Torin Liversedge - Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2025 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2025-04-17 | Torin Liversedge has been using his passion for photography to raise awareness and vital funds for mental health services, following the tragic loss of his brother, Corey, who took his own life in 2020, aged 16. Torin has poured his heart into his photography, capturing images of the local landscape to create calendars in aid of Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH), who provide mental health support and accessible, practical information. Torin has sold over 350 calendars - raising over £5,250, with production funded entirely by himself, every penny raised going to SAMH's North East Suicide Prevention work, to reduce stigma and increase capacity to support conversations around suicide.Each calendar shares their story on the back, in the hope that it can help prevent other families from experiencing a similar tragedy to theirs. Torin is already planning next year’s effort and hopes to continue to raise funds and to share his message of hope, to prevent others from suffering and to help save lives. Sasha Shevchenko - Rotary Young Citizen Peacemaker Award 2025 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2025-04-17 | Arriving in the UK from Ukraine in 2022, Sasha Shevchenko joined Hereford Sixth Form College in 2023, where she started running the Ukrainian Society, giving Ukrainian students an opportunity to support one another as they settled into life in the UK. Alongside this, Sasha has given talks to local church groups and events, arranged and facilitated support for fellow Ukrainians and has acted as translator and interpreter, always demonstrating trust and confidentiality. Her mature outlook and knowledge of Ukrainian history and the current conflict, led to an interview with Hereford and Worcester Radio and the opportunity to read her poem to the visiting Archbishop of Canterbury, at Hereford Cathedral, which was later set to music and performed at the 2024 Remembrance Day event by the college choir. Sasha is a wonderful ambassador for peace and an outstanding advocate for the local Ukrainian community. She has also provided valuable work experience opportunities for young people, contributing to a more equitable society. Jude Williams - Rotary Young Citizen Sporting Hero Award 2025 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2025-04-17 | Jude Williams is an extraordinary, resilient and determined young person whose achievements and contributions make him a positive role model in sport, education, community involvement and social impact.Jude has been a member of the Triathlon Ireland Squad since the age of 15, earning his first Irish cap competing at the ETU event in Holten, Holland, as the youngest participant, and has since gone on to represent Ireland at multiple European Cups. Jude also demonstrated outstanding citizenship through his charitable fundraising efforts. At just 14, he completed the 7.5km Hellespont swim from Europe to Asia, raising over £10,000 for the Sunshine Foundation, a charity supporting children with special needs in Romania. Jude’s commitment to helping others extends further through his inspiring TEDx talk, which shares a practical "GINGER" toolkit for building resilience and happiness among teenagers. Jude’s involvement in these projects highlights his ability to leverage his athletic journey to inspire and uplift others, embodying the spirit of good citizenship. He has used his personal experiences to show that sport can be a transformative force in life, instilling values of perseverance, discipline, and compassion. Charlie Warren - Rotary Young Citizen Environmentalist Award 2025 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2025-04-17 | Charlie attends Riverside Meadows Academy in St Neots, which is part of the Horizon Education Trust and provides services and support for children and young people with educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).He started his garden in the summer of 2022 and has created something truly special for the school to enjoy by turning some unused land on the side of the school into a garden, growing a wide range of fruits and vegetables which are then prepared in the kitchen and served to students in the canteen. He also propagates plants to sell, raising money for the academy. The garden provides a space for Charlie to participate in his hobby, it also provides an outdoor area of tranquillity and wellbeing for all. Inspired by his dedication and interest in his garden area, Charlie wants to pursue a land-based career and a spokesperson at Riverside Meadows Academy said they “could not be prouder for him and his achievements.”Charlie was nominated by Rotary St Neots St Mary's.---Young people from across the country have had their inspiring volunteering, fundraising and social impact recognised by Rotary in the annual Rotary Young Citizen Awards. Rosa Ross - Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2025 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2025-04-17 | In January 2024, Rosa Ross was diagnosed with stage four non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but that didn't stop her from continuing her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Despite the challenges, she adapted her approach to the volunteering section of the award by leading activities for the young patients on her ward, turning her hospital experience into an opportunity to help others. Rosa offered support to those who were worried about losing their hair, despite undergoing chemotherapy and experiencing hair loss herself. Rosa’s volunteering didn’t stop there, she went on to volunteer with Guides and Brownies, helped organise a school fundraiser during childhood cancer awareness month and helped with LoveOliver, Childhood Cancer Research and Practical Support for Families. Rosa’s hospital experience also gave her the confidence to speak up for herself and others by joining the Teenage Cancer Trust’s advisory group and a girl guides advisory board to talk about making guides inclusive and accessible to people in hospital or with long term health conditions. Daniel Jillings - Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2025 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2025-04-17 | Since 2018, Daniel Jillings has been actively campaigning for all students, both Deaf and hearing, to have equal opportunity to study British Sign language (BSL), as a GCSE in secondary education.With the support of his local MP, Peter Aldous, and his mum, Daniel started working with National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS), to raise awareness of the BSL GCSE campaign, which, through the lobbying of Parliament and the launch of a legal challenge made possible by a successful crowd funding campaign, gained huge momentum, resulting in the Department of Education taking the first steps in developing the new BSL GCSE course in 2019. Daniel’s tireless campaigning has resulted in extensive media coverage and production of an award-winning BBC documentary, recognising his instrumental efforts in achieving success in getting the BSL GCSE planning underway. Daniel continues to work with NDCS to campaign for more Deaf people to train to become Deaf BSL teachers and he also hopes to see BSL A-level introduced in due course. Krish Daryanani - Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2025 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2025-04-17 | Krish Daryanani is a highly motivated, young peoples’ champion for social action and equality. Krish has demonstrated his leadership skills through his work with the Merseyside Youth Commission and on the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Race Equality Panel, contributing to solutions for tackling the summer riots and working with them on the Aspire Discover Program - a gateway to careers in local government for BAME individuals. Krish advocates for enhanced support and care for individuals with disabilities. Since 2023, Krish has been a national campaigner for disabled students, nominated for the Disability Champion EQ+ Award 2024 and was awarded an Equality Excellence Award by the school of Histories, Languages and Cultures for his work in this. Krish is also a proven environmentalist and demonstrated leadership through his work with the North West Net Zero Youth Steering Group and as a young advisor on a Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) project, exploring the connection between nature and improving young people’s mental health. We heard from District Governor Oleksandr Khardin and members of the Rotary GB&I Ukraine Team, comprising Rotarians from both Ukraine and Great Britain and Ireland. Madison Wright - Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2024 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2024-04-23 | At just 10-years-old, Madison Wright began a fully committed campaign to raise money for the Northern Ireland Children's Hospice (NICH) when she learned that her best friend, Noah and his younger sister had been diagnosed with Leukodystrophy, a life-limiting disease.Within 4 years she had raised £17,000 for the hospice through a variety of different fundraisers, including a collaboration with the local football team, Carrick Rangers.As the years have passed, Madison’s dedication to supporting the Hospice has only grown stronger, most recently organising two gala balls at the prestigious Titanic Building in Belfast that collectively raised over £50,000. Rhys McCole - Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2024 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2024-04-23 | Rhys McCole has been fighting for his life ever since he was born, having been diagnosed with a hole in his heart, auditory processing disorder, dyslexia, autism and asthma as well as having to battle sepsis and a ruptured appendix. Despite all of this, he has worked his way to becoming a full-time boxing coach and fitness instructor as well as the only ‘para-disabled’ boxer in the world to compete in mainstream boxing.Rhys currently has his own boxing initiative, and he works in conjunction with local schools in his hometown of Inverclyde, Scotland, to encourage not just health and fitness but also messages of anti-weapons, anti-bullying, anti-substance abuse, anti-smoking/vaping.Local schools are absolutely delighted, having seen less violence and better attendances, and the physical and mental health benefits of Rhys’s programme are being spoken about widely around Inverclyde.---Young people from across the country have had their inspiring volunteering, fundraising and social impact recognised by Rotary in the annual Rotary Young Citizen Awards.Read and watch more from this year’s winners at: rotarygbi.org/rotary-young-citizen-awards-2024
Naimah Kadar - Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2024 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2024-04-23 | Since joining the Lindley Educational Trust through the Rank Aspire programme two years ago, Naimiah Kadar has been on amazing journey of growth and seized the opportunities to grow her outdoor educational skills.Through working closely with others in her local area through the Lindley Youth Club provision (Ashton Youth Club) in Ashton-under-Lyne, Naimiah has become a role model for other young women, especially young Muslim women, in her community.Naimah has shown her leadership skills during a whole range of adventures over the past couple of years, whether that was being a young leader on a Winter Skills adventure to the Cairngorms or taking a group of young people up Mount Toubkal in Morocco. Anthony Knight - Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2024 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2024-04-23 | Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Anthony Knight saw the suffering of the civilian population and wanted to do something practical to help. Anthony started playing his violin in local churches and care homes, asking for donations to the DEC Ukraine Appeal, and after 75 of those performances he raised nearly £14,000.However, Anthony was not content with this and wanted to use his talents to raise even more money for charity. Last Summer, he embarked on the first leg of a Grand Tour across Europe that is raising money for UNICEF.In total, he will visit twelve countries on the tour and recently had to increase his fundraising target to £20,000 after surpassing the £10,000 he originally set. Sophie Hebdon - Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2024 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2024-04-23 | Ever since finding hedgehogs in her school field in summer 2022, 10-year-old Sophie Hebdon has dedicated herself to hedgehog welfare! Sophie and her family researched hedgehog feeding stations and made a couple of them to pop on the school allotment, which was the start of nightly visits to fill the stations.Sophie now keeps an eye out for any hedgehogs who may need help and has helped rescue several hedgehogs, even helping to build a soft release area in her school to help rescued hedgehogs be released back out into the wild.Sophie has been lucky enough to help at both of her local hedgehog rescue centres, who have supported her on her hedgehog fostering journey. Maxine Bellwood of A Prickly Haven Hedgehog Hotel said: “She knows when one is in trouble, she gets them into rescue as quickly as possible. Eva Hambley - Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2024 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2024-04-23 | Eva Hambley, a young survivor of sexual assault, consistently uses her voice to fight for change on behalf of countless others who have experienced similar trauma. Recognising the limitations of current support systems, Eva uses various platforms to highlight the urgency of providing timely and comprehensive care for survivors, including immediate access to mental health services.She actively collaborates with organisations like Barnardo's and the PCC (Police & Crime Commissioners) to create educational videos based on her story and actively contributing to the PCC Youth Advocacy Group.Eva bravely gave a speech in parliament sharing her story and outlining the need for legislative changes to ensure victims receive the legal and emotional support they deserve. Ian Duncan - Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2024 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2024-04-23 | Despite Cerebral Palsy (CP) affecting in the main his mobility, co-ordination and balance, 12-year-old Ian Duncan has always been determined to not be held back and give everything a go.In 2019 Ian, whilst having a medical procedure, was introduced to Frame Running, a form of adaptive running which supports athletes’ bodies by a ‘trike’, allowing them to experience the sensation of free movement. In addition to helping support his Frame Running club grow, Ian took part in a study at Queen Margaret University looking into the health and wellbeing benefits of frame running.Ian recently took the decision to leave the club to help create and set up a club in Edinburgh so more boys and girls could have access to the frames. Layan Hassan - Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2024 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2024-04-23 | Layan Hassan, an elected Youth MP, champions the cause and diversity within schools and looks to address systemic inequality. Layan recently attended the annual House Of Commons sitting to discuss universal free school meals and gave a speech entitled "The standardisation of food", having been selected to share her thoughts by the House Of Commons Deputy Speaker.Following her debut in the House of Commons, local newspapers highlighted Layan's impactful campaign and parliamentary involvement. Furthermore, Layan joined the National Youth Agency (NYA) as a Young Assessor, playing a pivotal role in evaluating applications from marginalised communities and organisations seeking funding and support.Collaborating with the NYA, Layan and her peers facilitated the allocation of over £300 million to aid youth groups and disadvantaged communities nationwide. Nahian Joyeta - Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2024 Rotary International In Great Britain & Ireland 2024-04-23 | Despite experiencing eviction whilst helping her mum recover from major surgery, Nahian Joyeta never let these difficult circumstances affect her passion for school and it was at Ursuline Academy, Ilford, that she developed her passion for mathematics and robotics.Nahian flourished in the school’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programme and was recently a member of the Design Future London Challenge winning team for 2023. During this time, she has helped other young girls discover STEM, becoming a key figure in the Stemettes mentoring programme.Outside of education, Nahian keeps takes part in several community initiatives as a member of the Redbridge Youth Council.
