On Saturday, June 13th, 2026, a once-in-a-lifetime event happened in front of a little ice cream shop in the small town of Dupont, Pennsylvania. The event was originally talked about for years by train enthusiasts, almost as a running joke. But it happened. The Union Pacific Railroad, restored a "Big Boy" locomotive to operation, and they have since run it on the mainline. For the year 2026, America's 250th Birthday celebration, the Union Pacific Railroad operated the world's largest operating steam locomotive from Sacramento, California to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The locomotives would meet at Dupont Junction, a connection built between the Delaware & Hudson and Lehigh Valley Railroads in 1973, to help facilitate the movement of trains between Binghamton, NY and Allentown, PA. Today, the D&H is part of the Norfolk Southern system, and the LV is part of the Reading & Northern Railroad's mainline.
HUGE SHOUTOUT to Choo Choo's Ice Cream Stand right on Main Street in Dupont, PA, for opening up their parking lot FOR FREE to those who wanted to witness a moment in history. This was probably the first time these locomotives were in the same place at the same time, and meeting face to face on adjacent tracks was a sight to behold.
