2:27 - “lætur fjöllin virðast blá” I’ll be honest, I’m not entirely sure what this passage is supposed to mean.
The line translates literally as “(distance) makes the mountains look blue”. Now, I can only assume there’s more to this sentence than just its literal meaning.
The expression “to be blue” (“að vera blár”) means “to be blue-eyed”, but this seems even more off than the sentence’s literal translation (what does a blue-eyed mountain look like?).
Another Icelandic idiomatic expression is “blue ahead” (“blátt áfram”), which can be used to say “simply, simple as that, simply put, frankly” or, in the form “to be blue ahead” (“að vera blátt áfram”), “to be straightforward, to be frank, to be in one’s natural form”. This latter expression seems to fit better the context, so I decided to go for it, and picked “show their true colours” as an English equivalent to the Icelandic idiom. However, be warned I’m uncertain about this interpretation, and that these are the only alternatives I could find.

I was quite frankly shitting in my pants at the idea that the "Nordic productions" which had been announced would just be one sole cast touring the Nordic countries singing in the same language. I'm so relieved this was clearly not the case, and I can't wait to hear the rest of the performances

The lyrics are a pretty free adaptation of a Norwegian medieval ballad titled “Møya i ulveham” (TSB A 19).

*A couple of notes on the cultural background on which the song is built.
- “Wolf pelt”: in Nordic folklore, it was common belief that wearing the enchanted skin of a given animal would make the person turn into that animal, until the fur was removed. If the magic cast on the skin was a curse, then the person wearing it could hardly remove the skin of their own.
That of humans-turned-animals by wearing their pelt is an ancient myth, that goes as far back as the Viking age, where “úlfhéðinn” (“wolf-pelt”) was one of the names by which berserkers were called.
- “So I could drink my brother’s blood”: this line lets on that the protagonist’s stepmother was pregnant. This is yet another element coming from Scandinavian folklore. According to it, the only way for a werewolf to heal from his - werewolves were usually males - condition was to kill a pregnant woman and eat the fetus she carried. The original ballad clearly extended this creed to humans-turned-wolves, though they are not technically werewolves.
This second element was cut entirely from the shorter Eurovision version that Gåte will bring to Eurovision 2024: youtu.be/23D3Xxjew6E

No transcription in runes because the song is in Norwegian, so any transcription in runes just wouldn’t make sense.

The songs were not, afaik, given an official title in European Spanish.

A couple of notes:
0:27 – here she’s very clearly not singing “más” at the end of the line. Some suggested she might be saying “mal” (“bad, badly, wrongly”), making the line go “You wouldn’t need do it wrong”… which does not make much sense to me. Some others even suggested the initial “no” actually sounds like a “lo”, thus becoming “You’d have to do it wrong”. Which somehow makes even less sense than before. Thus I elected to pretend Marta just mispronounced that “más”, cutting or mispronouncing the final S, maybe because of the gasp that follows right after. Just be aware of this issue, and know these are the suggested alternatives.
1:09 – I really like this passage, because while “ojo por ojo” is the Spanish equivalent of “an eye for an eye”, the whole line “ojo por ojo, van a pagar” can also be interpreted as “they’ll pay eye by eye”, as in “they’ll pay eye for an eye, and they’ll pay every last one of them”. I’m not sure if this shade of meaning was intended, but it sure sounds precious, imo.

Unlike the rest of the songs from the original movie, the European lyrics were used in the Canadian dub too (though only Eric’s dubber was the same in both versions).

*literally “who makes the day rainy or sunny”: it’s an idiom that indicates someone who “calls the shots”, who decides how nice or nasty everyone’s day is gonna turn out.

Dear folks, I think you’ve snooped quite enough into adaptations in other languages, and it shows. These lyrics might look close to the original lyrics on the surface, but, excuse my French, they sound ugly as fuck in Italian.
If you keep stressing lyricists so they remain “faithful” to the original, the results will be stuff that looks close to the original when back-translated, but is in fact awfully worded. This has gone on long enough. Stop poking your nose in things you’re not competent in (because it SHOWS that you’re basing your opinions on translations, not on the lyrics in their actual language) and let lyricists do their job. You know your job, they know theirs. Let everyone stick to what they’re good at. Thank you.
