RDP1408 may seem like a cliched, shallow, Hollywoodized attempt at horror that owes its whole existence to a short story by Stephen King and the films of the genre that preceded it. But that’s a surface appraisal. In reality what lies beneath the surface of this film is a brilliant examination of what a person’s life amounts to when it reaches its end, what binds us in our own personal hell and, overall, what a person needs to do in order to escape that hell.

With few options left, he must figure out a way to overcome his isolation before it’s too late. In the 1960 film, Eyes Without a Face, a teenage girl is tragically disfigured after a car accident. When her father fakes her death, she is forced to confine herself in her bedroom on the top floor of his mansion in the country. She is physically removed from society, her fiance, and hides her horrific scars with a featureless mask. Made decades apart, the two films draw dramatic parallels, both dealing with the effects of isolation and the need to have control over our lives. Daring to shine a light into perhaps the darkest corners of the human psyche: what might you be willing to allow in when you are vulnerable and alone? To what dark depths would you sink to ease pain, find salvation or hope, an illusory glimmer of light to guide you out of hell?

Given the current state of the world, can humanity, as one species, come together to combat the greatest threats to their existence before it's too late? Before they meet their end?

Dick wrote the short story "The Minority Report" that posed a poignant philosophical question: is the future set in stone? Can we change it? Fast forward to 2002 where Spielberg and company took the themes established by Dick and developed them into a critique of where the future is heading and how it will effect society and individuals. Aesthetically and thematically the critique centers around romanticism versus existentialism. As broad as these two arenas are, the angle that each is given in the film to support the story offers a deep cutting commentary on how society shapes us and what we’d have to do in order to overcome the negative influences that can push us into a dark, hopeless, existential hole as well as a possible answer to the question first posed by Dick 64 years ago.

We may all be prone to going off the deep end from time to time, but what if we stayed under the water? Before that happens, maybe we should ask ourselves what pushed us over the edge in the first place. The Shining shares a myth that imparts relevant truths, something that we all could have been told around a fire from a wise ancestor if our cultures were still organized that way; a ghost story, a cautionary tale designed to frighten your child self and keep you from a similar path: the myth of the madman.
