California Connected THE STATE OF JEFFERSON Yreka iCandy TV Vintage 2025-08-11 | I traveled to Yreka, California with my video camera in 2002 where I shot and produced this segment about the legendary "State of Jefferson" This was for a wonderful program called "California Connected" produced at the time at Los Angeles infamous PBS station, KCET, the same place that the Huell Howser shows came out of. The "State of Jefferson" is so named because it is a proposed new state composed of counties in southern Oregon and northern California, and it is named after Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. President. The name is a reference to his writings on the social contract between government and the governed, which the movement believes has been broken by the existing state governments. The idea, as it exists today, was revived in the 1940s by a mayor of Port Orford, Oregon, who, with the help of a San Francisco reporter, sought to create a new state.

He was shredding an incredibly gnarly run down Peak 8 with this toe-side carve and he caught wicked air off the pipe. All of a sudden he flames out in this amaaaazing wipe -- and when he comes up, the board's trashed and his Sorrel is buried and he's hiking to the shred shed. And I'm, like, 'Totally awesome!' "

The two Bills have passed but the theater remains!Old Town Music Hall began in the 1960's when two musicians, Bill Coffman and Bill Field, purchased the Mighty Wurlitzer Theater Pipe Organ from the Fox West Theater in Long Beach, CA, and installed it in the quaint 188-seat El Segundo State Theater, originally built in 1921.©2000 by Mark McLaughlinThe Old Town Music Hall – located in El Segundo. Bill Coffman and Bill Fields operate this movie theater, which presents vintage films every weekend. But the centerpiece of entertainment is the 1925 “Mighty Wurlitzer” which sits center stage. Bill Coffman turns to the massive console before every screening to play music from the same era as the soon to be seen film.The Wurlitzer is loud- designed for the vintage movie palaces, which could seat 2,000 people; it now plays in a small room with around 150 seats. The curtains behind the organ peel back as Coffman plays to reveal the rattling animation of organ innards. Every pipe, drum, bell and horn is painted in day-glo colors, illuminated by black light. On the screen, the words to the songs appear on projected glass slides for an old-fashioned sing along.
