For as much as I enjoy SRB2, I will be the first to admit that its controls, at least with the default ones that come when playing on a controller are not ideal... or even good. My enjoyment of SRB2 came after messing about with the controls, because goddamn is the options menu for the controls confusing at first.So no, I have nothing against the SRB2 naysayers, I made this video as a joke but also as a showcase that SRB2 can be an enjoyable platforming experience once you figure out the controls. Ever since I tried the first demo of Victory Heat Rally back in SAGE 2020, I knew then and there this racing game was going to be something special. Ever since I've been following the game on their Twitter page and besides the occasional game development update progress, the Victory Heat Rally page retweeted a lot of real life rally clips, both new and old, then I knew for sure the developer Skydevilpalm was passionate about rallying and racing as a whole.Fast forward to today and VHR is finally out. Was it worth the wait? IMHO, yes, I think it was. I am aware, this is an indie racing game going for "retro" aesthetic similar to Power Drift (and Outrun), and it surely will never get even 10% of the buzz a new Need for Speed, Forza (Horizon) or Test Drive Unlimited game (or 1% if by any chance Sony ports Gran Turismo 7 to PC), but for less than 20 dollars, it is a really fun arcade racer, with tons of charm, personality, cute pixel girls, bopping soundtrack and passion.And in today's market when it comes to racing games, I couldn't ask for more. That said, Parking Garage Rally Circuit is a really short game, we're talking 8 tracks across 3 different vehicle classes. Then again, for 7,50 dollars, I'd say it's worth it, especially since the driving mechanics are solid, the tracks are very creative and just the whole game is full of replayability and personality.I only showcase 5 of the 8 tracks with the Light and Heavy vehicle classes as to not spoil the whole game, since I want to convince others to try this game themselves. There is also Endurance mode, which is basically racing alone on the tracks until the timer hits 0, Outrun style.And lastly, this game has some cheat codes. Basically a reinterpretation of Sonic Battle as 2D fighting game with a lot more depth to it.I'm hardly a fighting game expert, but I tried my best labbing both Knuckles and Rouge, showcasing combos, playstyles, mixups, etc. As for the fighting mechanics themselves I think they're solid. Only con I have is that jump-in attacks/normals barely have any hitstun when initiating a combo, meaning you're basically gonna get reversal'd 90% of the time.Opinions on the new characters:- Knuckles: straight forward, heavy hitting combos that are surprisingly easy to execute, with decent mobility options and feints to bait you into a counter, as well as a disgusting unblockable air grab if tiger-kneed from ground after an uppercut. Not only that, but audio and animation fixes, remade cutscenes and other quality of life improvements.This is common knowledge by now that Sonic Colors Ultimate is anything but ultimate, in fact it's a pretty bad remaster of an otherwise good Sonic game. It's not the worst game remaster/remake I've ever seen... thankfully... but it's pretty high up there, to the point I'd urge people to not even bother getting this game on PC and just emulate the original Wii version via Dolphin.Now with Project Re-Rainbow here I can actually condone buying the Sonic Colors Ultimate on PC. Then I started playing it and was pretty shocked to see it controls good... like really really good, for a fact better than Sonic Unleashed (despite being based off of it) and Generations. And best of all actual rolling-physics, despite the fact that one could argue... are completely pointless in a boost style Sonic game. Me personally, I welcome them.Even better, despite this demo being only one level and a boss fight, I replayed the level at least 20 or so times just to get that S rank... it's not easy to get at all, but I persevered, just because of how fun Sonic is to control, despite the level itself, Frostfall, being a typical boost Sonic stage. This is the Sonic Frontiers Cyberspace 1-2 effect all over again...That said, Sonic Velocity is faaaar from perfect. It can get buggy as all heck, especially in 2D sections, jumping from an upward incline slanted a bit too high has a 50/50 chance of just cancelling your jump altogether, coupled with questionable collision detection. And the Egg Seal boss fight, while impressive is subject to RNG based on how quickly you can beat it (also that surprise, untelegraphed laser attack feels cheap).But what really caught me off guard was the ingame cinematic cutscenes. Like I didn't expect them here and they're genuinely well animated. If you're gonna argue about Sonic Omens doing this first, the cutscenes there where prerendered. On one hand, the artistic part of me thinks "Oh cool. Dreamlike, non-euclidean Sonic levels, that's neat", while the cynical part of me thinks "Oh, they just slapped random assets and enemies about and called it a day.". I know it's mean spirited to think that, especially since this an amateur project, but still, I won't blame anyone else if they think the same.That said, I'm not sure if how this Sonic fangame has these kinds of levels was because of concessions of how busted the Sonic Infinity Engine framework is, or they just really wanted a Sonic fangame where you get to feel like you're flying (and are not Tails) and picked said framework because of it.Weird rambling in the description aside, I do think Sonic Skyfall is fun, if you look at it as just an unconventional Sonic fangame and nothing more, though the flying through the levels gets old when all you need is a button press and nothing more, but that's more on the quality of Sonic Infinity Engine, than the fangame itself. Compared to the SAGE 2021 Demo (it's been that long, yikes), this one has seen a noticeable improvement, both polish wise, as well as presentation and quality of life improvements.Despite it featuring just one stage, Leaf Forest, the mechanics and the level design are meaty enough to offer replayability. Just like in Sonic Rush, doing tricks and keeping the boost meter high is the name of the game, as well as multiple ways to approach certain sections and player expression. I never played Sonic And The Secret Rings, I mostly heard unfavorable reviews about it and seeing that most of the complaints stem from being a Wii game using forced Wiimote gimmick controls... I passed on it. Even still, I do enjoy the aesthetic of Secret Rings and anything Oriental inspired is a weakness of mine (big Prince of Persia fan here lol).So lo and behold, a passionate Sonic fan remade the whole game... from the ground up... without the forced motion controls. And honestly, it feels great. Yeah, it's still an on-rails Sonic game, but it's still fun... for once you still need to use the analog stick more than in Sonic Forces and it feels more satisfying to actually ace the stages than Forces...I don't have any prior experience with the OG Sonic And The Secret Rings, so my opinions here in the description are kinda biased, but Project Reignition is genuinely impressive. And this Shadow mod is really cool, both from the spritework and moveset. Well, it's back with a Kickstarter campaign alongside being published under the banner of Curiomatic. But what does it have to do with Sonic fangames?Remember Sonic GT, a really innovative 3D Sonic fangame with a heavy emphasis on momentum and rolling physics, you know the stuff more skeptical Sonic fans have been clamoring for so long? Well, Rollin' Rascal is made by the same devs. And the influences of Sonic GT really show in this demo.Rollin' Rascal feels literally made for Sonic Adventure fans, even more so than Spark The Electric Jester 3 (I'm sorry, but I have to make some comparisons). The game, at least in the demo, feels specifically built with the physics and heavy use of momentum in mind, as well as a lot of interactive level elements, all for you to master and keep a flow state of high speed platforming and mechanical mastery, something Sonic games have been trying to accomplish for years, with varrying degrees of success.That said, the demo isn't flawless. Levels for all their openness still feel a bit confusing (especially the multiplayer ones) for first time play, as well as some unintentional camera issues that can really ruin your run once you get rolling. This is still a demo so these issues might be ironed out in the meantime. That said, I think the multiplayer levels are the highlight as these put an even greater emphasis on momentum usage and mechanical mastery and really sells the vision the guys at Curiomatic have for this game.I'm curious how they handle later levels and difficulty progression in the full game, as well as what other levels themes and obstacles they have in store. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown - Menolias Boss Fight (Hero Difficulty) Marius「Urucu」 2024-01-20 | Really enjoyed Menolias boss fight, probably my favorite so far.Technically it's Custom Difficulty, all values are at the default Hero Difficulty (1.5 enemy and environment damage, normal parry window, Athra depletation on Fast), except enemy HP is set to 1.5 instead of the usual 1.0, to keep the fights longer while also not being terribly frustrating. For what it is, S3 Sonic is the closest you'll get to true classic Sonic physics in Sonic Robo Blast 2. You have no thok, but you have faster acceleration, a higher jump (almost double compared to vanilla SRB2 Sonic) and the insta-shield, as well as shield abilities. Not to mention, running downhill actually increases your speed, as well as running into speedboosters gives you speed instead of being forced to roll. But you have some downsides to make it balanced, like jumps being less floaty and the lack of a thok makes you commit to your jumps.S3 Sonic is in some ways harder to play as than regular Sonic, even compared to Amy (she stops much easier and generally has better air control, not to mention hammer shenanigans), but also a more pure gameplay experience, since the removal of the thok actually forces you to engage more with the level design and not cheese it via thok spam.I chose Angel Island Tour level pack because despite the linearity, they have awesome setpieces and really test your knowledge of SRB2's movement and your movement skills in general. Sonic Overture 95 Is Beautifully Surreal - 2023 Demo Playthrough - Sonic Fangame Showcase Marius「Urucu」 2023-12-24 | Sonic Overture 95 Demo by Team Overture:sonic-overture-team.itch.io/sonic-overture-2023-demoI'd write a detailed summary on the gameplay and level design, but at this point I'm just mesmerized by the artstyle and the surreal aesthetic of it. Levels are beautifully detailed with lots of 3D effects, I didn't think a classic Sonic fangame would make my jaw drop but it can still happen.As far as gameplay goes, you don't get the drop dash (which to me at this point is a force of habbit to expect it in a 2D Sonic fangame), but you still have the regular spindash and no roll lock. You can download it from the link below:gamebanana.com/mods/485051As the resident no. 1 Sonic Forces hater, Sonic Forces Overclocked is beyond impressive, to the point where you ask yourself, why did they put so much effort in it to begin with... I mean besides level design revamps, you got fully voiced acted cutscenes, new soundtrack, hand drawn art, a new story line, new setpieces, new gimmicks... why is everything so good? Then I'm reminded that beneath all the delicious crust and seasoning, the core that is Sonic Forces gameplay and controls is moldy as heck, because it still controls IMHO like utter garbage.That said, the Overclocked Team still managed to make this all work, despite this damning handicap. The controls haven't been revamped... at least as far as I'm aware... but the levels were designed around Sonic's and Avatar's wonky controls. The level design is pretty ingenious at points with quite a number of branching paths and really cool setpieces which vanilla Sonic Forces was sorely lacking. And best of all, no classic Sonic in sight... if Modern Sonic controlled like garbage, classic Sonic in Forces controls like malaria... that alone bumps the score up by quite a lot.Anyway, Sonic Forces Overclocked is a really well made mod, probably one of the most impressive Sonic mods to date. I am a big racing game fan (mostly of the arcade variety, but I do dabble into simcade and even simulation games, despite not owning a proper sim rig), but despite my enjoyment for racing games, the genre has been rather stagnating. Besides your Mario Kart, Need for Speed and maybe sometimes Forza Horizon (and I am really generous when I describe this one an arcade racer), it seems like the general gaming landscape barely appreciates racing games unless they're full on simulation, because arcade racers are for babies apparently. Yeah, I blame tryhard sweats that own a sim rig more expensive than their car for the death of arcade racers in the 2020s... what you gonna do about it?Unexpected (and unneeded) rant aside, Victory Heat Rally is genuinely a fun time that evokes nostalgia for games like Outrun and Power Drift by its artstyle with the more modern handling and control of something like Daytona and SEGA Rally, it's genuinely really fun to just speed ahead and chain drift to your hearts content, provided you can handle it, as well as shaving any millisecond you can on your lap times. I especially love the style and handling of VHR, easy to get into, hard to master. Me neither.All I know it's that it was awful to play and even awful to look at or at least, eerily uncanny. This is the "experimental transition to 3D graphics" phase of Sonic (even though this was released on the Game Gear). That said, I commend the creator for taking said uncanny artstyle, flipping it on its head and making it actually nostalgic and dare I say 𝒜𝐸𝒮𝒯𝐻𝐸𝒯𝐼𝒞. I genuinely wanna play a Sonic game like this.As for gameplay, it's serviceable, although I am a bit puzzled by the double jump immediately transitioning to a drop dash (regardless if you hold the jump button or not) and the shield removing both your double jump and drop dash at the same time. You like action games, then boy do I have the game for you. Being in development since 2021, I've been following Advent Neon and its creator, CryoGX, closely and every time I see more gameplay footage, I am more and more hyped. This is a really good action game that knows what it wants to be.There aren't many differences in level design compared to the previous demos, but the movement and animations have been upgraded/revamped. Your combat moves especially function a bit differently than last time and I say for the better. It seems a bit unweildly at first, but it will come on natural once you get used to it.
