Hong Kong — Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade 2025【4K HDR】 Virtual Tours TV 2025-06-04 | Celebrate Dragon Boat Festival at Hong Kong's Tai O Fishing Village and watch the annual water parade! 🇭🇰 The Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade is an important traditional festival in Tai O with a history of over 100 years. It is said that Tai O was hit by a severe plague a century ago, with many villagers being infected and killed. To drive away the epidemic, villagers paraded statues of gods on dragon boats, sailing around the water village's canals and brought an end to the plague. This tradition has been maintained up to this date. On the morning of the festival, members of three fisherman's associations from Tai O, namely Pa Teng Hong, Sin Yu Hong and Hop Sum Tong, visit four temples to pick up the statues of the gods. The statues are then put on sacred sampans towed by the associations’ dragon boats to parade through Tai O’s canals. This ritual is now on the list of Hong Kong's Intangible Cultural Heritage. Visit the former City of Darkness, a lawless enclave known for its unregulated development, anarchic nature and organised crimes from the 1950s to early 1990s.Kowloon Walled City was originally a garrison town constructed by the Qing Dynasty in 1847 to strengthen coastal defence in the region. Following The Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory of 1898, it became a Chinese enclave within British Hong Kong till the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1911. Qing's successor, the Nationalist Chinese government, continued to make claims on Kowloon Walled City until the start of WWII, when the Japanese occupying government demolished the city's fortifications. With no government enforcement from either the British or the Chinese since the end of WWII, Kowloon Walled City became the hotspot for crime and other illegal activities, and it was run by local triad groups. The city became very densely populated as there were no regulations on building proximities, with 50,000 people packed into 0.26 square kilometres of land. In 1987, it was decided by the British and the Chinese government that Kowloon Walled City had to be demolished, and the demolition concluded in 1994. The area where the walled city once stood now became Kowloon Walled City Park, inspired by the style of traditional gardens in Southern China.
