Thanks to the SharkSafe Barrier campaign supporters, we are in full spin with the engineering tests to anchor the SharkSAfe Barrier on deep sand!!! We went out yesterday to check on the Units. One was deployed on the 1 of September and the other one on the 28 of September.
Surviving anchored in deep sand for 8 and 4 weeks, these Units are giving us a chance to study the bio fouling!!!
Marine organisms love to grow on new surfaces and, besides the work on the deep sand anchors and the shallow water designs, we are now also getting a chance to look into the bio-fouling process and speed which is unique for each beach.

Every day shark nets and drumlines around the world are deployed to reduce the population of sharks, to reduce the chances of encounter with swimmers and surfers. This also causes the death of non-target species such as dolphins, turtles and whales.
The Sharksafe Barrier IS DIFFERENT! It works by bio-mimicing the visual effects of a kelp forest and this, combined with magnetic stimuli, to successfully deter sharks from entering a Sharksafe Barrier protected area. Here are some photos of the white sharks kept away from a food source (e.g. a bucket of fish) by the Sharksafe Barrier. In all the scientific tests we never had a white shark entering the protected area.
In January 2019 we exported the Sharksafe Barrier to Reunion island for the local researchers of CRA (Shark Risk Managment Centre, Réunion), to run the same tests with their sharks. Since then the Sharksafe Barrier is still going strong, it shows some bio-fouling on the Units and became a much appreciated reef by the local fauna!
Are you ready to make a difference and join us in our mission?
To install and test the Sharksafe Barrier also in deep sand sea substrates we need to raise the fund to rent boats, buy the equipment for the barriers, pay commercial divers and monitor the results.
Our oceans are under many threats but this is a project where your money can directly help saving both human and marine lives at the same time!!!
PLEASE SUPPORT AND SHARE! Together we can really make a difference and replace the shark nets and drumlines, worldwide, with a proven and eco-friendly solution that keeps sharks safely separated from swimmers and surfers.

We have been working for years on a eco-friendly alternative to protect people from sharks and stop the unjustifiable cull of marine life by shark nets and drumlines. The tests with white sharks and bull sharks proving that the Sharksafe Barrier effectively excludes sharks, even from a food source, were all published on peer reviewed scientific journals.
The robustness of the Sharksafe Barrier units were tested in the harshest conditions of the South African coast. We completed the very first oversea installation in Reunion Island in January 2019 (in collaboration with CRA, Shark Risk Managment Centre, Réunion) and we cannot wait to stop shark-culling for good.

The SharkSafe Barrier exclusion test in St Paul (Reunion) was a collaboration between SharkSafe Barrier Pty Ltd and CRA (Shark Risk Management Centre, Reunion). The installation was completed on the 4 of February 2019. 18 weeks later the SharkSafe Barrier became a good refuge for local fishes. Let us know in the comments what do you think about SharkSafe Barrier!

Extremely interested in every moves of the divers, this cool lionfish followed the underwater work really closely, for the entire duration of the installation.

By deploying Sharksafe around a 13 m × 13 m square exclusion zone, this study aimed to test the exclusion capabilities of the Sharksafe Barrier on white sharks.
After 34 trials and approximately 255 hours of total video collected over two years, data illustrate that all interacting C. carcharias were successfully excluded from the baited Sharksafe Barrier region

The technology consists of merging visual and a magnetic shark specific deterrents for keeping large sharks separated from swimmers and surfers.
The alternatives to Sharksafe are either designed to protect individual surfers rather than the whole beach (i.e. shark-pod), or, if protecting the beach, they are not eco-friendly (shark nets and drumlines) or not shark specific (eco-barrier and exclusion net) and require high maintenance.
