After five years of work and hundreds of letters, the idea gained support nationwide. And in 1986, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed November 15th as National Philanthropy Day.
The Association of Fundraising Professionals was tasked to steward this day through the years. Today, the Orange County chapter of AFP honors this day by hosting one of the largest National Philanthropy Day events in the nation celebrating those who do so much for so many.Special Tribute to Artist, John Barber, National Philanthropy Day Heart Award creator since 2011.National Philanthropy Day Orange County2023-11-28 | At the invitation of Erwin Eisch, John Barber traveled to Germany to meet with Eisch and was subsequently accepted as his apprentice. And so it was in the basement of the Eisch glass factory that Barber first set foot on the road from studio apprentice to intricate decoration assisting Eisch in the creation of his glass masterworks. Later Eisch was instrumental in helping John gain admittance to the celebrated State School for Glass Design in Zwiezel, Germany where Barber completed an intensive two-year apprenticeship program studying in-depth the techniques of European Masters. In 1973, John returned to the United States and founded one of Southern California’s first privately owned glass blowing studios. He continued his research, focusing his interest on the rediscovery of lost techniques which produced the breathtaking glass masterwork of the Art Nouveau period. Beginning with Erwin Eisch and continuing for over a quarter century, John Barber has researched and utilized techniques of the Masters … and in doing so has achieved the status himself. In European tradition, an apprenticeship lasts 20 years — in 1992 John Barber at long last earned the right to sit at the Master’s bench. John Barber is now an accomplished, influential glassblower who has made a living working out of his home-studio on Laguna Canyon Road since 1988. His glass creations—mainly tabletop work ranging from stemware, bowls, vases, and some sculptures—have influenced a generation of new blowers, many of whom have apprenticed under him, including Gavin Heath, Marcus Thesing, Pete Lanigan, and Mike Panetta, among others. Barber and his wife Rebecca also co-founded the Studio Arts Gallery in Laguna Beach five years ago to help support and showcase local artists’ works. Barber has refused to rest on his laurels by taking his work into the public art realm, such as an installation commissioned by the Montage Laguna Beach Resort called Eternal Sunset. He created the work using an ancient glass casting technique known as pate de verre (paste of glass). The 32-foot-long glass mural rests at the hotel’s entrance, depicting a Catalina Island sunset view. The commission also included two 46-inch-tall illuminated urns named Eucalyptus Lanterns, which are placed on pedestals near the resort property’s entrance. “There are no shortcuts. You have to develop the skill and technique over a long period of time. It’s important to learn from others so ultimately you can develop your own unique style...one that respects your influences without being a slave to them.”2023 National Philanthropy Day Legacy Award, Leona Aronoff-SadaccaNational Philanthropy Day Orange County2023-11-28 | Leona and her husband Jack moved to Orange County in 1998, with her husband passing away after 40 years of marriage soon after they arrived. More than 40,000 graduates have gone through the college’s innovative program in its 33-year history with award-winning training that includes educators who speak English, Farsi, Spanish and Vietnamese. The vast majority of graduates are proudly employed in the beauty-care industry with many becoming business owners and industry leaders themselves. Advance Beauty College was teaming with 50 faculty members and 400 students receiving hands-on training as manicurists, estheticians, hair stylists and barbers. But, then the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit California. Overnight, the college executed distance learning and became a “hub of love,” by spearheading a national campaign — Nailing It For America — to deliver desperately needed personal protective equipment (PPEs) to healthcare workers fighting COVID-19. With its core values of “Inspire, Educate and Give Back,” college volunteers coordinated delivery of 1.2 million PPEs and 55,000 restaurant meals worth $30 million to healthcare workers and other front-line heroes to more than 150 locations throughout the U.S.

After having the opportunity to take service trips through her family’s Tarsadia Foundation to India, Cambodia and Africa, the poverty and an incredible community spirit she observed inspired her to create the Backpack Project to give back locally. In 2019, Karina’s efforts helped provide, along with nonprofit partners, 5,500 backpacks with school supplies, groceries, haircuts and food to low-income families. This fall, due to COVID19, Karina and her team have shifted plans to work directly with partners and schools to ensure that students are set up for success, with plans to distribute 15,000 backpacks through Santa Ana Unified, Anaheim Elementary, and Placentia-Yorba Linda school partners, along with partnering with Nailing It, MovingForwardTogether Coalition in Garden Grove, Advance Beauty College, and OC United Way. She credits Nithin Jilla, Dreams for Schools executive director, as her mentor in connecting to the community.
