the swing of things was to tell my unmedicated birth story, in all of it's glorious details!

MUSIC: Music: http://www.purple-planet.comApril Decluttering Challenge - Mini Packing Party | Messy MinimalistMessy Minimalist2018-05-13 | It's the Messy Minimalist APRIL (MAY)?? Decluttering Challenge! This month's challenge is to have a mini packing party. A packing party is a concept I borrowed from The Minimalists, which is a podcast and blog I follow (and highly recommend!).
A TRUE packing party is when you pack the entire contents of your home, then ONLY unpack what you need. But like I always do, I’m switching it up a bit and having a mini packing party, where I’ll pack up a few boxes of stuff that I’ve been struggling to get rid of. The idea here is to then label the boxes and over the next 4 months I’ll only unpack what I need. After that…. it’s off to the donation center! Are you with me?! :)
********* In case you don't want to watch the video through a second time, here's the April Messy Minimalist Decluttering Challenge breakdown:
1. Search your entire house for anything that you don’t really want, but can’t seem to get rid of. 2. Pack those items into a cardboard box (something that you don’t mind donating in the future). 3. Label EVERYTHING you pack on the outside of the box. 4. Pick a duration (for me it’s 4 months), and write that on the box. 5. Over the next few months, only unpack what you need. When your time is up, DON’T open the box. Donate it!

MUSIC: Music: http://www.purple-planet.comMarch Decluttering Challenge - Paper Clutter | Messy MinimalistMessy Minimalist2018-03-24 | It's the Messy Minimalist March Paper Decluttering Challenge! The first 100 people to sign up will get 2 months of Skillshare for just .99 cents!: http://skl.sh/messyminimalist
This month's challenge is my most requested video yet: Paper Clutter! Paper clutter decluttering is something I’ve been putting off because it’s not only a tough thing to declutter, but it’s also tough to document on video! But with Tax day right around the corner, I thought it was the perfect time to tackle our paper clutter mess. Even if you’ve already done your taxes, you may be wondering what to do with all your receipts and extra paper work. I decided that this is the year I’m going to start digitally filing everything.
The app I’m using to digitally file is called iScanner. (I’m using the paid version). You may find one you like better, but be sure to use one that allows you to send to google drive or email to yourself easily. This monthly decluttering challenge should take you anywhere from 4 to 10 hours, depending on how much paper you have!
********* In case you don't want to watch the video through a second time, here's the March Messy Minimalist Decluttering Challenge breakdown:
1. Search your entire house for ALL paper clutter! (car and purse too!) 2. Put all papers into ONE spot. 3. Start sorting into categories. (Bills, Car, Health, Pets, etc…) 4. Go through each category one by one using your scanning app 5. Toss or shred what you’ve scanned. Keep anything that needs attention in a pile. 6. Send all scans to google drive or upload to your computer. You’re done!
TIP: Don’t get caught up with looking through sentimental paper clutter… we’ll do that in another challenge!

Unlike the January Messy Minimalist Monthly Challenge where we decluttered our bathroom, linen, and clothes closets - this month we're decluttering our kitchen in an effort to minimize cupboard and pantry clutter. I use more of a KonMari Method approach this time around, which seems to help! Good luck and happy decluttering!
********* In case you don't want to watch the video through a second time, here's the February Messy Minimalist Decluttering Challenge breakdown:
1. Totally empty Your Cupboards (All of them!) 2. Determine how many of each item you need 3. Remove "fantasy self" items (donate bin!) 4. Put your "keep pile" back in cupboards 5. Examine pantry for expired foods 6. Smile with your new decluttered kitchen!

So sit back and enjoy 7 minutes of my voice lulling you to sleep... kidding. But seriously, there is 7 minutes of talking in this video because I was in that kind of mood! But if you stick it out, you're in for some solid SPEED decluttering and cleaning as I prep to get this room cleared out!

So for this Messy Minimalist Bonus Video, I'm just showing you the kind of thing I do, but don't always film! Like making the realization that I've been decluttering and cleaning my kitchen counter over and over for YEARS without actually trying to fix the problem. (AKA, put the stuff in a place it really belongs).

This is a great time to finally declutter and get rid of the stuff you've been WANTING to get rid of, but you just didn't have the motivation or means to do so. For this video, I'll give the three ways I unload my stuff after decluttering, and the motivation behind each one:
Method 1: Sell it for a premium (Via an app like 5Miles) Motivation: Make some money!
Method 2: Sell it or post free on Craigslist Motivation: Quick n' easy!
Method 3: Donate it! :-D Motivation: Good karma, helping others in need.
That's it. Short and sweet today. I hope you're all feeling motivated to get out there and sell/purge/donate your unneeded stuff. I'm off to do more decluttering!

But since the holidays are around the corner, I've been thinking a lot about what I DON'T want for Christmas this year. We've embraced minimalism more than ever this year, and I the last thing we want is to fill our house up with more stuff. So I've put together this list of Minimalist Gift Ideas based mostly on what I want for Christmas.. haha :) I hope you enjoy!

CREDITS:: Music: http://www.purple-planet.comDecluttering Mystery Closet | Holiday Prep With Messy MinimalistMessy Minimalist2017-11-30 | Today in my minimalism journey, I'm decluttering unusable spaces! Back when I identified more with a hoarder than an minimalist, I didn't know how to get organized. So the space under the stairs became a hoarders delight. Basically a junk room - and I'm decluttering it today!
Sometimes, my minimalism journey is made a LOT easier when it aligns with everyday events... such as the holidays. The space I'm decluttering today contains most of our holiday and christmas decorations, which is great motivation to get in there and declutter, get more minimal, and continue this minimalism journey!

Deliberate Thought by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/?keywords=deliberate+thought Artist: http://incompetech.comDeath Cleaning | Surviving a hoarder - 5 Things I learnedMessy Minimalist2017-11-03 | Swedish Death Cleaning, or dostadning, is the topic of today's video. It comes from the Swedish words for ‘death’ and ‘cleaning’ and was made mainstream after the release of the book “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning” by Margareta Magnusson.
While everyone else is talking about what it's like to Death Clean, I was thinking about the other side of it. The side of the survivor. For me, my loved one DID NOT death clean, declutter, or practice minimalism whatsoever. I can't help but to wonder how things might have been differently if she had...
The idea of Swedish Death Cleaning is for elder folks to begin decluttering, minimizing, and cleaning, prior to death – often starting in their mid 60s (or just after retirement). The thought is that this cleaning will relieve their loved ones of the burden that would otherwise fall onto them.
But I have to wonder, why wait until retirement? There have been numerous comparisons made between Marie Kondo’s ageless “spark joy” theory of decluttering, (also known as KonMari), and Mangusson’s later-in-life Death Cleaning. That’s because at their core, the methods seek a similar goal: Feeling better with less clutter. But it’s the reason for seeking this goal that differs.

What's a "fantasy self"? It's the person you imagine yourself to be, so you collect STUFF to justify the fantasy you've created for yourself! I identified a few aspects of "Fantasy Rachel" that I'm ready to declutter and let go... in the messy minimalist way. ;-)

MUSIC: Music: http://www.purple-planet.comDecision Fatigue | Biggest Decluttering RoadblockMessy Minimalist2017-09-02 | This week on my minimalism journey, I talk about decision fatigue and it's ugly sister, decision paralysis. After decluttering and purging for months, my brain is tired of making decisions and decluttering decision fatigue has set in!
So my minimalism mission this week has been to just power through the decision fatigue (and decision paralysis) and just keep purging items. The garage declutter has taken longer than I wanted, but here I am... back in the pit! Wish me luck... ;-)

MUSIC: Music: http://www.purple-planet.com and The Urban Symphonia (Youtube library)Why Im GIVING everything away | Messy Minimalist Q&AMessy Minimalist2017-08-19 | It's Messy Minimalist Q&A time! I get asked all the time, "Why are you giving everything away?". (Why not sell?) So in a very NOT minimalist way, I'm giving my long-form answer to this question. ;-) But if you don't feel like listening to the video, I'll try to be more succinct here: This video is all about TIME. I'm giving my things away because I don't want to waste any more time on my STUFF. Stuff has been taking up my time and money for too long, now I'm done with it. I will declutter, purge, and minimize until my minimalist journey is done. Seriously. Money doesn't bring happiness! Living minimal and mindful does. :)

How do you declutter or konmari your diet? You only eat what brings your body joy - and if you have a gluten allergy or gluten sensitivity, then eating things with gluten DOES NOT bring your body joy. Trust me. I've been eating "gluten free" for over 2 years and it's the best decision I've made for my health. Today I'm going to talk about how I discovered I had issues with gluten, and what I eat without sacrificing flavor or my pocketbook!
I'll also do a little unboxing of my favorite online grocery store. Yumm. :)
