How to Implement Beta Reader Feedback & When is Your Book Ready for Querying | WRITING VLOG Jackie Reads and Writes 2024-09-22 | It’s time for another writing vlog! In today’s video, we’re going to talk about how to implement feedback from beta readers, how to know you’re ready for querying (spoiler alert: you don’t), and why no literary agent is better than a bad literary agent. My historical mystery manuscript, nicknamed “Project Dagger,” has been through two rounds of beta readers. I’ve had a lot of feedback, including some that’s conflicting, so I’ve been working through it and thinking about what I want to do. I have been working on this manuscript on and off for a year, so I will probably try my luck at querying literary agents soon. Seeing as I already queried one book and (seemingly) failed to find an agent, I do have a lot of anxiety about doing this all again. I think ultimately it’s important to remember that getting an agent or not doesn’t determine you or your story’s worth. Also please remember that: NO AGENT IS BETTER THAN A BAD AGENT! I’ve seen a lot of people on YouTube and Twitter signing with agencies who have no sales history, no connections, and no experience. Many people begin the querying process with misconceptions or flawed attitudes about how it works. What is the truth about querying and traditional publishing? It's this: that this is a BUSINESS. At the end of the day, literary agents have a finite amount of time, and they are looking to support themselves. This means that you may receive generic rejections or no responses. Many authors also have a frankly entitled attitude, believing they are above reproach and refusing to accept that anyone might reject them.
