Here's my latest product shout out, and review for the new Ahead Armor Hybrid Snare Drum Case featuring Ahead’s Revolutionary PDX CORE. Now on to the review. :-)I am really digging this case for it's extra bit of protection for local gigging y'all. Ahead’s PDX CORE is based on their Traditional DX Core Design consisting of 2 layers of high-impact foam, Ahead Armor’s Signature water resistant 600 Denier Polyester Exterior, and of course Ahead’s trademark “oh sooo wooly” Sherpa fleece lining. The difference with a PDX CORE snare case, is that Ahead puts a .2” thick Inner Hard Core of PVC between the layers of high impact foam. This adds the stiffness of a hard case. And I’ll be honest this is a pretty stiff case, that when zipped up feels pretty stout. I actually feel very confident with one of my nicer, and or heavier snares being safe in this case while being carried around town, being stuffed in an airplane’s OH compartment, or being packed super tight in my SUV. Another cool thing about the PDX Core design is it goes hand in hand with Ahead’s Classic TruForm Engineering, and teardrop design which corresponds to the true shape of the drum plus its mounting hardware. Together these elements create the perfect safe space FOR your strainer. This case was designed in conjunction with an Ahead Artist who gigs regularly on Broadway in Nashville, TN, and who wanted an Ahead case with an extra level of protection for the heaviest of his snares without the clunkiness of ill fitting hard cases. At the end of the @deadandcompany 2023 tour I was gifted a set of @underarmour HOVR Infil Tactical Waterproof Boots, and they have been #crushingit during my post shoulder surgery return to tech work. So I’m shouting them out to my fellow roadies who rock a load in boot, then a day boot like me. No affiliate link. I just love em. So much so that I got a pair of the non-waterproof model for hot summer tours, and a 2nd pair of the WP model for when the 1st pair wear out 🤣. Now you might think “What’s a boot got to do with being a drum tech?” But touring techs spend A LOT of time on their feet, hence having good shoes/boots is super important. These UA HOVR model boots are the only boots I’ve found in which I can walk without insoles, much less run since my hip surgery in 2008, and a broken ankle in 2018. By the end of the first night of my first gig in 5 months post surgery my legs may have been toast, but my feet, ankles, and , hips, were ready to keep rocking as this HOVR sole gives support unlike any shoe I’ve ever worn. The thick padding around the upper gave me maximum ankle support, and the Vibram Saftey sole had such a great grip that I literally felt like spider man. Rogers Dyna-Sonic To Super Ten Conversion W Highlights of a Resonant Snare Head & Wires Installation Kenny Sharretts 2024-02-28 | Howdy All. Here's a multifaceted product demo video allowing you to hear the difference between a Rogers Dyna-Sonic, and a Rogers Super Ten snare drum. So many people have asked me if the Super Ten Shell the same as the Dyna-Sonic Shell. The answer is yes so I converted one of my Dyna-Sonic Snares into a Super Ten using SoundHoops 2.3 MM hoops. That way when I go to play some gigs soon, I have top, and bottom snare mics from SoundHoops ready to rock with no stands needed. You can hear what differences in hoop thickness, snare strainer setup, AND different mics (Earthworks DM20 vs Soundhoops SH 101) can do for your snare sound. BACK TO BACK BASS DRUM BEATER SHOOTOUT AT HIGH VOLTAGE STUDIOS Kenny Sharretts 2023-09-08 | Howdy Everyone. I was doing a drum tuning session for a recording session at High Voltage Studios in Dripping Springs, TX when the discussion was had about the "Bass Drum Sound" for the first track. I had tuned the bass drum to fit the feel/sound the drummer wanted, and we were all set with a mic combo of a Shure Beta 91 (inside) with a CAD D88 (Outside). Hence the main way i could sculpt the bass drum tone was via the choice of bass drum beater. So i figured this was a great opp to shoot a quick back to back beater comparison for my viewers since we were doing the same thing audiowise for the song. That way y'all may hear a beater you want to add to your collection. Its aluminum shaft lightens the load making it a speedy beater, but it smacks like a hefty beater. Being able to quickly swap sides between plastic, and felt during a gig makes this a very useful beater to have. - The AHEAD Square Felt Cube (w/ Rubber side) Beatersweetwater.sjv.io/g1qzqXThis beater had a bit of a heavy feel that took a moment to adjust to, but considering the incredibly huge punch of this beater I found it worth it. The felt side has a deep warm punch that’s adds a hugeness to the felt tone. A warm round tone with a softer attack that is still punchy, and full bodied. Absolutely LOVED the feel of this beater as it felt very balanced, and was easy to plant the beater. - The AHEAD Mach Wave BeaterFor years this was my go to beater for all my cover band/wedding gigs. Massive attack coupled with thick boom. I thought of it as my personal “trigger kick” since the cut out design added huge bottom end to the tone. When I used this beater on my 16” Breakbeats Kick the sound engineer’s would always ask “You got a trigger on that kick?” knowing full well they had no trigger kick line from me. I love this beater. - The Dragonfly Percussion XL Flannel Beater This is the PERFECT soft beater. Balanced feel, soft but articulate atttack, but a bigger sound due to its size. TOUR TECH HOW TO TUNE A SURDO DRUM ON DEAD AND CO 2023 Kenny Sharretts 2023-08-27 | Howdy All,So while out on tour with Dead & Co on "The Final Tour" 2023 I noticed an "errant ash" from "something" had burned a tiny hole in the head of the smallest surdo on the The Wall Of Drums. So I figured it was a great opportunity to use my GoPro HERO9 Black 5K Waterproof Action Camerasweetwater.sjv.io/q4mr9nto create an "on the road" tuning video showing you how to install, balance, and tune a head on this 20" Remo Surdo. Because it's a "claw style" tension hoop, it's much like a bass drum where you have to suspend the hoop on the drum head while installing it. Hence every idiosyncrasy of the drum, and hoop will have an effect on how the drum tensions up. So in this vid I show you how to install a Remo drum head (including cracking the excess glue seal) , and some fundamentals of balancing a drum head on an 8 lug drum. LOLOLOL! So here's a quick tip for using aDigital Drum Dial sweetwater.sjv.io/75OP6yfrom Big Bang Distribution to help maintain the balance of your drums from gig to gig while out on the road. In this case I use the Drum Dial every 3rd gig to double check the tension balance on Mickey's 3 big surdos. To learn how to re-head, and tune one of these Surdos, please stream the full lesson FOR FREE at kennysharretts.com/ppv-only-pageThese surdos travel attached to a drum rack that itself is secured to the riser decks via my custom ROCK RACK LOCKS from Solid Stage Customs out of Tulsa, OK. The drums are attached to the rack via three mounting points each on drum so they are very secure. The ROCK RACK LOCKS have a shock absorbing lining so the drums take very little abuse in the truck, BUT there is still some shaking. Add the thrashing Mick, Jay, and Otiel would put on these drums every show, and it made sense to tune from show to show, but double check tensions with pitches every 3rd show. So to be scientific, and efficient I brought in the Digital Drum Dial from Big Bang Distribution. ROCK RACK LOCKS BY Solid Stage Customs Review Kenny Sharretts 2023-08-08 | Been having a blast bustin' ass on the road with Mickey Hart, and Dead and Company for their "The Final Tour" 2023. In keeping with making this tour the biggest, and best ever, I co-created a new tool for securing your Drum Racks, and Stage pieces to their stage decking in order to be transported as they stand. No disassembly required. These custom designed pieces were co-designed, refined, and machined by Solid Stage Customs out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. They have a unique shock absorbing rubber lining that allows the rack lock /deck to take all the vibrations/shock from the road allowing the rack to ride safely, and torque free. They worked perfectly for this whole tour, and made packing the "Wall of Drums" a breeze as I simply stripped the delicate pieces, left the bigger drums on the rack (properly mounted mind you), and rolled these decks straight into the truck. This co-creation was extra special as Mark Meeker from SSC watches my YT channel, and has booked private tuning lessons with me so it was awesome that this clamp basically came from a YT connection. C'mooooon!!! The team at SSC paid great attention to detail, and nailed the fit of these clamps remotely from OK while we were building the rack in San Francisco. Just finished up some tour prep for Dead & Company In the process I remembered that I’m often asked “What’s in my workbox” by techs, and drummers so I figured I take a quick vid of the “essentials” pack I usually toss into my checked bag just to make sure I always cover the basics. The only thing I missed was the LP wrench. In no particular order we have1. Under Armour Yard model gloves. Thin enough to work the wing nuts, etc on the kit, but thick enough to protect my hands. Essential!!2. Evans Drumheads keys for large tension rods, and Tama Drums keys for small head tension rods. As well as 2 L Rod drum keys for the tight spots. 3. The Drummers Grip from Big Bang Distribution . This lightweight wing nut tool has been a true hand saver on the Wall of Drums that I tech for Mickey Hart4. My Dr.Friedels multi tool with the universal nut driver. This is hands DOWN one of the most well built/useful multi-tools I’ve ever owned. 5. The 17 in 1 tool from MusicNomad Equipment Care and the Ahead Drumsticks & Accessories drum tool . Both are compact multi-tools that cover most of the gear on which I tech. 6. The Saker-Tool multi star. Fits rt into my Dr Freidels pouch for easy access to a variety of tools. 7. A Latin Percussion 2 sided wrench. If you’ve ever been a drum tech you know this is essential. 8. A Sharpie because! It’s Rock and Roll!!! 9. BW DRUMS LED LOGO LIGHT SHOUT OUT Kenny Sharretts 2023-02-16 | Howdy Y'all. Here's a shout out video of thanks to a student of my online drum, and drum tuning lessons Brad Waldron for making this AWESOME LED drum logo light for me. Crafted using an acrylic snare shell, Brad created a drum that is also a a multifaceted light using my YT/Bass Drum Logo. Brad had made one of these for his Drum/YouTube studio so he decided to make one for me as a gift. IT'S AWESOME y'all. Not only does it have my logo on it, not only does it add a bit off to the vibe of my YT studio, but it's built using a set of LED lights that are controlled by the Govee app so you can program the light to be any color, any level of brightness, or program it to have a cool lighting sequence to make it pop. Now this is a side project for him, as he doesn't always have the time to build them, but if he digs the design, and has the time he can build one for your drum room, YT studio, or drums shop. Whats On My Bass Drum Pedal? Grip Peddler Shout Out Kenny Sharretts 2023-01-08 | Howdy All. Over the years many viewers have asked me "What is that DW thing on your bass drum pedal?" It's a product I discovered on my 1st tour as a tech working for Kenny Aronoff, and a product I thought was no longer being made. Hence, I never gave it a shout out as why shout out a product that you can't get. Well I WAS WRONG! So to make up for my unawareness on the matter please say hello to the awesome Grip Peddler. The Grip Peddler is a rubber pedal mat that increases your foots grip on the bass drum pedal, allowing you to really dig in to the pedal. Even with feet that are wet, and sticky from a barroom floor. In addition I found that it adds a bit of cushioning for your foot, which is a Godsend for drummers who play 4 hour sets, multiple nights in a row. They have smooth surface models like the one I use. They have models with raised bumps/nodes that allow even MORE grip on your pedal, as well as the "Bump" Model which has a raised rubber ridge that acts as a toe stop so you can use it as leverage for special single bass drum techniques that rely on "bouncing" or "feathering" the pedal. ROCK LOCKS FROM BIG BANG DISTRIBUTION Kenny Sharretts 2023-01-02 | Happy New Year Everyone!Here's a quick shout out for a product that performed amazingly well while shooting my video on "How To Set Up And Tune A 6.5" x 14" Rogers Super Ten Brass Snare Drum To 4 Tunings" (Coming Soon). That product is Rock Locks from Big Bang Distribution. These locks performed phenomenally well during the shoot as the tensions never backed out at ANY tension level (even super low tunings). It's unique 12 star design allows you to put these locks on at almost any angle/position that your tension rod head is at. These locks also have a rounded edge so you won't clip your knuckles if you brush them with your hand whilst drumming. It's important to note that these Rock Locks come in 2 sizes. 49's for smaller headed tension rods (Tama for example), and 53's for standard size tension rods heads (like my Rogers Drums). I've always been a fan of using classic lug locs coupled with Tight Screws to make sure my snares and higher toms do not go out of tune while I play them so I'm ABSOLUTELY STOKED to have another great option in my tech tool kit to help myself or my drummers keep their drums in tune all night long. What an incredible sounding, & easy to tune set of drums. The hardware, & build on this kit is absolutely meticulous. The new Ultra-Matic Low Mass Tom mount (which works with old Rogers mounts) allowed this tom to sustain forever. No choking. The two tone Gold/Silver sparkle Lacquer Finish is absolutely eye-popping, & the interior stain makes these drums as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside. What really blew me away about these drums was the sound. Deep, thick, rich, and powerful due to the 5 ply shells (w/ 2ply rerings), & the unique laminating process they used to make a classic design take on a more modern sound. Hence you get all the tone, power, & heft of the classic PowerTone Kits of the late 60's/early 70's, but with a bit more of a modern punch. Even with this big sound, they are still amazing for Jazz drumming as well as Rock, Country, Blues, & R & B music. What brought the sound to life for me was being able to easily tune through 3 great intervals for the toms to create 3 unique sounds that still had the incredible tone of these drums at the forefront. Especially as I went with a bit higher tunings on these toms to increase the attack/presence of the toms. Although I will say by using my fave 2 ply tom head on the market, Evans' UV2, I had more than enough body, & attack to go around. Although I tune the kick, & snare in other videos, I will say both drums are simply incredible. The 20" has the body, and depth of tone that you get in a 22" Bass Drum, but with the attack, & punch of a 20" bass drum. Absolutely SICK KICK. The snare drum sounds equally as amazing over a broad range of tunings making it an almost obligatory addition if you are thinking about getting this kit. POWER TONE KIT UNBOXING FINAL Kenny Sharretts 2022-10-25 | Howdy all! Here's a quick UNBOXING video of the new Rogers Power Tone kit in the 12", 14", 12" x 20" configuration. I was setting up for my video shoot for a product review/demo/tuning vid for this awesome new Rogers Power Tone Model. So I figured I'd share the unboxing part with my viewers as I know many of y'all like unboxing vids, AND I've never really done one. So here it is y'all. Chock full of box opening goodness, and ASMR sounds allowing you to share with me the experience of unboxing this beautiful drum kit. Just FYI These drums sounded amazing during the session, as did my Powertone snare which always rocks. I was blown away by the powerful, but rich tone of the drums, the heft of this little 12" x 20" Kick, the quality of the build, the absolutely beautiful finish (yes it's a lacquer finish), and the fact that even though the tom was on a "old school" bass drum tom mount the tom sang for days!!! Everything my Rogers Covington Kit is, but with the heftier/more modern tone of a thicker shell/different laminating process, and a bass drum tom mount. I absolutely LOVE this kit.
