Brilliant original vinyl press of Jay Mitchell’s 1974 masterpiece your mama your daddy again Crazy Jimmy’s vinyl 2024-10-06 | Brilliant original vinyl press of Jay Mitchell’s 1974 masterpiece your mama your daddy againA classic from the Bahamas released on GBI records. Great review. If you're anything like me, the first time you hear Jay Mitchell you'll be sitting there with your jaw hanging open to the floor, a dazed looked in your eye, wondering WHY in god's name you've never heard of this guy. Well the biggest reason is that he is from the Bahamas. A contemporary who performed alongside all of the greatest US soul and funk legends of the 60s and 70s when they would appear in the Bahamas, Mitchell has a voice and presence that can match ANY of them (not to mention being one hell of a keyboardist). I first discovered his songs through Numero Records' wonderful comp of funky tracks from the Bahamas, and was crushed when I found that none of his LPs seem to be in print and tracking down original copies can be both a maddening and bank-breaking task. I've managed to round up three of his LPs, with the elusive grail "Impartiality" still slipping me - I've surrendered to the fact that I'll probably never land a copy unless I either hit the lottery or it gets reissued.However, in the meantime this rugged 1974 LP is keeping me satiated with a winning combo of super heavy funk mixed with the Goombay rhythms of the Bahamas. These are some raw uncut jams dripping with sweaty wah guitars, juicy organ, fatback bass, and relentless drumming. Mitchell is easily one of the best "soul" vocalist you've never heard, belting and bellowing, pushing every note like it is his last. The session was produced and engineered by another Bahamian legend, Frank Penn, who also wrote a couple of the tracks. This one is destined to get endless spins at my place. I'll put it simple - if you can find this album, don't think, just buy it.
Acid Archives Diaries #26 - Crystal Ball it’s not too late 1974/1977 tax scam release Crazy Jimmy’s vinyl 2024-09-26 | Acid Archives Diaries #26 - Crystal Ball it’s not too late 1974/1977 tax scam release Bucks best records Info on this Uber rare tax scam releaseHollywood multi-instrumentalist John Agostino was completely unaware that his 1974 tender psych-folk miniature was ever released. Miscredited to the invented artist Crystal Ball, his mystifying album is a curious example of a tax scam record in which shady labels would purposely form loss-making subsidiaries to write off for tax credit. Obtaining masters through dubious means, the labels would relegate entire pressings to deadstock warehouses, lazily leaking only a handful of copies into market. As was typically the case, Agostino’s culprits even took liberties in designing album art and naming what was essentially an unauthorized collection of unfinished material.This record also receives a very favorable review in the book “Acid Archives The Second Edition” published in 2010. Among the things written about this LP are, “Here’s one of the rarest (only three known copies) and most distinctly psychedelic of all tax scam records, one that if it were better known would be a major collectible. It’s probably the most significant and fascinating record released by the slippery folks at Album World. Need I say more..Update: there are maybe 20 known unique copies of this lp circulating around and in collections. This one didn’t end up in retail stores as a deleted lp so it’s safe to say most were destroyed.

This 1972 album has some Dylanesque vibes in the very best way possible with a mix of tracks featuring a full band with eclectic instruments (kazoo, uke, xylophone, pedal steal, banjo, bassoon etc) and some acoustic. Brings to mind the best of Dylan, Gene Clark & Nesmith fronted Monkees tracks. As for the vinyl pressing, it’s done well with a very quiet floor, wide separation and transparency. If you see one of these (good luck) don’t waffle on the price. It’s well worth it for the excellent songwriting, vocals, variety and quality pressing.
