On March 7th, ESA’s Science Programme Committee has confirmed its continued operations to 2026 and an indicative extension to 2029, contingent upon ongoing commitments from national contributors and partners. Five of the planets are in a harmonic rhythm despite very different compositions – a novelty. We talked to two involved scientists from the University of Bern and the University of Geneva about their findings.
Harmony in the TOI-178 system NCCR PlanetS 2021-01-25 | This animation shows a representation of the orbits and movements of the planets in the TOI-178 system. New research by Adrien Leleu and his colleagues with several telescopes, including ESO’s Very Large Telescope, has revealed that the system boasts six exoplanets and that all but the one closest to the star are locked in a rare rhythm as they move in their orbits (represented in orange). In other words, they are in resonance. This means that there are patterns that repeat themselves rhythmically as the planets go around the star, with some planets aligning every few orbits.In this artist’s animation, the rhythmic movement of the planets around the central star is represented through a musical harmony, created by attributing a note (in the pentatonic scale) to each of the planets in the resonance chain. Close Encounter NCCR PlanetS 2019-05-24 | Two stars in a cluster undergoing a close encounter. They each begin with their own Kuiper belt of planetesimals, which are color coded (blue and green) depending upon which star they start around. The green planetesimals begin around a rather low mass star, the blue planetesimals begin life around its higher mass sibling. When the two stars meet, the green Kuiper belt is heavily disrupted by the heavier star. This causes a bunch of them to be ejected (you can see them at 35 seconds in the bottom right), flying away to become things like Oumuamua.
