When Ukrainian infantrymen are under attack, or need support on an assault, they often call upon the firepower of mortarmen who lay just a few kilometers back from the frontline. In a tough spot, these men, and the 60-120 mm shells they unleash on the poppers fields of Ukraine, can mean the difference between life and death for a frontline solider. From holes in the ground they surface, with coordinates and gritted determination, to let off a volley before a drone ends their service early. These are the men I got to know during nights embedded with national guard troops defending the Kharkiv region from a renewed offensive.
