🌳Woodturning | Criss Cross Pen Pot | Milliput Filled Cross Spiral Fluted Pen Pot | Router Lathe William Hunt 2019-10-26 | My third outing with my old Router Lathe.I managed to acquire an old 1980’s Router Lathe from my father's workshop. It needed some TLC, a new handle (missing) and also some repairs to a pulley which was heavily cracked. You can still obtain spare parts for this machine on eBay but the range is limited and handles and pulleys are not available of course!For my third project, I revisited the "fishnet" pattern having read the instructions this time.I have got a lot of nicely spalted beech which I used for the base material.You can reverse the drive on the router lathe thus enabling the pattern I sought. Who would have guessed reading the instructions?The Sears Roebuck Router Crafter looks exactly the same in design as the Trend Router Lathe so I'm suspicious all the parts are interchangeable as its probably the same machine. There is not much in the way of help for the router lathe on Youtube.I found parts catalogues and instructions for both versions of the equipment online but they read like a 1950’s machine instruction manual. I gave up as the equipment isn’t that complicated, and therefore its use is fairly intuitive. 🌳Woodturning | Hollow form in Blue & Gold | Green Sycamore William Hunt 2019-10-18 | I acquired the useful parts of an entire Sycamore tree (Acer pseudoplatanus) from my firewood supplier, which is a good way of purchasing timber in bulk. I pay firewood prices but have to process it myself losing up to 66% of the wood in process, but that will go to the log burner next winter, so little actual waste.I dried this project in a microwave from 28% to 8%. 🌳Woodturning | Twisted Sister | Milliput Filled Spiral Fluted Pot | Router Lathe Crafter William Hunt 2019-10-13 | My second outing with my old Router Lathe.I managed to acquire an old 1980’s Router Lathe from my father's workshop. 🌳Woodturning | Oak Drinks Tray | Oak Platter William Hunt 2019-10-05 | I wanted to add something personal to a friend's birthday present of a bottle of fine amber spirit. A couple of years ago I purchased a job lot of scrap timber originating form an English castle that was a legacy of renovation work done some 240 years ago, In amongst the scraps of woof was a nice piece of crotch oak.The timber exhibited some season cracking in the crotch that I filled with epoxy resin laced with gold mica powder. The technique has found its way into the West as an art, and even into woodturning.In this second Shou Sugi Ban/Yakasugi video I try a couple of different approaches and further explore the technique of turning a charred Cypress vase. I largely followed Pat Carroll’s excellent tutorial in the August Issue of Woodturner Magazine.Previously, the most significant issue was the wood cracking during the charring process. I suspect it's in the nature of this softwood. 🌳Woodturning | Big Contemporary Bowl in Spalted beech William Hunt 2019-08-23 | The tree that provided the wood from this project was a storm casualty from a fews ago in the village of Hinston St George. I acquired the bole of the tree in 2016 and milled it in 2017 to yield a significant amount of perfectly spalted timber.Spalting is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi. Although primarily found in dead trees, spalting can also occur in living trees under stress. Although spalting can cause weight loss and strength loss in the wood, the unique coloration and patterns of spalted wood are sought by woodworkers.Spalting is divided into three main types: pigmentation, white rot, and zone lines. Spalted wood may exhibit one or all of these types in varying degrees. Both hardwoods (deciduous) and softwoods (coniferous) can spalt, but zone lines and white rot are more commonly found on hardwoods due to enzymatic differences in white rotting fungi. 🌳Woodturning | Brunei Spinning Top/ Gasing Top | Gasing Pangkah | Malaysian Spinning Top William Hunt 2019-08-16 | Having been seconded to the Royal Brunei Armed Forces many years ago I encountered the sport of “gasing”, which involves teams battling with spinning tops.This week's YouTube video is about the crafting of a Brunei/Malaysian Spinning Top. It is claimed that the name gasing was derived from two Malay words; the “ka” from kayu (wood, which the tops are made of) and “sing” from pusing (spin), forming the word kasing. Over time eventually the name gasing was used. In Brunei, there are many types of wood. A popular wood that is easy to find is the gasing ambuk. The Top is spun by the experienced just using one hand. In Brunei, here are also a number of wood which can be used as spinning tops. These include buah berangan, biji membangan, buah nyirei and buah pitabu. An up-market Spinning Top will have a handle on the rope and a crude finial on the crown. I'm not sure if the finial is there for balance or decoration.To play this game, there will typically be two teams of four players each, and it is played on a round-shaped playing surface known as the bong. The game begins when four tops from a group are spun on the playing surface and the other team members would try to strike each of these spinning tops with their own gasing. The team that has the most number of spinning tops on the bong would be declared the winner but if the equal number from each team is still spinning, then the longest spinning gasing would be named the winner. Today, gasing pelajau (Gasing Pangkah) still continues to be played by certain segments of Brunei’s ethnic communities. It continued to be played in villages near Sungai Limau Manis.Not having any of the traditional Brunei woods available, I turned to the best wood I had available, which was some kind of red cedar. CHEAP AND SIMPLE YOUTUBE STUDIO SETUP William Hunt 2019-08-09 | This video is a broad overview of how I built my Workshop Youtube Studio using cheap, off-the-shelf components. I came up with a solution for very cheap, multiple inexpensive cameras for YouTube. I used: - An old laptop, - A used 1080p wifi-enabled Digital Video Camera (DVC) - 3 ieGeek home security cameras. - OBS Studio broadcasting software.I use OBS Broadcasting software (which is free, open-source software) to capture the video clips from the 3 ieGeek cameras. This works well. I then collate all the video clips from the various camera's into the cloud (iCloud or OneDrive) to make it easy to import in my video editing software.For video editing, I use Apple's Final Cut Pro X, but this is excessive in terms of editing power for my needs. Woodturning | Huge Monkey Puzzle | Huge Norfolk Island Pine | Bowl William Hunt 2019-08-02 | 🌳A very close relative of the US Norfolk Island Pine, the Monkey Puzzle tree is an ancient pine dating back to prehistoric times.Woodturning a Monkey Puzzle bowl. Monkey puzzle is unusual as the branches grow in annular rings around the trunk of the tree, unlike the norm which is at random intervals along the trunk.Monkey Puzzle/Norfolk Pine is very soft and only attractive to turners because of the branch arrangement and sometimes some spalting. Spalted Monkey Puzzle/Norfolk pine is often blue-green and grey in colour.The pith is invariably rotted out by the time Monkey Puzzle/Norfolk Island Pine is seasoned enough to turn, so this void needs to be filled at some stage. Woodturning | Green Sycamore Forms Part 1 | Woodturning Wet Wood 6 William Hunt 2019-07-12 | I acquired the useful parts of an entire Sycamore tree (Acer pseudoplatanus) from my firewood supplier, which is a good way of purchasing timber in bulk. I pay firewood prices but have to process it myself losing up to 66% of the wood in process, but that will go to the log burner next winter, so little actual waste.I chose a log at random with the intention of wet turning - and if practicable, finishing two green/wet wood projects through artificial drying.My own method of drying woodturning in the microwave is as follows:- Set microwave to 400w- Set timer to 40 seconds- Allow 2 minutes rest time between cyclesMonitor weight loss through weighing or moisture meter until the desired level is achieved.In this case, it took 36 cycles to get the level to 8%The large Hollow Form I turned was too large for the microwave so I opted for some rice on the inside and stored it in a box of shavings which I’ll need to turn frequently to prevent mould growth. I’ll pick up on the hollow form in a few weeks in complete in a short video.The off-cut from the log ended up as an end-grain bowl which was very bland indeed in terms of features, grain and character, and therefore I turned to my set of Hampshire Sheen Intrinsic Colours for help. I opted for black, flame and honey but ended up sanding these back as the colours were too strong undiluted.After many attempts, sanding back each time I began to run out of wall thickness and had to settle for what I was left with, which was not too shabby.I’ll revisit the hollow form (in Part 2) when the moisture level drops below 10%.William Hunt woodturning ideas on YouTube. Woodturning | Wild Cherry Bowl | Grit & Sheen William Hunt 2019-07-05 | Wild Cherry, Prunus avium, it from the Rosaceae family of trees and is native to the United Kingdom (UK). Mature wild cherry trees can grow to 30m and live for up to 60 years. The shiny bark is a deep reddish-brown with prominent cream-coloured horizontal lines. The second part of its botanical name ‘avium’ refers to birds, who eat the cherries and disperse the seed. In Scotland, cherry is sometimes referred to as ‘gean’.The timber of the Wild Cherry is far more attractive than that of its domesticated cousins, which have been developed for a fast-growing and therefore are often all sapwood. Woodturning | Lilac Root Vase | Woodturning Roots William Hunt 2019-06-28 | Lilac is a member of the Olive family of trees and its shares a common feature of hardwood that has a beautiful and interesting grain. It is not often found in large pieces.A couple of years ago I acquired a lilac root from a substantial lilac tree, here from my village in Somerset. It appears to have over-dried during this short time and become quite hard but dusty. This lilac root had an unexpected amount of punky wood through the centre. This exacerbated the imbalance of the piece on the lathe that was already a a point where I could not turn it more than 560 RPM.Like woodturning all roots and rootballs, it’s a challenge to see its potential in the raw form and how it should be presented to the lathe in order to get the most out of it. In the end a large vase seemed the only possible outcome.There were some ugly voids in the pice so I decided to fill them with black Milliput epoxy resin. Im still undecided whether or not this was a good idea.I decided too much sanding on the inside was going to result in a very uneven surface so I minimised and finished it with some lacquer. 🌳Woodturning | Twisted! | Resin Filled Spiral Fluted Pot | Router Lathe Crafter William Hunt 2019-06-14 | I managed to acquire an old 1980’s Router Lathe from my father's workshop. It needed some TLC, a new handle (missing) and also some repairs to a pulley which was heavily cracked. You can still obtain spare parts for this machine on eBay but the range is limited and handles and pulleys are not available of course!I had to fabricate a hexagonal spindle or shaft for the handle using some 25mm diameter nylon using my Paul Howard Fluting Jig.I came up with the idea of some kind of a parallel walled pot with spiral, resin filled flutes. That might look cool. I've a lot of nicely spalted beech which I used for the base material. That might look cool. I might even revisit the alternative blue and gold resin fills, even cooler. The Sears Roebuck Router Crafter looks exactly the same in design as the Trend Router Lathe so I'm suspicious all the parts are interchangeable as its probably the same machine. There is not much in the way of help for the router lathe on Youtube.I found parts catalogues and instructions for both version of the equipment online but they read like a 1950’s machine instruction manual. I gave up as the equipment isn’t that complicated, and therefore its use is fairly intuitive. Most importantly only cut left to right, never the other way around.The only router I have is a Trend T4 Plunge Router which is not ideal for this task, so some improvisation was necessary to mount it properly.William Hunt woodturning ideas on YouTube. Woodturning - Raku Style Bottle with Crackle Effect Paint and Metal Reactive Paint William Hunt 2019-05-31 | I watched with amazement a short video on the Japanese pottery art of Raku on Dan Tarrent’s Wonky Workshop YouTube Channel.I turned the “bottle” from a large piece of Cypress and the sphere was achieved with the help of my Paul Howard Sphere jig.I used my Arbortech Mini Carver and my Proxxon Motorised Carver to reduce the diameter of part of the outside, giving two layers.I used crackle effect paint on part of the outside and metal reactive effect paint (rusty iron effect reactive paint) on the other part.Crackle effect how to: The Crackle effect is obtained through the overlaying of conflicting types of paint, typically this might be a spirit based paint as a base (background colour) and then spaying an acrylic based paint over the the top. The acrylic based paint will not want to adhere to the spirit based paint and pull away leaving gaps that create the “crackle effect”. The dryness of the base paint and how much paint you overlay will affect the finish. Woodturning - Hybrid Pedestal Bowl - Paul Howard Fluting Jig 16 - Resin inlay in Wood Bowl William Hunt 2019-05-24 | Following my success with the Ash Form in the colours favoured by Tutankhamun, this project is a Hybrid Pedestal Bowl in maple with gold coloured resin.Whilst Im not a fan of turning resin, I do like hybrid woodturning projects where the resin complements, rather than overshadows, the wood. A resin inlay in wood looks great!I used my Paul Howard Fluting Jig with my mains electric drill mounted to drill with precision the holes in the bowl blank and pedestal base, which I filled with Alumilite resin, coloured with gold mica powder.I've long been inspired by the numerous beautiful finds in the Tomb of King Tutankhamun, especially the death mask in that deep blue and gold, this combination of colours work very well together.This project was not the most complex I have attempted, but was very challenging. Woodturning - Ash Form Inspired by Tutankhamun. William Hunt 2019-05-17 | Having recently attended another demonstration by Mark Sanger, I wanted to try and turn some green (wet) ash, dry it colour and finish all in one day. I believe the microwave drying technique that is underused as it can save the wait whilst wood seasons and also, reduce the chance of loss due to cracking and checking, especially with timber that is highly prized yet prone to cracking such as Holly.I've long been inspired by the numerous beautiful finds in the Tomb of King Tutankhamun, especially the death mask in that deep blue and gold, this combination of colours work very well together.The microwave drying process allowed the project to be completed in one day despite the fact that the moisture content was more than 22% at the onset.I could have made a better job of the texturing, I need to investigate and acquire better tools for this. Woodturning - Rockler Bluetooth Speaker in Spalted Beech William Hunt 2019-05-09 | William Hunt woodturner describes and demonstrates his construction of a Bluetooth Speaker in Spalted Beech using a Rockler Bluetooth Speaker Kit.This homemade bluetooth speaker box works very well!"I am always doing what I cannot do yet, in order to learn how to do it."I picked up a Rockler Bluetooth Speaker kit on a trip to Yandles in Martock, thinking it would be great to combine one of these with a woodturning project.The concept I came up with was a horn shape, to represent a gramophone horn with the two components housed in the rear. “Old meets new”.For the finish I opted for an antique appearance, by building in some legacy colourful stains. I did this by adding in some Intrinsic Colours Honey and Ruby and then sanding about 95% of it off. The effect was just as I wanted!From thereon I finished the piece with Yorkshire Grit, Yorkshire Grit Microfine, then Hampshire Sheen High Gloss using the hot air gun method.The speaker works very well, having paired it with my iPhone, iPad and laptop. Woodturning - SkyBall 2 A Blue & Pearl Resin Sphere William Hunt 2019-04-26 | Resin Sphere how to. I need a sphere to demo Yorkshire Grit Microfine, which works very well indeed on epoxy resin. Therefore I decided on a resin sphere for this purpose, about 6” in diameter. I wanted a blue / white sphere to represent the sky and clouds. SkyBall 1 was a big fail as the resin turned yellow in the pressure pot.SkyBall 2 tried to get away from by flying off the lathe but I retrained it to behave better. Woodturning - Brown Oak Vessel & Hampshire Sheen Hot Wax William Hunt 2019-04-19 | "I am always doing what I cannot do yet, in order to learn how to do it."I recently acquired some of burry Brown Oak and this piece of the middle section of irregular shape.Not sure what was going to evolve I finished up with a vase-like vessel that was full of the character of the wood and its old age.Brown Oak is technically not a distinct species of oak, but rather refers to oak (almost always English Oak or another European species) that has been infected with a fungus. This fungus (Fistulina hepatica) has the effect of turning the wood a deep brown colour. William Hunt woodturner.Woodturning hot wax, Hampshire Sheen hot wax.I was demonstrating Yorkshire Grit (woodturners abrasive paste) at Yandle’s last week alongside Martin Saben Smith and his range of Hampshire Sheen finishes. I watched Martin finish a rather fetching Sycamore dish using Hampshire Sheen High Gloss and a Hot Air Gun. The technique involves the application of Hampshire Sheen High Gloss in the normal manner then melting it with a hot air gun. Thereafter its is buffed in the normal way us using a paper towel.A little more wax is needed than if conventionally applied, but one coat will achieve a very good finish. The process involves melting inflammable wax with hot air so some safety precautions be observed:1. Always use an electric hot air gun, never use a blowtorch or other instrument with a naked flame.2. Woodturning - Lidded Yew / Bur Yew Pot William Hunt 2019-04-12 | Turning a Yew Pot with a Bur Yew Lid. This project mostly developed as I went along. I had intended a lidded bowl then changed my mind as a pot seemed to fit the natural edge better. I had to blacken the natural edge of the rim as I marked it with a marker pen for the bandsaw therefore I needed to hide it. The black was too dark so had to tone it down with a wire brush.🌳 William Hunt woodturner. 🌳Finally I added a small simple, spherical knob which I also blackened and left unfinished to match the natural edge rim.Not there most unpleasant project I have ever turned but not the prettiest either. Woodturning - Easter Golden Goose Egg William Hunt 2019-04-05 | For an Easter woodturning theme I have attempted to create a mystical gold goose egg which is illuminated internally by an LED light.This was a pilot project for a much larger piece I have I’m mind for a 6” orb later in the year. I needed to find a way to create a translucent gold appearance which could be illuminated without exposing the LED.I used mica powder for this effect which worked very well with expoxy resin. Mica powder does not distribute itself evenly and leaves a swirling effect which is translucent if you get the proportions correct. It does not take much mica powder to achieve this.This Golden Easter themed goose egg worked quite well but an attempt at a novel way of epoxy resin casting didn’t work out so well. There were some defects but I left these as part of the character of the piece. The wood has some personal history with me so I wanted to turn a keepsake from it. At 9” long and 3” diameter, limited what I could do. Woodturning - Apple Hollow Form William Hunt 2019-03-22 | Woodturning apple wood. I started this apple graft union about 2 years ago and abandoned it for some forgotten reason. This the second wood turning YouTube video in the series “Finishing Unfinished Projects” by William Hunt woodturner. An apple graft union is the irregular growth that occurs of the grafting joint been the rootstock and the scion. It resembles a bur or burl but it’s not. Often, like this example the growth is bulbous and grain is random and colourful.These graft unions can be treated in two ways; you can cut them longitudinally when wet and turn then two half as separate pieces or rough turn when wet and compete when the wood is drier. I have done both with some success. Apple wood has a volumetric shrinkage rate of about 18% which means it's challenging to stop is splitting and checking. Monkey puzzle is unusual as the branches grow in annular rings around truck of then tree unlike the norm which is at random intervals along the trunk.A very close relative of the US Norfolk Pine, the Monkey Puzzle tree is an ancient pine dating back to prehistoric times.Monkey Puzzle/Norfolk Pine is very soft and only attractive to turners because of the branch arrangement and sometimes some spalting. I was lucky enough to be gifted a sizeable English Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) log from Rob Hall. The wood exhibits some spectacle spalting.Inspired by the creations of master wood artist Yuval Lavhav, we set about about turning two trinkets, one as an emerging goblet and the other an emerging hollow form.Finished with Yorkshire Grit and Hampshire Sheen, the truly amazing finish provide objective evidence how these two products work in harmony for an excellent and consistently great result. My first attempt a a detailed “how to” video.I saw a creation by Les Symonds RPT on the cover of the last Winter Issue of Woodturning magazine which inspired this project.I attempted a more rustic version using and old, cracked, dusty and wormy piece of Laburnum that was held together by some copper wire. Woodturning - A Square Bowl in English Oak William Hunt 2019-01-29 | This week two projects. The first is my version of the Hex Nut Glue Block, inspired by Mike Waldts two recent videos on the subject. I think I reinvented the faceplate, but at a cost of about £2 each.I was asked to make a Square Bowl for a birthday present. I found Al Furtado’s (The Rebel Turner) recent Youtube video in which he turned a Square Bevelled Bowl, which inspired me to try something similar.It did not go according to plan and some on-the-fly design changes were necessary! Woodturning - A Lidded Box in Apple and Oak William Hunt 2019-01-19 | Woodturning - A Lidded Apple BoxLast week I saw a lidded box on social media, YouTube or a magazine, Im not sure which. I liked the design very much and decided to have a go myself.I have some apple wood from a neighbours Bramley tree as a result of pruning three years ago and is now showing 12% moisture content. That will do nicely for the box.For the lid I found an old piece of bur English oak which is an offset from a previous project. For the “stalk, I chose an offcut from the 400 Year Old Oak projects.William Hunt woodturner.I used a glue block for the lid, which can be a bit of a challenge in cold weather as the glue can set before it adheres to the two surfaces. This potential issue can be overcome by heating both the surfaces with a glue gun before applying the glue.In the meantime, Mike Waldt takes the Glue block concept to another another level by incorporating a hex nut into the design. Woodturning - Cold Hearted Orb (Resin and Yew) William Hunt 2019-01-11 | Woodturning a resin hybrid sphere and yew stand. Cold Hearted Orb is a hybrid bur elm and resin sphere mounted on a yew wood stand. This was a recovery project in that my first attempt at a hybrid sphere did not turn out as planned and I was looking for a way to utilise it in another project.William Hunt woodturner.I drew the inspiration for this from Mike Waltd’s recent 2-part YouTube videos on an Oak Sphere and Sapele Stand. Ironically, the yew is from the same limb as Mike’s Christmas Tree project published on 18 Dec 18.lastly, I tried out some Sugru as a medium for the face of the tailstock arbor whilst completing the sphere. Sugru is a mouldable glue but cures as a firm silicone rubber. Woodturning - A Woodpecker Nesting Log/Box William Hunt 2018-12-31 | Our village is participating in the 2019 Southwest Region of the Britain in Bloom completion, after winning an award for best newcomer in 2018.I was pondering how I might incorporate some woodturning activity that would encompass the Community Participation or Conservation elements of the competition.I decided upon a nesting box for woodpeckers, since both Great Spotted and Greens are frequent visitors to my garden. Woodturning, Ebony & Ivory - Paul Howard Fluting Jig 15 William Hunt 2018-10-19 | This simple project served to get me back in the swing after a six week break away from the lathe. This Fluting/Router Jig project is 12" diameter, 2 1/2" ins deep dish that includes black and white milliput filling. Turned from Iroko. A few errors most of which were corrected. I used a 12.7mm (1/2") square router cutter which worked well for this project giving an almost equal spacing for the fluting and web in between, creating an abstract keyboard effect.Paul Howard’s Fluting Jig is an amazing addition to the woodturners tool kit and opens up all kinds of new turning opportunities.
