Enable 480p and use the arrow icon! "Wernher von Braun" is now REPUBLISHED for the third time to celebrate a lot of video views for the first versions published to YouTube. Why? Well, to offer the song in (even) slightly better quality. Use HQ if possible and play back the video on a single YouTube page to get a bigger video window. The older versions will stay on the channel.
The song "Wernher von Braun", written well before 1964 -- and years before the landing on the Moon itself -- was recorded to Ampex video in Oslo, Norway, in 1967. The song was originally published on The Tom Lehrer Wisdom Channel in July of 2007 and was, in fact, the channel's first video. The original 4:3-version is still on YouTube, as is an experimental 16:9 converted version. But in reality you should use THIS version, which preserves the original 4:3 aspect ratio and is a great leap forward in terms of technical quality. Of course this version also includes Tom Lehrer's spoken intro.
To make this song even more spot on, Lehrer used eight bars from the well-known German national anthem "Das Lied der Deutschen" as a song intro :-)
Check out more about the German national anthem here:

Please sing along! If you can follow Tom through the last two lines in the last verse, you´ll get an A. This contestant almost made it to the final two lines and he deserves a splendid B. Good job!
This is what Tom calls "a list song." The original tune is from the "Major-General´s Song" in the comic opera "The Pirates of Penzance" (1879), with original words by W. S. Gilbert and music by Arthur Sullivan.

Claim: This video contains THE BEST performance of The Elements that you are likely to see. Info: After a Tom Lehrer 1967 performance from Norway has been available on YouTube since 2007, another Scandinavian performance is now posted (2012). This time it is from the YouTuber "DrRaptus" from Denmark. Tom Lehrer´s The Elements is a sort of comic "list song" that some comedians used to do. One of them was Danny Kaye.
Background: The melody to The Elements is I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major-General (The Major-Generals Song) from the opera buffa The Pirates of Penzance. It was composed by Sir Arthur Sullivan, and it was first premiered in New York on December 31st 1879. The original libretto for the opera was written by Sir William Schwenck Gilbert.

This film is also available elsewhere on YouTube, but here you get to watch it with the soundtrack restored. Please read this info taken from the Demented Database: "A film of "Pollution", featuring a cartoon of a bird playing a piano at a dump, combined with real scenes of industrial excess from across America, was made in 1966 & 1967 by Astrafilms for the U.S. Communicable Disease Center (not the Environmental Protection Agency as previously reported). The first cut in 1966 featured the live recording of "Pollution" from the LP, but this version of the film was not used. It was then redone in 1967, using more drastic scenes to really drive home the message. Tom and the producers agreed that it would be better to use a studio recording of the song without the audience, so he re-recorded it for the second version. It was then distributed by the National Medical Audio-Visual Center."

The song in this video was written by Lehrer as early as 1952 or 1953 (may be even earlier), years before an Austrian version appeared, for which Lehrer did not get any credit. The song Wernher von Braun, written well before 1964 and recorded to Ampex video in 1967, was originally published on The Tom Lehrer Wisdom Channel in July of 2007. The original 4:3-version is still on YouTube. This converted version is just an experiment, but if you watch this copy, you will get to hear Tom Lehrer's spoken intro.
Try to click under the video window for higher playback quality or add &fmt=18 to the url to manually alter the playback resolution. It will not change too much though, because of the test conversion to wide screen.
To make this song even more spot on, Lehrer used eight bars from the well-known German national anthem "Das Lied der Deutschen" as a song intro :-)

This video is actually TWO songs: "National Brotherhood Week" and "When You Are Old And Gray". They were republished to let people enjoy Lehrer's verbal wit. Watch them in higher quality! Make sure the video is displayed on it's own page. Click the link under the video window to check if you're playing it back in higher quality. The difference isn't that big, but it is worth a try if you have got enough bandwith.
Of course these two songs have already been individually published to YouTube.
Enjoy!

This song was published three times: A "Wikipedia"-version, THIS version (without Wiki quotes) AND a new 4:3 HQ-version in August of 2009. Select the one you prefer. "Who's Next" (here in the full second version with intro) is unfortunately still a hot topic today. Iran will maybe have the bomb ready before South Africa? This is the republished version of August 2008 without the Wikipedia quote and with Tom Lehrer's original spoken intro.

This song could be a (sad) Lehrer profecy :-) Lehrer himself celebrated his 80th birthday on April 9th 2008. It was only right and proper to release "We Will All Go Together When We Go" in March as a "happy birthday" to him.

Lehrer did have a healthy perspective on marriage and aging. And he is right, as always. Just listen to "When You Are Old And Gray". This is true Lehrer wisdom of life, and it is good fun too :-)
Now, is it true that some YouTube videos deteriorate over time? The last time this video was checked it had a stuttering playback. If this happens to you, add the code &fmt=18 to the page url or select the alternative version ("National Brotherhood Week" and "When You Are Old And Gray" double video).

The "The MLF Lullaby" was republished in 4:3 HQ in August 2009. This is the old version. The song is a comment on an American proposal to produce a fleet of submarines and warships, each manned by international NATO crews, and armed with multiple nuclear-armed Polaris ballistic missiles. The proposal was floated by the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations. You should search for MLF and read about that on Wikipedia.

Over the years a lot of people have been offended by this song, also on YouTube.
Now you can read Tom Lehrer's own introduction to the song, played by The Music Show in Australia when he was interviewed on the telephone a few years ago:
- - -
Another big news story of the year (1965) concerned the Ecumenical Council in Rome, known as Vatican II. Among the things they did, in an attempt to make the church more commercial, was to introduce the vernacular into portions of the mass to replace Latin, and to widen somewhat the range of music permissible in the liturgy. But I feel that if they really want to sell the product in this secular age, what they ought to do is to re-do some of the liturgical music in popular song forms. I have a modest example here. It's called The Vatican Rag...

"The Masochism Tango" was republished in a 4:3 HQ-version in August 2009. The song is a typical Tom Lehrer original comment and this song will live forever. It really is a timeless gem!
In 1998 Lehrer hosted a radio show on BBC Radio 2, stating that he was inspired to write "The Masochism Tango" after hearing Tony Martin singing a song called "Kiss of Fire". You can hear Lehrer talking about the song here:

The song "Pollution" was republished in 4:3 HQ in August 2009. This is the old version, still here. Again, Lehrer was ahead of his time. Pollution was not a hot topic in the sixties. But if Lehrer thought the world was polluted many years ago, I really wonder what he thinks today.

Sometimes when this video is played back the technical audio/video quality is even worse than the average YouTube crap. It wasn't like that when published in 2007. Has it become worse? I don't know. Please try to add &fmt=6 to the page address and reload the page. You might get a better playback. This video will be republished later.

Cassius Clay and Mrs. Wallace are mentioned in this song, but were not mentioned in the original recording. The two people mentioned in the original recording were:
Lena Horne, born 1917, was a mulatto lounge singer, active in the 1960's, who became the first black American movie star when she signed a contract with MGM in 1942. Sheriff Jim Clark of Selma, Alabama, was responsible for several violent arrests of Civil Rights protestors, over the wishes of Selma mayor Joseph Smitherman, who wanted to bring industry to the town, and didn't want the negative publicity that violence would bring.
