Unprecedented: Monsoon Winds Breached Himalayan Mountains Bringing Rain and Snow to Tibetan Plateau

The crossing of monsoon moisture over the Himalayas into Tibet in September 2025 was made possible by a convergence of unusual meteorological factors not normally seen in that region.

Key Meteorological Factors
Record Number of Western Disturbances: There were 19 western disturbances during the Southwest Monsoon season—far more than the usual 4–6—influencing the atmospheric dynamics above northern India. These disturbances interacted directly with moist monsoon winds.

Intensified Monsoon Winds and Uplift: The interaction of these disturbances with the monsoon increased the vertical transport of air, pushing moisture-laden winds to altitudes well over 2000 meters, well above the normal monsoon height of around 1600–1700 meters. This allowed moisture to breach the Himalayan barrier.

Atmospheric Heating and Expansion: The collision of western disturbances with strong monsoonal advection led to warming, uplift, and expansion of moist air, creating the necessary conditions for clouds and moisture to spill northward across gaps in the mountains.

Possible Involvement of Atmospheric Rivers and Subtropical Jet: Some climate scientists suggested atmospheric rivers or shifts in the subtropical jet stream may also have helped transport moisture beyond the Himalayas.

Role of Climate Change: Underlying all these, climate change has likely contributed to more frequent and intense disturbances, amplified monsoon energies, and greater unpredictability, making such rare events possible.

The synergy of these meteorological events—particularly the rare and robust sequence of western disturbances colliding with a vigorous monsoon—enabled the monsoon moisture to cross the Himalayas and reach Tibet for the first time in recorded history.
