While the constant river crossings did get tedious, the experience of hiking in the Ozarks of Arkansas was one I shall remember for my entire life. Crossing the Buffalo River to Woolum made me feel as if I was Washington crossing the Delaware.
4. Ozark Highlands Trail - Sections 5,6,7 Trekking On 2013-05-14 | Moving toward mid April on the Ozark Highlands Trail, the weather finally turned on me again. With the threat of tornados in the forecast, I decided to take a day, get off the trail, and seek shelter in Clarksville Arkansas. Allong the way, I saw a beautiful Western Rat Snake, experienced my first thunderstorm in the south, and crossed yet more creeks and rivers.

My thru-hike may have had a rocky start, but I hit the trail again once recovering fully with fantastic results. The range as a whole began to grow on me in a very real way. Something about those rolling bluff-lined mountains and deep, cool rivers really spoke to me.

Upon hearing about this, I purchased the guidebook and put the trail on my ever-growing list. In this episode, you'll see me get aquainted with this rugged wilderness, and for the first time, run into some serious trouble. Torys Cave - The Adventure Underground Trekking On 2012-10-17 | Tory's Cave in New Milford, Connecticut is a great place for the novice caver to get the feel for the sport. Hearing about this, I decided to dawn my headlamp and go forth into the darkness. Putting on my GoPro, I first descended in early September 2012 with a friend of mine, not knowing that I would quickly get hooked on the sport. This film chronicles one of my many revisits during the two months I was in the area. The lighting is bad both on my GoPro and with my Cannon. As it is an oldschool GoPro, I cannot adjust the camera settings to let in more light. With the Cannon, I just was able to discover how to do that, as it is a very basic model. Any other caving films will have better lighting... Enjoy.

4. Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail - Day Four Trekking On 2012-04-25 | The fourth and final installment of my April 2012 thru-hike of the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail. I began my day at Max Israel Shelter very early in the morning, before the sun came up. Before the day was through, I was going to have to hike the 11 miles to the end of the trail, then the two miles to the base of Sunapee, followed by the one mile to the road. All this, not to mention the 60 mile hitch back to the Jeep at Monadnock. It was an incredible hike through an incredible place.
3. Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail - Day Three Trekking On 2012-04-23 | The third day of my April 2012 thru-hike of the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail. It was by far, my longest day at just under 20 miles of hiking. The going began to get more difficult, as the carriage roads morphed into side trails on rolling mountains. The weather was very hospitable, but the warmth began to make me sweat more and more. My last night on the trail, I spent at Max Israel Shelter just short of the Sunapee Ridge.
2. Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail - Day Two Trekking On 2012-04-23 | The second day of my April 2012 thru-hike of the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail. I set out mid morning and trekked through the amazing landscape of western New Hampshire. Most of it was on ancient carriage roads, long since abandoned.
1. Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail - Day One Trekking On 2012-04-21 | The first day of my April 2012 thru-hike of the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail. I started out late, at something like three in the afternoon and began my hike to the trailhead at the summit of Mount Monadnock. From there, I descended the mountain and continued on to Spiltoir shelter, where I spent my first night. For the finale of this section, I show and explain the gear I brought.
4. Grafton Loop Trail - Day Three - Old Spec and Whitecap Trekking On 2011-08-22 | The final day of hiking was as difficult as the previous day. The hike up Old Speck was very steep which sapped my energy for the rest of the day. That mountain is unbelievable. It was an 18 mile day all together, and much harder on my knees than I expected. Maine has some of the most rugged terrain I have ever hiked and I find myself always surprised by what it throws at me.
3. Grafton Loop Trail - Day Two - Baldpate Trekking On 2011-08-22 | Day two of my Grafton Loop Trail hike consisted of two tough climbes up Long Mountain and then Baldpate Mountain. In the low notches between the peaks, there were numerous pristine upland brooks, many large enough to harbor brook trout. I really wished I had my fishing rod with me on this one. I suppose that's for next time.
2. Grafton Loop Trail - Day One - Stewart Campsite Trekking On 2011-08-21 | My stay at Stewart Campsite was a peaceful one. It's a beautiful place set on the side of Puzzle Mountain near a small brook. I talk about the gear that I took with me. Most of this is the gear I take on all of my treks.

In this section, I travel through the northern catskill mountains. My streak of fantastic weather finally breaks and I get completely drenched day after day until I decide to take some time off until the weather clears. Once getting back to the trail, the weather has cleared and I continue northbound with new energy.
4. New York Long Path - Northern Shawangunks and Southern Catskills Trekking On 2011-06-01 | The fourth installment of my 2011 thru-hike of the New York Long Path. In this section, I hike through the beautiful northern Shawangunk Mountains as well as the very difficult Southern Catskills. The hikes were very long but incredibly scenic. In the middle of all this, was a nine or ten mile road walk which was mostly on old country roads which rose up to meet the southern Catskills.
3. New York Long Path - Orange County and Southern Shawangunks Trekking On 2011-05-31 | The third installment of my 2011 thru-hike of the New York Long Path. Orange County roadwalks dominate this section. From one sunbaked road to the next, the "path" continues until it finally enters the woods on the Shawangunk Ridge. I did over 30 trail miles through Orange County to get to Berentsen's Campground, where I took a zero day. From there, the fantastically beautiful Shangunk Ridge rose above and the trail contined along the ridgetop.
