We are creating all-new action figures using the tried and true methods of the 1980s and 1990s! Once Ron Rudat and Mark Pennington completed their design work, Bill Merklein and Mike Good began the task of bringing these characters to life in action figure form! Using Ron and Mark's figure sculpture sheets, Bill and Mike hand sculpted the figures shown in this video. While Bill and Mike sculpted the figures, Mark Gerwig of Mark 2 Toys got to work 3D modeling the accessories. Once accessory modeling was complete, 3D resin prints were made. Once Bill and Mike's figure sculpts were complete, they were cast in resin by Scott Andrews of Lightbeam 3D and painted by Matthew LeCroy of LeCroy's Toys, Ray Murphy (@raymurphygijaf), and Chris Scott of Grindhouse Toys. The gallery below will be updated as new paintmasters roll in, and the BackerKit will not be closed until all paintmasters are complete: operationrecall.com/roll-call.html

I’m at peace with it. Documenting and sharing the art and the creator interviews is more important to me than personally owning a bunch of rarities.
Don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to own 30-40 year old artifacts that were used in the creation of The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero Omnibus Hardcover! 💥🇺🇸💥

According to READFIVE.CO.UK "the first edition has sold out, and the second print run pre-order is now closed. In order to be included on the waitlist" visit READFIVE.CO.UK
So I messaged them on FB, and we lined up a trade! (It appears there are perks to being an author after all!)
Greg wrote me back and we set up the trade. He also told me that in addition to getting the second print going, work on Vol. 2 is underway. Then Gianni Venturini shipped me this book.
THANK YOU Greg and Gianni!
This video shares a quick overview of the content of the book, and a ton of quotes from the folks that helped bring this book to life by supporting the project. Thank you ALL for your support! We could never have made such a comprehensive tribute to The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero without you.
There are 1,900/8,400 sets left. Don't miss your chance to own this once-in-a-lifetime publication. Order your set at TheArtOfGIJOE.com
But, The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero Omnibus Hardcover cost more than we ever expected. Total expenditures for 2022-2023 were $694,909 while total sales were $549,978. It's not all doom and gloom though: total expenditures to date for 2024 are $100,601 while sales have topped 196,073! We're trending in the right direction. That brings total expenses to $795,510 and total sales to $746,051 to date.
I want to bridge that -$49,459 gap, but I don't want to reward the "Wait for Ross" crowd! (or is it "Wait for Ollie's" these days?)

Let's ROLL!
Eight years after beginning The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero softcover series, the ultimate Omnibus Hardcover collection has arrived! Let’s check it out.
The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero Omnibus Hardcover is an unparalleled celebration of the art of A Real American Hero! Already own the softcovers? Give this officially licensed hardcover a look, it is bigger and better in every way.
First, bigger. The original softcover books are 8" x 11” tall, and the slipcase is 8.5" x 11.5” tall. The new Omnibus Hardcover is 13.5” x 14.5” and the clamshell case pushes it to an astounding 14" x 15"!
Next, better. This hardcover isn't just taller and wider, it is packed with new and remastered content!
This comprehensive celebration of the painted art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero features every carded figure, vehicle, playset, poster and peripheral product featuring painted art released from 1982-1994, plus an unprecedented look at some unreleased paintings that never made it through to production.
The softcover set totaled 460 pages. The new Omnibus Hardcover is a mammoth 712 pages! So how did we fill these new pages?
We’ve been on a mission to document the stories of the folks that created this timeless artwork. We’ve traveled to Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Queens, Manhattan, Connecticut, South Carolina, Florida, Chicago and more to interview folks like Kirk Bozigian (former G.I.JOE Brand Manager from 1982-1986 and Vice President of Boys Toys from 1990-1995), Ron Rudat (former Hasbro designer and creator of the first six years of G.I.JOE figures from 1982-1987), Mark Pennington (former Hasbro designer and creator of the next three years of G.I.JOE figures from 1987-1989), Ed Morrill (former Partner of CLS&M, the packaging firm that created G.I.JOE packaging from 1969-1989), Doug Hart (former Hasbro artist responsible for the lion's share of late 80s and early 90s G.I.JOE paintings!), Vincent D'Alleva (former G.I.JOE Brand Manager from 1990-1994), and Bill Merklein (contract sculptor that crafted over 70 G.I.JOE figures from 1983-1989).
We conducted comprehensive interviews and solved some of the unsolved packaging mysteries that have puzzled collectors for decades. Not only do these creators’ stories fill the pages of the Omnibus Hardcover, you can hear their stories first hand with The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero DVD and Blu-ray Digipack!
The Omnibus Hardcover features offset lithograph printing throughout and a beautiful 95# cover wrapped on a 120pt. board with scuff resistant lamination.
The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero Omnibus Hardcover features a wraparound collage of paintings by every major illustrator that contributed to the brand.
The massive two-sided dust jacket measures 38" wide by 14.5" tall, and you'll be able to take it off and frame it. A modified design is printed on the inside of the dust jacket with logos and text removed, so you'll have an unobscured look at the wonderful art!
The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero also includes a 14" x 15" clamshell case! This clamshell case was designed as an homage to the 1982 Official Collector Display Case.
Finally, The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero features a Limited Edition Art Portfolio measuring 23" wide by 14.5" tall that is packed with 24 unadorned art prints: twelve selected by the Kickstarter backers and another twelve selected by the editors. These 11” x 14” offset lithograph prints have been meticulously restored and are ready to frame.
The clamshell case, book, folder and prints weigh in at over 19 pounds! You have to hold this set in your hands to believe it.
The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero Omnibus Hardcover ships in December of 2023!

Mark, Wan, and Mike talk JOEFEST 2023 with very special guest Carson Mataxis of 3DJoes.com and Operation: Recall!
In previous videos we’ve showed the articulated armatures that we’ll be sculpting on (AKA “bucks”).
This video shows the guidance that we are giving to the figure sculptor, Bill Merklein. Just like back in the 80s and 90s, he’ll have character line art and a 1:1 scale figure sculpture sheet (360 turnaround). As a bonus I’ve added some photo references. He should have everything he’ll need to bring Ron Rudat and Mark Pennington’s designs to life!
Initially developed to hold together the Operation: Recall bucks, we are now digging in on testing for 3.75” action figures. So far so good!

Since the first Joe Fest O:R panel, we’ve been thinking through how and where to add size variance to the O:R figures. 10 of the 18 figure sculpts will be standard size, the other 8 will vary by 0.25” in height and/or width. This video shows six different buck sizes:
Dark Reapers wide ⬅️➡️ male buck,
Bear Claw tall ⬆️ male buck,
Sol Eagle wide and tall ⬅️⬆️➡️ male buck,
Retelo standard ⏺️ male buck (with sculpt by Bill Merklein),
Runback short and narrow ➡️⬇️⬅️ female buck,
Damselfly narrow ➡️⬅️ female buck,
Breacher standard ⏺️ male buck.
A standard ⏺️ female buck is in development (for Lilith) and that will round out the assortment.

As previously announced, the creative team have begun ideation on the Operation: Recall Year One figures.
I wanted to quickly share a bunch of Runback and Supply Chain ideation sketches that Mark just shared with me. I love getting to see the process, and I thought you might too.
Ideation is the stage where, in Mark’s words, you “just try anything and you always find elements you like.”
There are many elements from each of these drawings I love. Each exploration bears fruit.
The next step after ideation is to review with Kirk Bozigian to decide which elements to keep, and then Mark will move into tighter drawings of the revised design.
We have many months of great times ahead, watching each of these characters evolve.
If you love seeing this kind of preproduction documentation, consider adding the Operation: Recall book to your pledge when we open the upcoming BackerKit. This book will show the creative process for every figure we unlock.
It’s GO time!
