For us, the Home Alone soundtrack is the perfect representation of childhood Christmas, as only John Williams can deliver. We had a lot of fun revisiting the same location from our Greensleeves video a few years back, as a nod to the title (Somewhere In My Memory). And thanks to the Nottingham Presbyterian Church, we captured some beautiful scenes in front of their historic stone church. It made for the perfect Christmas display, and was in keeping with Kevin McCallister's visit to church when he was feeling down. We spent two very chilly nights filming just at sunset and into the night, and also brought in a 'stunt' violin and cello so our proper ones don't catch cold! Otherwise, it might take weeks for them to recover, and a definite trip to the instrument doctor. We also had a helping hand with lighting (Thanks, Lola Rublesky!). We've never used added lighting at an outdoor shoot, so that took some getting used to. Having it made all the difference, though! We were inspired by so much of the writing, but these are some particular passages we were trying to bring to life in the music:" Yet, with one look at them, you’d see they felt its {the sun's} absence, in the heaviness..."".... Without it, life lacked even a semblance of veracity... And they felt it.Every soul in Caverna felt it, even if they didn’t know it."For this phrase, we highlighted the heaviness in the cello part right from the opening, as the cello chords slide down, dragging you down with it. This is a recurring theme throughout. "The tunnel yawned wide, its throats swallowed up in unknown distances, everyinch smothered in an ever present and strengthening darkness."This line is evoked through the increasing volume beginning as a quiet melody and increasing in strength as the piece progresses.We also wanted express a general folk quality, so we utilized a dorian scale for some of the themes (for those who understand a little music theory :P) to bring to life the rustic lifestyle of Caverna's populace.Excerpt read by Ellie Maureen:The tunnel yawned wide, its throats swallowed up in unknown distances, every inch smothered in an ever present and strengthening darkness.The ruddy, dim lights of the lanterns did their best to illuminate the vague environment of the Avenue. Sub streets ran perpendicular to the tunnel, turning both left and right and small, crumbling buildings sat smack in the middle of the throughway, like a little town all of its own. Kiara had heard of this in some of the larger streets, but had never seen it for herself.Thin, rotting doors (if any at all) lined the walls of the tunnel, entrances of some of the meager homes, others still resided high above on a second level where old ladders full of missing rungs and wooden staircases led to the rickety platforms and natural stone catwalks running overhead, skinny and coughing layers of rock dust whenever feet traversed across. And still, with all this ample living space, there were those without even the simplest of homes.Shoeless, bedraggled strangers wandered about with nothing but old rags for clothes and a sad sort of desultory shuffle to their feet. Others sat against the cave walls with no more than a creaky crate for sitting and an empty cup for begging to call their own. Tear streaked and hollow faces stared mindlessly at the stone walls. Most of them seemed to have nothing to live for, no hope, no joy left to spark even the smallest of fires.Kiara looked on in indignant disgust at people literally living on top of one another and in their own garbage, the stench that coated the air persistently attesting to the latter.She didn’t know what she had expected. Deep down she always wanted to believe that, yes, they had less than her, smaller houses undoubtedly, but in her mind they, at least, all had homes, at the very worst living simpler lives without nearly as many pleasures as a royal, but not wholly devoid of comfort. To her they were... Cozy, tucked safely away, across town. And yet here she was, eyes open wide for the first time and seeing for herself the true extent of their need.

The story was light on the mystery, but satisfied despite that. Enola was a strong character, though we did think ample license was taken with Sherlock and Mycroft, leaving them as little more than names and faces. However, the license taken with creating the characters of Enola and her mother was far less upsetting to the story. All in all, any story with the word 'nincompoop' in it deserves a watch! (Julia says that it sounds like I don't have very high standards, but hardly any movies contain the word 'nincompoop'! It sounds highly selective, if you ask me)While we had hoped that Enola had played the violin, we were happy to hear a violin prominently showcased in the Wild Child featured track. It works so well as an instrumental because of the two octave vocal range and the variation in the melody. There's also tons of textures to play around with, and it was fun experimenting while trying to reproduce the electropop sounds (lots of ponticello 😍). This arrangement relies a lot on bow techniques in general to produce as much variety in color as possible. You'll hear sul tasto (over the fingerboard for that ethereal quality) ponticello (at the bridge) and everything in between to capture the different voices and emotions throughout. It can be a very delicate process to produce these colors, but the pay off is huge. We love seizing opportunity to highlight the variety of timbres that the violin and cello can produce! The variations you hear in our arrangement were inspired by a set that we found recently, and after some tweaking (and composing) it became the ultimate violin and cello duet!
