Aviators Lounge How a Hawker Seafury shot down a Mig 15 over North Korea.

1952 - United Nations’ forces had been fighting back a Communist invasion of South Korea for nearly two years. Amongst the various units that had been deployed to Korea was the Royal Naval aircraft carrier HMS Ocean and on board was 802 Naval Air Squadron. On the morning of the 9th of August four aircraft from 802 were tasked to reconnoitre railway lines near the city of Pyongyang. One of the pilots detailed to fly that morning was 21 year old Sub Lieutenant Brian ‘Smoo’ Ellis.

Half way through the patrol they were attacked by a flight of Mig 15s. The Mig 15 was a new jet fighter. It was developed by the Soviet Union in the late 1940’s. With swept wings and nearly 6000 pounds of thrust, it was capable of 660 mph. On paper it easily out classed the Sea Fury.

The First American Airman to die in WW2: Billy Fiske & The Battle of Britain

Aviators Lounge 2020-05-09 | Billy Fiske was the 1928 and 1932 Olympic champion bobsled driver and the first American pilot killed in action in World War II. At the time Fiske was serving in the Royal Air Force as part of 601 Squadron. He was one of 11 American pilots who flew with RAF Fighter Command between 10 July and 31 October 1940, thereby qualifying for the Battle of Britain clasp to the 1939–45 campaign star.

He was killed at RAF Tangmere after engaging a JU87 Stuka bomber.

Between his Olympic career and his military service, Fiske was instrumental in the early development of the Aspen ski resort. He and a partner built the first ski lift and lodge in the remote Colorado mountain town. Others would continue their work after the war.

Last Flight of the Spiteful - The ultimate Spitfire recovered

Aviators Lounge 2020-04-24 | On the 13 September 1944 Test Pilot Frank Furlong was killed when he lost control of the prototype aircraft he was flying. The aircraft, top secret at the time, was a development of the Spitfire the Supermarine Spiteful. No reason for the crash was officially established.

65 years later parts of the aircraft were recovered. Tony Dyer visited the WW2 Aircraft crash site to investigate.

WW2 Engine Reborn - Buried for 70 years the story of Halifax JD150

Aviators Lounge 2018-09-19 | The amazing story of a Merlin Engine buried in a bog for almost 70 years, recovered and rebuilt to run.

In 1943 a Handley Page Halifax Bomber JD150 was tasked to attack the German city of Hamburg. For some reason the aircraft strayed away from the main bomber force and was attacked by a night fighter. The Halifax caught fire and crashed into a bog. There were no survivors.

Most of the aircraft and the bodies of the crew were taken away but the four Rolls Royce Merlin XX (20) Engines were left behind. In 2009 they were recovered and taken to the Wings Museum in Sussex. Here over a period of several years one of the engines was rebuilt.

With its unique saxophone style exhaust the engine was run in memory of the crew in front of a gathering of bomber command veterans in September 2018.

Mystery Aircraft Engine Discovered - Merlin from the Deep

Aviators Lounge 2018-08-30 | Crashed aircraft discovered off the South Coast - Two pieces of a second world war bomber found in the Sea.

Sometime in the early 1980s a Rolls Royce Merlin engine was accidentally pulled from the seabed by a fisherman. It was obvious the engine had come from a crashed aircraft, but no one knew which one.

After a while it found its way to the Solent Sky Museum in Southampton, where it was put on display and left untouched. The fisherman never left his name or any information as to where it had come from. All that was known was it had been found somewhere near Southampton.

Andy Jones and the Plane Hunters team investigate. Could it be from a Spitfire, Hurricane or Avro Lancaster?

On the 15th November 1957 a Shorts Solent Flying Boat Crashed on the Isle of Wight.

The Flying Boat Crash claimed the lives of 45 people and marked the end of the flying boat era.
