It follows a robot called Sonny, who through the story, evolves to comprehend emotions. The story starts as Sonny is sent to an abandoned Melbourne to find his dying owner's long-lost son. Ending up in a restaurant, he discovers the remnants of a birthday party. After experiencing a flashback, Sonny takes a memento and returns to the ship. After informing his owner on what happened, they sit in silence in his owner's final moments.Of Silk and Sawdust is a five minute live-action, animated short film. SAE Melbourne | Still | Film, Audio & Music SAE University College Aus 2025-06-18 | Unit: Major Project Production - Still is a sophisticated and cross collaborative short film, involving students from Film, Audio and Music courses at SAE Melbourne.Synopsis: An anxious immigrant who lives in isolation, surrounded by digital overstimulation, embarks on a street photography competition in the city. While things start to hold him back from capturing good photos, he is also confronted by one of his most interesting subjects. Post-covid, entire subsets of generations are presented with a new, digital anxiety. The aether between spacetime has narrowed drastically. For younger generations, especially in economically-developed Asian countries, this manifests in constant self-doubt, where one’s own thoughts are tailored by discordant online algorithms. Still' explores this through the perspective of an Asian immigrant living in Australia with social anxiety, who has established a ‘safe zone’ during lockdown isolation, but hasn’t moved on with the rest of the world. As the antithesis, the film uncovers his longing for the tactility and warm nature of analog film and the importance of presence in pursuing passion, and physical human connection, which I believe is essential for our psyche into the future.
