Ilse de Ziah 2023-01-23 | After not playing with my father Norbert for a long time, it was glorious to play again, first on piano at home and then the treat of this lovely Pipe Organ in All Saints' Anglican Church, Murwillumbah. We loved creating this impromptu performance!!

It's very tricky to play with Pipe Organ, the distance from each other, low visibility, hearing each instrument at different times, hence difficulty communicating, difficult to hear the organ over the cello when close to the console, and for the organist to hear the cello if further afield...a wonderful exploration of sound...

Ilse de Ziah 2023-01-21 | I spent the week in Murwillumbah with my parents. It was wonderful to play with my father again after about 15 years. The last time was in Ireland with Norbert playing on the organ he put in and rebuilt in Ballinrostig Church in County Cork. Lots has happened since then.

I found this piece by Arnold Krug and searched everywhere for a different copy, as page 7 is missing. We just improvised an end to get around it.

The rector of the All Saints' Church in Murwillumbah very kindly allowed us to play the lovely organ.

I sat out on the doorstep yesterday as the sun was setting and played my new arrangement of The Coolin. I am enjoying the tropical Spring weather up in Murwillumbah, Australia at the moment. I was touring in the U.S. before coming here, and played this arrangement of The Coolin in many of the concerts.

I don't have my own cello with me so I am playing on an old Boosey & Hawkes cello I found in a dark corner of my mothers basement. It's hard to play in tune and tears up the fingers a bit as the action is way too high and the bridge is ridiculous...I love to play it despite that. It actually doesn't sound too bad on this recording, which is done on a ZOOM Q8 handy video recorder.

Lament for Rogers ONeill - Ilse de Ziah - Irish Cello

Ilse de Ziah 2022-03-01 | LAMENT FOR ROGERS O’NEILL. Was said to have been written in 1904 by Francis O'Neill “on the death of a young collegian of brilliant promise in Chicago.” Rogers O’Neill was the last surviving son of compiler Captain Francis O’Neill (three younger brothers had all died in childhood, on the same day, from diptheria) who contracted spinal meningitis and died at the age of 18. In addition to his academic success, Rogers was also a promising violinist. What heartbreak now around the world with parents losing sons and daughters to disease, floods, and war, I play this lament for the difficult feelings of sadness and loss that people are juggling at this moment in history. We have just got to a turning point in the pandemic (here in Ireland anyway), have huge work to do in saving our planet and dealing with the consequences of terrible flooding and other issues, and then someone decides now is a good time to add to the misery and start a war. Times are tough, it's all wrong and it can feel overwhelming. This Lament is my way of expressing that and being real and connected to life. I hope it soothes you and I hope you play or sing one too! Cello Boogie inspired by Guitar Boogie by Arthur Smith - Ilse de Ziah

This Cello Boogie Woogie is inspired by Artur Smith's Guitar Boogie and borrows from his ideas and from the piano tradition of the Boogie Woogie style. It is in the key of C which sits beautifully as a natural home of Boogie for the cello, just as the key of E is the natural home for guitar blues.
The piece has eleven sections of the 12 bar blues pattern and if any section is too difficult for where you are at the moment, you can leave it out and still play the piece. The turnaround bars, rhythmic patterns and 'licks' over each chord can also be used in improvisations if you are playing a 12 bar blues with other musicians. Learn some of them by memory to have at hand, and after playing this for a time you may find you want to make your own patterns to add to these or replace any.

This is the second of a series of cello blues and boogie pieces.

In our recent performance at Ballymaloe Grainstore as a series for County Council Pops we played lots of pieces my grandad Sam Drury used to play on fiddle. He was virtuosic, played all the recital classics by heart, and teachers would often say to me and my sister 'just play like Sam did!'
Kreisler’s bowing technique, tone colour, and vibrato style influenced almost every concert violinist of the 20th century. When he came to australia in 1925 he was regarded as a sort of Knight in Shining armour and whilst there my grandfather spent time with Kreisler. I would have loved to be there for the session!
As a composer, Kreisler wrote many pieces for violin and piano that epitomize the colorful recital fare of his day in the early 1900s. Several of these formed a sort of musical travelogue. Turning to Vienna, the place of his birth, the famous Liebesfreud (Love's Joy) is part of a set of Old Viennese Melodies, a set of three short pieces for violin and piano. The three pieces are titled Liebesfreud (Love's Joy), Liebesleid (Love's Sorrow), and Schön Rosmarin (Lovely Rosemary).

This song from England from the 1500s was part of a Mystery play that was performed in Coventry annually at Christmas. It is still played around the world every Christmas.

The beautiful medieval harmonies and odd bar lengths are a feature in this arrangement, and the three cellos blend beautifully.

This version arranged for three cellos, and also includes a solo cello version. Plus included is an mp3 with count in of cello 2 & 3 parts to play along with.

The three parts are easy to play. The first cello part uses fourth position and cello 2 & 3 can be played in first position. The time changes are an enjoyable challenge. For intermediate players there is a solo cello version which can also be developed with ornamentation and played with the other cello parts.

This beautiful Christmas song from Finland is arranged for three cellos, and also includes a solo cello version. Plus included is an mp3 with count in of cello 2 & 3 parts to play along with.

Leevi Madetoja was a late romantic/early modern composer, rarely known outside Nordic countries. He was a student of, and a contemporary of Sibelius. His compositions have a blend of Finnish melancholy and folk melodies from his native region of Ostrobothnia along with a French stylistic approach of clarity and elegance.The song lyrics describe ‘Getting out of your daily grind and worries, christmas is coming, put all the troubles aside’. In Madetoja's Finnish style, the music is joyous, yet tinged with a melancholy.

The three parts are easy to play, and can be played in first position. For intermediate players there is a solo cello version which can also be played with the other cello parts. This is what you will hear in the video. The scrolling score is the written version included here, with the three separate parts.

Thank you to Sue from the U.K. who suggested this piece. This beautiful traditional song is sung at Christmas and translates to Mary Bore a Son to God. It is a song praising Mary. The melody is probably older than the words.

This arrangement is in A minor and presents the melody once low then repeated high, followed by a traditional tune as used in the sung version by Cara Dillon.

It is intermediate level as it uses thumb position, yet is simple to learn and an enjoyable piece to play. An excellent choice for your family and friends solo cello concert at Christmas.

I filmed this under the sprouting oak tree in my backyard on the last day of May, and the first day of summer after a very cold and wet year so far. The sound of the farmer herding cattle, shouting and beeping, and the river flowing, birds singing, wind, all brought this piece to life for me. I recommend playing outdoors this summer when you can, it is a glorious experience!

A beautiful and slow Irish piece for solo cello. The cello sheet music available is an arrangement of a song from around 1750s. It was originally sung in Irish.
The song was translated from Irish by George Petrie in 1855 and also appears in 'A General Collection of the Ancient Irish Music' by Edward Bunting in 1796 where it is attributed to Turlough O'Carolan.

La Cumparsita - Cork Light Orchestra

Ilse de Ziah 2021-02-26 | Margaret couldn't be part of this video but plays violin with the orchestra and it's her birthday today, so a big happy birthday to her from us all!

The Cork Light Orchestra is a community orchestra dedicated to playing lively, light and popular music for audiences usually outdoors in the sunshine amongst crowds! We rehearse weekly when live, and meet weekly online to play to each other and chat. During lockdown we have been creating videos and recordings. It is incredible how much talent has developed despite us not being able to rehearse together. The group has been a lifeline and has kept us motivated and inspired. We have so many artworks, recordings and photos which we will eventually share, but for now, we have reached a beautiful pinnacle together performing a piece from our repertoire. It is one of our favourites for its passion, power and excitement to play. We recorded one by one, building up the orchestra so each added player could could hear the other parts, and I know you'll hear the difference. We are very excited to share this with you and I hope it adds spice to your day!

Love Me Tender was based on a tune written by George Poulton called Aura Lea which was first published as sheet music in 1861. Elvis's 'Love me Tender' used new lyrics by Ken Darby. The original are lovely too and are apt now for the coming of Spring. I made the Cello sheet music arrangement with a nod to both. I love making my sheet music arrangements for cellists and I hope you enjoy whether a cellist or not!

This is an Aisling also known as a vision poem, from the 18th century. In an Aisling a beautiful woman visits in a dream and laments the state of the Irish. Sung in Irish, they were a powerful political expression of the repression in Ireland at the hands of the English. I filmed this and the footage of the area on the 29th December 2020, one hundred years after the Midleton ambush, a battle in my local town of Midleton.

The Gypsy Jazz genre has exploded in popularity in recent years. This music is usually based around the sound of guitars and violin.
The style came into being with the Quintet of the Hot Club of France in the 1930’s. Featuring the gypsy guitar of Django Reinhardt and the violin of Stephane Grappelli. There are gypsy jazz bands all over the world nowadays. There is lots of jamming taking place amongst its adherents.
I didn’t want cellists to miss out on this style of playing.

The phrases in this study can be adapted for any situation. You can change the notes to come up with your own variations on the phrases. If you hear phrase you like over a particular chord, you can try it in different keys and songs. Experiment where the same chord occurs in other situations.

This etude is based on the style of the guitarist Django. He was a master of playing “decorated” arpeggios. He played lines that outlined the chord changes and connected them in a jazzy way.

This etude is also inspired by swing style saxophone players of the same era. Horn players generally have the best lines.

I am planning on doing some more of these cello studies. 1930’s style jazz is a good place to start playing jazz because the chord changes are simple and easy to hear. Sweet Georgia Brown was a well known song from this early jazz era and a jam session favourite.

We came into 2020 with 24 confirmed gigs and a further 8 planned, a busy program. We performed the first 3 including our annual concert at Fota House on 28 February which was a sell out. Then the world stopped! It was heartbreaking to have to walk away from our Gig Diary and having to cancel our weekly practice.

There was a slight reprieve mid summer, we practiced for a few weeks in a community hall in Midleton adhering to safety guidelines. We were able to resurrect 5 gigs, we performed two of them and restrictions were imposed on us again, all quite depressing.

The Cork Light Orchestra has 22 members, its affairs are looked after by a Council and Ilse our Musical Director. We were faced with the problem of trying to keep the group together, something that has produced great creativity.

Ilse started a Whatsapp group through which members were invited to video themselves playing a 'party piece' this has been very successful and has developed from music with topical and fun postings. Ilse also hosts a Zoom 'Hang' on a Monday evening. These both help to keep the group and friends together.

We have all worked on four video split screen projects, this latest one is comprised of 'Silent Night' including vocals in French, Finnish, German and Irish, ending with 'We wish you a Merry Christmas'.

Sunday cello club online - Every Fortnight, the Cello Club meets for a worldwide cello meeting via Zoom. Come and meet cellists from around the world to play and listen. The cello club is a space to share some music you are working on, try out a new piece, talk about cello and get positive feedback from each other. It gives you a great opportunity to have something to motivate you to work towards every fortnight.

This is a non judgemental space where we can watch, listen, learn and be inspired by one another. There is no pressure to play unless you want to, you are just as welcome to listen as to play. Guest teachers will join now and again to listen in and give tips or to play and share repertoire ideas and even cello sheet music.

The cello club meets every second Sunday from 17:00 - 18:30 Irish Time (UTC+1 October 18th then UTC 0)

Caoineadh an Spailpín (The Spalpeen’s Lament)
This air from West Kerry is referring to a spailpín, a wandering farm labourer. According to the Devon Commission of 1843 these itinerant labourers were “the most wretched of the many wretched classes in Ireland”, often only earning a daily meal. Theirs could be a violent life with extreme malnourishment, and many died young. There must have been many a Caoineadh an Spailpín sung for those who died.

The keening practice in Ireland is referred to as Caoineadh, which means ‘to cry, to weep’. The earliest record is from the 8th century. This ritualised lamentation for the dead took place around the deceased in their house or another communal setting. Usually led by a bean chaointe (keening woman), who was often paid for the service, it would build up and up and could go on for three days. The keening would be improvised verses using a formulaic opening line followed by short rhymed lines. It would include a litany of who the person was, with positive and negative themes expressed. The positive being who they loved, who loved them, their generosity, prosperity, bravery, even their clothing. And the negative could be grievances about the deceased, or who was responsible for their death, and who their enemies were. It was accompanied by movements such as rocking, kneeling and clapping. Groups of women would join and support the bean chaointe. They would cry their hearts out in a huge cathartic release of grieving. The tone could be hard and intense, with tremendous power. When you heard them keening it was said the hair would rise on the back of your neck. There are no actual recordings of keening during a ceremony, and the few that exist are sung as examples of what was sung. The nature of the music was not something that would be documented. Keening was banned by the Catholic church from 1670 as it was a pagan remnant and women could not be a conduit between earth and the afterlife as it was thought to be solely the priests job. There are stories of priests whipping women away from the graves as they wailed.

Based on the singing of Kitty Gallagher, this is one of the few recorded keening songs. Traditional May song popular in Ireland, written by Mary E. Walsh, and published as the Crowning Hymn in the book Wreath of Mary, 1871. It is sung during a ‘May Crowning’ service in the Catholic Church, and is one of several May devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

’Sé an Tiarna m’Aoire (The Lord is my Shepherd)
This melody was written by sacred music composer Fintan O’ Carroll (1922-1981). The Irish text is by Fr Pádraig Ó Fianachta. This is the Irish version of The Lord is my Shepherd (Psalm 23) often used in the Catholic mass as a Responsorial Psalm.
