#54 Reach | The Pearl Technique Collaboration with Sara Taylor – Translucent & Grey Base Challenge @MCSARTDESIGNS

MCS ART DESIGNS ✨ About This Piece:
Welcome to my first-ever collaboration — and what an inspiring experience it was! This piece, titled “Reach,” was created for the Pearl Technique Collaboration hosted by the amazing Sara Taylor.

The challenge was to use either a translucent or multicolored base coat and to include Magenta and Payne’s Grey in our color combos. For my piece, I went with a split base — one side featuring a translucent base coat, and the other a custom grey mix made from recycled paint scraped and strained from previous pours (nothing goes to waste here!).

As soon as the paint started to flow, I could see the grey base coming alive, forming those signature pearls and creating an incredible contrast that almost overtook the colors. I fought to maintain balance and ended up with a composition that truly spoke to me — a peak of color “reaching” upward through the greys.

“Reach” represents both the visual motion of the piece and my personal journey — pushing past fear, opening up, and connecting with this beautiful art community. I was nervous to collaborate for the first time, but I’m so proud of how it turned out and grateful to have done it alongside the talented Sara Taylor, who constantly inspires me and so many others.

Welcome to my first-ever collaboration — and what an inspiring experience it was! This piece, titled “Reach,” was created for the Pearl Technique Collaboration hosted by the amazing Sara Taylor.

💫 Supplies Used & Mixing Recipe & Instructions
🎨 Base Coat
Color: Tricorn Black
Brand: Sherwin Williams (Color To Go)
🎨 Colors Used
Powder Pigments
Aquamarine (Interference) TLP Fluid Art Co.
Sky Blue ColourArte
Groovy TLP Fluid Art Co.
Blue Eyes TLP Fluid Art Co.
Bolivian Blue ColourArte
Mixing Instructions:
Place 5-10 ml of JoSonja in your container 1st, then add 15 mills of powder pigment and mix well. Once all the pigment is wet and dispersed, you can add 15-25 ml of your untinted Paint (I use Behr 8300)
Mix well until you get the consistency you want.
Acrylic paints
Mixture Phalo Blue & Quin Magenta to make a deep purple Matisse
Mixing Instructions:
5 ml of paint and 20 ml of untinted paint (Behr 8300)
🎨 Cell Activator
Powder Pigments:
Aquamarine (Interference) TLP Fluid Art Co
Mixing Instructions:
Add 5-10 ml of Minwax Wood Conditioner (water based) then 15 ml of powder pigment. Mix well until all powder is wet and dispersed. If you need to add a little more Minwax to disperse the pigments its ok. Add 30 ml of Australian Floetrol. Mix well again to make sure all products are combined.
Acrylic Paint:
Oxide Black by Amsterdam
Mixing instructions:
30 ml of Australian Floetrol
15 ml of Paint
I used a variety of shapes and sized of palette knifes to swipe the cell activator but you can different tools for this if you want. I also used a handheld blower that I got from Temu. They have all types of these blowers so try and look for one that has different detachable heads and offers various speeds. Here is the one I got, 130000RPM Violent Turbofan. I dont know if they have this available anymore but search for one with the specs above.

MCS ART DESIGNS 2026-01-30 | In this tutorial, I’m sharing how I created a bloom pour using a cell activator made with powder pigment instead of pre-made acrylic paint.

This technique is not about being better than traditional methods, but about exploring a different way to create cells using powder pigment and understanding how it behaves compared to acrylic paint.

Whether you’re new to bloom pours or experimenting with alternative materials, I hope this tutorial gives you ideas you can apply to your own artwork.

💫 Supplies Used
Base Paint:
Tricorn Black by Sherwin Williams Color To Go (House Paint)
Cell Activators:
Black - Oxide Black Amsterdam
Mixed 2 parts Australian Floetrol to 1 Part Paint
Aquamarine Iridescent - 1 teaspoon of pigment to 2 teaspoons of MinWax wood conditioner to wet/disperse the pigment the 2 tablespoons of Australian floetrol. (I only mixed a little bit to see if it worked.)
Colors:
Rose Quartz (powder-pigment) TLP - Fluid Art Co.
Bolivian Blue (powder-pigment) ColourArte
Sangria (powder-pigment) TLP - Fluid Art Co.
Quinacridone Magenta (acrylic paint) TriArt
Waterfall - (powder-pigment) TLP - Fluid Art Co.
Blue Eyes (powder-pigment) TLP - Fluid Art Co.
All Powder pigments are mixed as follows:
Tablespoon of pigment to 1 teaspoon of JoSonja to (disperse the pigment) to 2-3 Tablespoons of Behr 8300 untinted Base C
Tube or bottled acrylic paint:
1 Tablespoon of paint to 2-3 tablespoons of Behr 8300 untinted Base C sometimes I add JoSonja or water if its too thick.
The new blowing tool is something I found online at Temu. They have so many types. You want one that has adjustable air flow and one that comes with detachable nozzles. This is the one I got:

How I mix my paints:
Powder pigments:

Cell Activator:
1 tablespoon of paint to 2 tablespoons of Australian Floetrol
Tips that work for me:
You want to make sure all your colors are the same consistency before applying them to the base.
Australian Floetrol & using Amsterdam paint are the best for getting cells, however, there are other brands that will achieve cells. This is what works best for me.
Always make sure you spin/tilt enough paint off the canvas so you don't end up with the piece cracking. If the paint is to thick it will begin to crack when it dries. That is why i spread out my base paint before applying my colors.

Welcome back to MC Art Designs! Today, I’m walking you through one of my favorite SheleeArt-inspired fluid painting techniques — a pour, swipe, and spin that creates a bold explosion of color and incredible cells.

We’ll start with a base coat of Sherwin Williams “Anchors Aweigh”, then layer our colors step-by-step before using two magical cell activators:

MCS ART DESIGNS 2025-08-20 | This is a 15.5 inch round cradled board that has been painted using SheleeArt Swipe technique. I used 4 colors and they are all listed in the video in order they were layed down. This piece was so much fun to paint and the end results look like a space painting with galaxy and nebula colors that shift depending on the lighting.

This one turned out so awesome. In this video, I’ll show you how I created this beautiful abstract pearl cell painting using satin enamel paint as a translucent base coat — without adding any color! 🎨

To create this piece, I first painted the canvas with an acrylic water wash to ensure the entire surface had color even after the translucent top layer dried. This process produces a subtle, luminous depth that lets the pearl cells shine through the layers beautifully.

💡 Tip: The key to achieving smooth, even cells is making sure all of your colors are the same consistency as your base coat.

One of the biggest challenges in fluid painting is knowing where your paint — and your swipes — will end up once the canvas starts to move. It’s a delicate balance between how much paint you lay down and how you guide it. Too much paint can cause cracks and warping, while too little limits your cell formation and color flow.

#47 Color Shifting Black Shark Process Video-Amazing color shifting #fluidart

MCS ART DESIGNS 2025-07-31 | This video shows my process of creating this amazing looking color shifting shark on mdf cutout 22" long. I used 3 colors on a black base and the results are amazing. I mix most of my paints using the Shelee Bloom recipe. She does offer a course if interested. I listed a link to her website if you want to find out more about the courses she offers.

The actual shark was cut out of mdf wood and has a hanging kit on the back so it can be hung up on any wall. It’s approximately 24 inches long with a width of 12 inches from top fin to bottom fin. I have several cutouts left that I will be experimenting on with different colors and media. #44 3 x 4 foot SheleeArt Swipe acrylic pour

MCS ART DESIGNS 2021-03-05 | This piece is a total of 3 feet by 4 feet. I cut out a couple of slits and painted away. I only used a few colors and navigated from one piece to the next. Process is speed up as it took over 1.5 hours to do the entire piece. I used acrylic paint with pouring mediums consistent with SheleeArt's recipe. Hope you enjoy.

In this video, I’m creating “Comet Explosion,” a vibrant 24" round fluid art painting that captures the energy and movement of a galactic sky. 🌠

The base is a deep black background, swiped across with shimmering metallics and rich color-shifting pigments to create a cosmic explosion effect — glowing cells and lacing that look like they’re alive with light and motion.

Each swipe reveals a burst of depth and color, producing an out-of-this-world, galaxy-inspired pour that has become one of my most popular creations.
