Irish whale conservation: science & action University of Galway 2025-07-10 | This short film focuses on the impacts of human activities and climate change on whales and dolphins in Ireland. In 2024 a rare and unusual sighting of a humpback whale in the Shannon Estuary caused a considerable stir in the Irish marine science community and made national news headlines. With the help of Jack O’Callaghan, Science Officer at the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, this film explores the science behind what is happening in the ocean that caused the whale to make its way into the Shannon. It also outlines what people can do to help create a safe haven for these animals as they continue to adapt to environmental change and human pressures. This film was created by Jane Hurley (interview, script and narration) and John Murray (filming and editing) at the School of Natural Sciences, University of Galway. Jane completed this project as part of the MSc in Environmental Leadership.
