We need to pivot our systems in order to meet demand and reduce global hunger (all while bringing down carbon emissions). This is where our tech solutions come in. We’ve designed our Growth Towers to optimise everything from energy usage to resource input, resulting in a growing machine poised to take its place as part of a production network capable of feeding an ever-growing global population.

This boils down to three key aspects:
⚡ Speed – our tech solutions can grow seedlings to the same spec as outdoor growing within 90 days (compared to 18 months)
📈 Scale – enjoy an environment free from pest and disease, allowing for increased survival rates (our system has a survival rate of approximately 95% for tested seedlings)
♻️ Sustainability – we use a closed-loop system, ensuring minimal water wastage and making the most of every drop of natural resource

The colder months make for an ideal time to plant tree seedlings and aid reforestation efforts. In recent years, though, the impact of flash floods and unprecedented weather has made this challenging (alongside an increase in pests and disease which ravage planting projects). That’s where vertical farming can help: growing high-quality, resilient tree seedlings quickly and reliably.
We've worked closely with national bodies to grow conifer seedlings such as Norway and Sitka spruce, Douglas fir and Scots pine, as well as broadleaf varieties such as oak, alder and birch.
Vertical farming’s beauty lies in its ability to address big-picture challenges with targeted solutions, arming planters with all the tools they need to succeed.

Traditional farming only works at scale.
And in the UK, that involves lots of capital costs at the beginning, and operating costs for labour and machines.
Watch how scalability in vertical farming automation and IGS’ growth towers can complement traditional farming and your business by helping you scale operations and create high-quality produce without adding to your workforce.
There are many other so-called vertical Farms that are essentially converted shipping containers that are quite labor intensive are actually quite difficult to control the environment within something the size of a shipping container and quite frankly do not scale.
Traditional farming only works at scale and in the UK that involves lots of capital course at the beginning opening course for labor and machines the level of automation that we bring not only enables industrial scale growing but it also means that the farmer can grow at industrial scale without having to have an industrial scale workforce.
We can complement the traditional farming model in many ways we can grow starter crops that can field earlier we can Harden crops to make sure that you have something that's much more robust and we can help you in many ways create a much more repeatable and reliable product at the end of the day.
One of the benefits of controlled environment agriculture is that you can create whatever environment it is that you want and that allows you to diversify the portfolio of the crops you're growing because you can say I want that Tower to be like a Amazon rainforest and you set the conditions and it will mimic that.
If we are going to begin to make an impact in terms of the volume of healthy nutritious product that is delivered into the food chain then we need industrial scale which means farmers are going to need tens hundreds or even thousands of these towers to make an impact on the food supply chain for a nation the size of the UK.
By coming together in a hybrid way with existing Farmers whether they're in broadacre fields or whether they are in greenhouses polytunnels or under glass we will be able to work in that hybrid way and bring new technologies to bear on existing businesses.
Climate change is resulting in a shortage of food in some areas throughout the UK, and the seasons we’re used to and confident in producing food in, are changing.
We need to grow more food in the next 30 years than we have in the previous 10,000 that agriculture has existed, and UK growers are directly facing the challenges of climate change.
Can the innovation of vertical farming help overcome the impacts of climate change?
Discover how the innovation of IGS Growth Towers can help meet the growing demand for consistent, sustainable crops in response to the impacts of climate change.
We need to find more innovative ways to feed our people and vertical farming plays a key part of that, not on its own, but with the other technologies that are being developed. An awful lot of effort has gone into the engineering, that enables us to innovate in terms of broadening the crop portfolio that our farmers can grow within an IGS Growth Tower, and perfecting what we call the growth recipes.

Can vertical farming help overcome the impacts of climate change?
Discover how IGS Growth Towers can help meet the growing demand for consistent, sustainable crops in response to the impacts of climate change.
Climate change affects agriculture and the global food supply because it's adding an element of chaos to everything that we do we're seeing quite a shortage of food in some areas and the seasons that we're used to and that we're confident in producing food in are changing.
Some people say we only have 60 harvests left on the planet which is an incredibly scary statistic when you think that if you combine this with the fact that the population is growing so much we need to grow more food in the next 30 Years than we have in the previous ten thousand that agriculture has existed.
UK growers are directly experiencing the challenges that we will face with climate change this year next year and for decades ahead.
72 percent of farmers are worried about growing the crops in the methods that they have today.
Farmers are having to react more dynamically to changing weather and seasons and situations which are just less predictable than they were before it leads to uncertainty in prices is the the demand can go up and if the supply can't match it and go up as well you're going to get big increases in price or lack of availability in UK.
Our Behavior as consumers is largely driven by the weather but what that means is the off takers can change their requirements for what they want to buy from the farmers same day so what vertical farming can do is help adjust very last minute and put the control back in the hands of the farmers.
More than ever what we need just now is innovation and reliability within what we're doing. Vertical farming can enable countries to become less dependent on Imports or pay a higher price for crops when they're in short supply.
It provides Farmers with a Precision controlled environment capable of being deployed both in rural and urban settings.
Vertical Farms can drastically cut down the time needed to transport food from the farm to the retail store and find the our plates.

Transcript:
I think that the long-term future of vertical farming is as a key component in a global agricultural ecosystem
Our systems are conceived by a farmer and designed by an engineer so it's designed both with the farming background and the engineering knowledge to be able to develop these crops in a way that's not only technologically advanced but also really practical from the point of view of what a farmer needs out of our system
Controlled environment Agriculture and glass houses and indoor systems managing cultivation is reactive and can yield inconsistent results
Total controlled environment agriculture enables predictable and consistent cultivation in any suitable location especially places where an open field or Glasshouse production would not be practical or viable
IGS has an Innovative solution for tcea imagine you have a field you chop it up into snooker table sized pieces you stack them on top of each other and you put them inside a warehouse inside which you have complete control over all the environmental variables
So what we enable them to do is to regain control of their growing environment such that they can decide what to grow based upon the economics of does it make sense for me to grow this now therefore the ability to grow a variety of different crops at different points in the year where the farmer can command a premium for that crop is really one of the key differentiators of what an IGS growth Tower can deliver to our customers
IGS's cloud-based systems allow us to monitor systems remotely Gathering huge amounts of data which allows us to improve our performance over time
We can give the crop a perfect summer's day every single day of the year which means that as you accumulate good summer days over a period of say six months we can collapse that down to something like two months by making it perfect every day that is Total Control
Learn more about our vertical farming system by visiting intelligentgrowthsolutions.comControl indoor climates with IGS vertical farming systemIntelligent Growth Solutions2022-03-16 | Our specialism at IGS is in enabling Total Controlled Environment Agriculture (TCEA) - a very precise and fully automated approach to indoor growing.
Our vertical farming system determines optimal recipes of weather - lighting, watering and ventilation - as well as delivering the nutrition the crops need. Data is collected continuously and monitored through a web-based app.
The system is IoT-enabled to automate system control and management. The degree of control is so precise that each 6sqm tray can form its own microclimate, allowing growers to produce a variety of different crops within a single tower.

Following our first successful propagation trials which took place in February 2019, we are delighted to have grown a small crop of strawberries in our vertical farm.
Fundamental barriers of cost of power and labour have inhibited the sector’s expansion to date, as well as the inability to produce consistent and quality produce at scale.
The IGS technology has been designed to overcome these barriers and significantly lower the cost of production overall.
