Stronghold: Definitive Edition - Game Overview & Demo Release!
updated
Relive history with a remastered and completely reimagined album from the legendary Stronghold 'castle sim' series. This extended soundtrack features original music courtesy of Stronghold series composer Robert L. Euvino. This pristinely recorded volume of East Asian influenced work contains many full length, never-before heard instrumental pieces not included as part of the game’s initial launch.
More than twice the length of the original soundtrack, Stronghold: Warlords - OST Extended contains two unique iterations. An unembellished version with the music only in its purest form, and a second rendering, referred to as the Tao version, which completely re-contextualizes the material through additional sound design and voice over of select readings from the Tao Te Ching.
A treat for those with an interest in Eastern philosophies as well as for anyone who appreciates meditative soundscapes. For both versions, high quality uncompressed 24bit FLAC files as well as smaller, lightweight MP3s are provided to allow listeners to perfectly tailor their own playlists.

Exploring the rich history of East Asia over the past four years, alongside our community, has been an exciting journey for the Stronghold team. So to celebrate both TactiCon and the release of our final update we have discounted Stronghold: Warlords and other titles in the Stronghold series, with 75% off Warlords and its many medieval torture devices (While stocks last).
In even more exciting news, it gives us great pleasure to provide a short production update on our next Stronghold game, currently in development using Unreal Engine 5.
ICYMI: Yes. You heard that right! With development on Stronghold: Warlords now complete, we are retiring our older game engine and making the shift to Unreal Engine 5. This leap forward in graphical fidelity, with extensive technical support and a wealth of industry-leading features, will allow us to take beloved core elements of the Stronghold games and elevate them to new heights!

Stronghold 2 introduced a greater level of graphical fidelity to the Stronghold series, but also a larger focus on cinematics and story driven gameplay. The game itself and its 'Path of War' campaign was a much greater ask than the first Stronghold, with player choice and a greater persistence between missions. The scope and ambition here was fresh for the franchise and something that still inspires us today. So join us as we revisit beloved characters and the many other fine details that make up the DNA of the original 'castle sim'.

This new video on the Firefly Studios YouTube channel comes with a series of bombshell announcements including a new office, new engine, new acquisition and Nick’s newest (and most desperate) attempt to get his hands on some hardware upgrades.
After two decades of game development and production from our offices in Clapham Junction, Firefly Studios has finally moved and found a brand new home. While we – along with a lot of the industry – still operate on a partly remote basis, having a new office to spend time with the team has been a great way to kick off this new chapter of the Firefly story.
Speaking of new chapters, following several years and multiple releases of games as well as DLC, Firefly Studios is retiring the Vision Engine in favour of using Epic Games’ latest iteration of the Unreal Engine – UE5. The leap forward in graphical fidelity, the extensive technical support and wealth of industry-leading features will allow us to take core beloved elements of our games and elevate the entire package to new heights. Nevertheless, it will still take some time to fully unlock and engage the potential of this still fresh engine and create the games we all want to experience.
Accompanying this technical shake-up is an organisational one; Firefly Studios has been acquired by Devolver Digital. A world-renowned game publisher and friend of Firefly, Devolver acquired the studio in 2021 and has been supporting us in our activities and goals (as well as vice versa). With their background in championing indie games and our shared history, Devolver was a natural partner for our studio and is just another indication that Firefly’s achievements going forward will be bigger and better than ever.
With magnificent things on the horizon, fans of the Stronghold series will have plenty to look forward to. As always, stay tuned for more information about the Stronghold series and Firefly Studios.
The future of Firefly is bright.

Lend me your ears, fair Governors, as we proudly announce that Romans: Age of Caesar is out now for free on Steam!
In our previous video, we touched upon what has made Rome itself such a compelling setting for entertainment across the centuries, well beyond its final collapse. To discuss exactly what makes this new historical MMORTS special, we have none other than Mr Firefly himself, Simon Bradbury, the veteran designer and coder for the Stronghold and Caesar series.
As with every legendary endeavour, assembling your ancient city piece by piece from its early foundations into a flourishing beacon of civilization will be a challenge that demands great endurance. From its architectural layout, religious backbone and strategic defences, to its economic establishments, cultural centres and legal substructure, it takes serious effort to build Rome, and that’s why you’ll be doing it alongside 15 other Governors, sharing responsibilities and resources to advance your city and expand your influence.
This dedicated cooperative dimension extends to the wider region, with multiple other cities, each led by their own ruling Governors, to work with or against for your own gain. This can take the form of negotiating trading routes, exchange supplies, developing new manufacturing goods, combating barbarian hordes, extending the frontiers and more. Together, with cities upon cities connected by mutual benefit, you will all form the Roman Empire; a commonwealth of a size and scope the world has never before witnessed.
Finally, within this social network of factions vying for supremacy, there is the Roman Senate: a political endgame that will decimate all but the most shrewd of power brokers. The task will be daunting, the road will be long, but the rewards are more than plentiful for those deemed worthy of them; to be crowned as Caesar himself and have your name echoed throughout the ages.
Nevertheless, talking (or writing) can only do so much; see the breadth and depth of Romans: Age of Caesar for yourself on Steam or at PlayRomans.com
As always, stay tuned for more information about the future of Romans, the Stronghold series and Firefly Studios.

As we approach the Steam launch of Romans: Age of Caesar on April 27th, we wanted to discuss Rome (or Roma as Aaron likes to say it) and its hold on our lives and imagination. Through its influence across law, architecture, trade, military tactics, art and craftsmanship, ancient Rome has its hold on developers worldwide.
Today we're incredibly excited to talk about why the Eternal City of Echoes and the empire that blossomed from its industrious seed came to be the setting for our latest and most ambitious online game, Romans: Age of Caesar. Gaming is unique in its capacity to allows players to actively engage with historical settings, making your experience far more personal as a result of being active participants, instead of just passive observers.
While every genre chooses different dimensions of Roman civilization to examine, we’re particularly interested in bringing to life architectural, economic and political planning needed to transform a city on the southern Italian peninsula into an continent-spanning empire that lasted for centuries through natural disasters, civil wars, barbarian invasions and power-hungry tyrants.
Likewise, the advances in technology have meant that in every aspect, from music and design to visual art and gameplay, the ways in which we can artistically recreate and represent Roman life has evolved over the years, with new avenues for technical experimentation while building upon the classic city-building heritage that Firefly Studios is known for.
We can’t wait for you to get your hands on Romans: Age of Caesar for free on Steam on April 27th!
Stay tuned for more upcoming information about Romans, the Stronghold series and the future of Firefly Studios.

It's a new year here at Firefly Studios and with it comes fresh releases, projects and updates! We're kicking off our post-Warlords content here on YouTube with some pretty big news and although we're light on details for now you can expect much, much more in the coming months (and years) as we dive into our exciting plans for the Stronghold series, Romans: Age of Caesar and more. What plans you ask? Well you'll just have to carve out seven and a half minutes to watch our 'Firefly in 2022' update in full, as we speak as candidly as we can about the future of the Stronghold series and Romans: Age of Caesar, which will be expanding it's empire onto Steam and mobile platforms this year.
With development now fully wrapped on Stronghold: Warlords and the Ultimate Edition releasing in just a few days on February 14th 2022, it's time for the Stronghold team to regroup and plan ahead. Feedback on Steam, Discord, YouTube, elsewhere on The Internet and of course from our massive Stronghold Player Survey - which thanks to you had thousands of detailed responses - has all ensured that the future of the series is a secure one. Your feedback and reviews have all suggest we're on the right track when it comes to our plans for Stronghold, which thanks to the success of Warlords has been secured here at Firefly.
So while in terms of releases 2022 will be dedicated to our MMOs, with Romans: Age of Caesar launching and continued support for our massive Kingdoms player base, we will of course be providing updates wherever possible regarding the future of Stronghold. The team here at Firefly is incredibly excited about where we can take Stronghold in terms of design and tech, so stay tuned this year for a few tasty teasers on that front as soon as we can confirm them.

Update: While our big v1.10 update and Warrior Queen Campaign DLC will launch as planned on January 25th, the release of Stronghold: Warlords' Ultimate Edition has now been delayed to February 14th. We apologise for this delay but hope you enjoy the free content and DLC campaign, both still releasing next week!
On Tuesday January 25th 2022 we'll be releasing our final set of Stronghold: Warlords content - A massive v1.10 update and the Fu Hao Campaign DLC, followed by a new bundle in the form of Warlords' Ultimate Edition!
Available next week v1.10 will be a free update for all owners of the game, while the Fu Hao Campaign DLC will be available to purchase alongside the upcoming Ultimate Edition, the best option for players who don't yet own Warlords and want all the DLC.
Fu Hao AI Opponent (v1.10)
High priestess and military general Fu Hao is our final addition to the roster of AI opponents available in Stronghold: Warlords. Mixing auxiliary class troops such as Archers and Axemen, with the heavier likes of Imperial Cavalry, Crossbowmen and Guardsmen, Fu Hao comes out swinging with a strong well-rounded army that is effective in both the early and late game.
For this legendary strategist a castle siege is about bringing siege engines with high power and rate of fire to the front line, protecting them for just long enough to punch a hole in your defences and pour her armies through before you know what happened! In order to siege Fu Hao you will need to get past eight medium towers filled with troops, along with powerful Ballistae and Mangonel platforms.
Trail of the Tyrant (v1.10)
Skirmish Trails have been a popular post-launch feature for Warlords, where many spend their time outside the main campaign and custom skirmish, so it simply wouldn’t be a final update without the addition of our longest skirmish trail yet! To that end we're adding an epic 20 mission odyssey across 12 maps, including all 8 AI lords and each of the 12 warlords available in our upcoming version 1.10.
The ‘Trail of the Tyrant’ is designed to employ every addition made to Stronghold: Warlords since launch, from new units and warlords to AI opponents and more. Some of the most beloved games in the Stronghold series are remembered for their epic-length mission trails and with the addition of Warlords’ ‘Tyrant Trail’ the game now features 45 skirmish trail missions in total.
New Map Pack & Warlord (v1.10)
It wouldn’t be a content update without an all-new map pack and v1.10 is no different, with three unique maps bringing the total number of skirmish battleground to a whopping 28. That's in addition to 4 Free Build and 500 community maps available via Steam Workshop.
First up there’s Muddy Route - A medium sized four player map in which players will find themselves stuck fast in the deep mudflats. With little space to build your economy but plenty of open ground for fighting, this map should provide players with a challenging, but rewarding route to multiplayer victory.
Next is Windy Plains - A five player, medium sized map ideal for allied lords to face off against a rival team. This tightly-fit battleground atop the magnificent steppe, will prove challenging skirmishes for some players more than others with starting positions and resource locations acting as a handicap of sorts.
Finally we have Island Tensions - This six player map accommodates five warlords and, as the name suggests, plenty of tense combat across its land.
Version 1.10 will also add a new free warlord in the form of the Lion Warlord, in addition to the release of two paid warlords (Eagle and Dog) made available as part of the Warrior Queen Campaign DLC.
A known rival to the Wolf Warlord, the Lion Warlord stands for justice above all else. Marching out to besiege his enemies with great power at his disposal, the Lion is relentless. True to his name, the Lion takes care of his pride with a perk that provides a damage boost to all infantry serving a warlord under the control of a player. As for his infantry and your choice of edicts, The Lion Warlord can provide swords, samurai and siege weapons.
The Warrior Queen Campaign (DLC)
Chronicling 15 years of ancient Chinese history, The Warrior Queen Campaign brings to life a legendary commander. From counter attacks against the invading Tu-Fang tribe, to the Qiang Fang presence in the north and more, this new campaign captures the full breadth of Fu Hao’s achievements on the battlefield. Expect six challenging missions including new gameplay twists, such as the addition of the powerful Eagle and Dog Warlords.

Today we continue our 'Devs React' series with a second reaction-filled episode! This time our veteran Lead Designer Simon Bradbury looks back, using gameplay from the final mission of Stronghold HD to reflect on his history in game dev and how gamers play our titles today. We then examine a few more strategy classics - modern or otherwise - comparing titles in the strategy scene from some of the biggest studios around.
So join us as we delve into the science fiction world of Blizzard's StarCraft 2, Relic's recent continuation of a fan favourite franchise in Age of Empires 4 and the bespoke gameplay experience of Total War Medieval. All of which have inspired both Firefly itself and the strategy scene as a whole, to evolve, grow and reach new players.

We have just released our new v1.9 update for Stronghold: Warlords, which includes the Minamoto no Yoritomo AI opponent, extra achievements, new maps and an increased total troop limit in offline skirmish mode of up to 1,000 units!
This free update has been released alongside the launch of our Rise of the Shogun Campaign DLC, which adds six missions and two warlords to the Stronghold: Warlords base game. Both the update and DLC are now available on Steam and GOG, with a 10% launch week discount for Rise of the Shogun.
Yoritomo AI & New Maps (Version 1.9)
Founder and first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, Yoritomo constructs his fortifications in the Japanese style, leading his forces with the bravado expected of feudal Japan’s centre of power. With a distinctive H-shaped castle, Yoritomo shores up his defences using a mix of tower types, as well as using plenty of Mangonel turrets, allowing him to strike first in a short-range siege.
Yoritomo uses his positive Fear Factor to boost an army favouring mounted Samurai Lancers, Auxiliary Cavalry, Archers and Sōhei Warrior Monks. These are dangerous units in his hands, but ones still vulnerable to a range of strategies and thus opening Yoritomo up to effectively-timed counterattacks. It’s also worth noting that Yoritomo stays away from trebuchets, meaning players can employ these as a defensive measure and strike first, when they find themselves besieged.
While Minamoto no Yoritomo is the headline feature here, three new maps also make their debut in version 1.9:
Open Borders - A large map capable of hosting 6 players, with just 2 warlords to fight over. Here each Lord will need to build their castle well, as the lack of hard borders will require fully fortified defences.
Forest Clearing - A medium sized 5 player map with almost as many warlords to conquer and command. In this map rival lords will peer through a thick forest surrounding them to see a deceptively clear battleground, only to discover the dangers they must prepare for.
Winding Path - With space for three players and warlords. Here three lords battle to hold strategic positions. The eventual victor will identify the correct tactical choices at the most opportune moments during a game, emerging victorious by taking the advantages on offer.
Rise of the Shogun Campaign (DLC)
Charting a course through history from the Battle of Uji in 1180 AD to the culmination of the Genpei War, Rise of the Shogun Campaign provides players with six new historical missions set across a decisive period of Japanese medieval history. With tales of warring clans, fragile alliances, betrayals and murdered royalty, Rise of the Shogun brings a bloody chapter of history to life while testing the skills of veteran Stronghold players.
Expanding the main single player campaign, this new campaign DLC depicts five pivotal years of political conflict across six new missions. Experience Yoritomo's life as an accomplished military leader as you cement the power of the samurai, found the Kamakura shogunate and begin the feudal age of Japan! As part of this campaign, The Rise of the Shogun DLC also introduces two new controllable AI warlords available in skirmish mode and online multiplayer.
As a master of deception, playing against a rival Snake Warlord means keeping careful watch over your stronghold. Ninjas striking from the shadows are one thing, but with a unique perk that boosts the attacking power of these stealthy units a Snake can be a powerful and underhanded foe. In the hands of a capable player however these covert attacks can be a vital tool, keeping your enemies on edge at all times.
While not quite as devious as the Snake, the Grasshopper Warlord can prove just as fast and effective for targeting rival player economies. With a perk that can boost Spirit and the ability to round out your peasants medieval diet with some much needed vegetables, the Grasshopper is definitely not one to underestimate in the economic war that underpins each conflict.

It's finally here! Our Autumn and Winter content roadmap for Stronghold: Warlords has been revealed and with it new AI lords, maps, fixes, optimisations, skirmish trail missions and warlords. As with our previous two content roadmaps, today's reveal shows the updates you can look forward to in the coming months and the general order in which you can expect them. That is of course with the news that we'll be turning our eye to the future of Stronghold, after our final Warlords update has been released.
During development and in the year post-release we've made a number of improvements and adjustments to Warlords, working with the community to launch and iterate on our latest castle sim. While we have many exciting ideas and ambitions for the future of the series (more on that as it happens), we still have plenty of dry gunpowder when it comes to new Warlords updates. So for our final roadmap we're doubling down on our most popular post-release content. This includes new AI opponents, further increasing our map count and more single player content in the form of our longest Skirmish Trail yet! There are a few other community-requested features on the horizon, however we'll keep those as a surprise...
We hope you've enjoyed our eight updates so far and look forward to our remaining plans for Warlords development in the Autumn and Winter period. There is an exciting future ahead for Stronghold and we can't wait to share our plans, for now however please enjoy these new updates!

Complete a new time-limited Halloween survival mission! Available until November 2nd 2021, players must defend their castle from increasingly difficult waves of mythical AI invasion. After this date the mission will disappear... However both the Jiangshi and Terracotta Warriors will remain available as selectable AI Invasions in Free Build mode, making them permanent additions to the base game.
Inspired by tales from the crypt, Chinese folklore and history, our new Halloween update is now live! Erect your defences and prepare for a supernatural slaughter, as you brave our terrifying new mission and fresh enemy units in the form of the Jiangshi and Terracotta Warrior. Customise your castle and ready your army for magic and malice unseen since the days of Stronghold Legends! Warlords now features a time limited challenge in the form of our new survival mission featuring new enemy units, with these horrors permanently added to the game's Free Build mode as spooky AI invasions.
The name of the game in our new mission is survival, as you're pitted against a relentless onslaught of castle invasions and new foes that are almost certainly not of this world. Use Peace Time wisely as you outfit your defences for the days to come... With the knowledge that each foe is an opposite side of the same supernatural coin. A weakness to one could be a strength to the other. So experiment with fire, fury, steel and diseased animal carcasses as you pinpoint their vulnerabilities to hold back the hordes of undead!
Whatever you do, never underestimate a single Jiangshi. For although they may be isolated from the pack, they are ever as deadly...
We hope you enjoy today's update and are as excited as we are about this otherworldly content addition! The team thoroughly enjoyed researching and designing these spooky spectres, bringing them to life in Stronghold: Warlords in our biggest Halloween update yet. Please enjoy and look forward to more Warlords updates in the Autumn and Winter months, with a full content roadmap reveal coming in November.
Happy Halloween and Happy Jiangshi Hunting!

We have just released Stronghold: Warlords version 1.7! Out now on Steam and GOG, our second Skirmish Trail Update introduces 15 additional Skirmish Trail missions, a new unit on the form of the fiery Thunderbomb Thrower, the powerful Wolf Warlord and three multiplayer map remakes inspired by your comments and the original Stronghold: Crusader.
Our second skirmish trail was designed with player feedback in mind. We have increased the challenge and total mission count, while still providing multiple difficulty settings and of course the legendary chicken, which combined should allow all players to see it through. These new Trail missions feature all added Stronghold: Warlords content to date, including 2 new AI opponents, new warlords, units and maps. We hope you enjoy the new trail and let us know what you think, either in the comments below or on Discord, to help inform the design of future skirmish content.
In addition to our titular trail content, version 1.7 also introduces a new unit and warlord in the form of the Thunderbomb Thrower and Wolf Warlord. The former is an explosive new addition to Warlords' roster of soldiers, allowing you to rain hellfire down on your opponent's armies and indeed economy. Our new warlord meanwhile can significantly boost your overall attacking power and siege capabilities, with various uses through his Edicts and Perk that make the Wolf a valued ally in the early, mid and late game.
Today's new map pack was very much player-led, with each of the three new maps being a remake of a Stronghold: Crusader multiplayer map, selected by you right here in the comments on YouTube. So shout out to Cheesecake Productions, Chimbambu and HommeDesBois! Thanks to your suggestions we were inspired to remake Tyre, The River and Border Patrol within Stronghold: Warlords. Enjoy!
As detailed in today's video, with the release of our second Skirmish Trail Update and version 1.7 we are nearing the end of our Summer/Autumn content roadmap, with just one more mystery update planned. But worry not! More updates are on the way and we'll be revealing this in due course right here on YouTube and on the official Stronghold Discord. So if you aren't subscribed be sure to do that right now with notifications turned on and you'll be the first to hear about our future Warlords plans.

We have just released our new v1.6 content update for Stronghold: Warlords, which includes a new AI opponent in Kublai Khan, three fresh maps to battle across, new Mongolian voice lines and achievements. This free update has been released alongside the launch of our Mongol Empire Campaign DLC, now available on Steam and GOG with a 10% launch week discount.
Kublai Khan AI & New Map Pack (Version 1.6)
Used to the finer things in life and thus sticking to expensive, powerful armies with which to wage his infamous skirmishes, Kublai Khan is always playing the long game. A heavy reliance on Imperial class units including Crossbowmen, Imperial Warriors, Cavalry, Generals, Fire Lancers and - of course - Horse Archers, means that Kublai Khan is dependent on an elaborate economy to support his war efforts.
Give him enough time to build up and Kublai Khan will hit your castle walls like a hammer, meaning a quick plan for your wartime economy and early attacks are almost certainly the way to go. Likewise his siege engines lean away from ladders and towers, toward the more destructive options in your Stronghold arsenal. Expect mortars, mantlets, rocket launchers, hwacha and trebuchets out in full force, with a clear intent to blow apart your castle walls - Instead of sneaking over ninjas or flooding them with foot soldiers.
While Kublai Khan is undoubtedly the headline feature of version 1.6, three new skirmish maps also make their debut:
Kings and Mountains - Balanced as a four way face off between players, this map allows each of these illustrious lords to rule safely from the comfort of their keep or go for broke!
Entrenched - Offers a head to head scenario in the form of an unbalanced map for two players. With three warlords, as well as plentiful resources and ample build space, this map provides what have proven to be popular map features.
Distributary - Another triple threat map for three players with four warlords available. To survive, each player will need to build, reinforce and defend large sections of castle walls, in order to defend their lands and hold off potential incursions from two separate fronts.
The Mongol Empire Campaign (DLC)
This new campaign DLC depicts over a decade of military conflict across six new missions. As Kublai Khan’s story progresses players can expect a unique set of maps with fresh tactical scenarios and objectives to overcome, truly earning the title of Khagan. As part of this new campaign, The Mongol Empire DLC also introduces two completely new controllable AI warlords, The Monkey and Peacock.
The Monkey Warlord is all about surprising his enemies with unpredictable tactics and sudden castle breaches. Able to mimic other warlord abilities upon capture, the simian strategist chooses his unique perk at random from other warlords on the map. This resets each time a Monkey is captured and is further randomised if only other Monkey Warlords are present. Recapture to reroll an ideal perk for the situation and your enemies will be gibbon no quarter!
The Peacock Warlord knows the importance of keeping up appearances, boosting your economy and popularity. He accomplishes this with a perk that not only increases popularity from clothing, but also gives your villagers some of the finest attire in the land.

Today we release our latest update for Stronghold: Warlords, alongside the reveal of our next content roadmap of updates covering the summer and autumn period! Now available on Steam and GOG, version 1.5 introduces a host of bug fixes and general improvements requested by players, while the reveal of our Summer/Autumn roadmap details our plans over the next few months.
Having now completed our Spring/Summer content roadmap, which added many requested features and improvements to the core Warlords experience, it's time to move onto our second phase of post-launch development. Our first content roadmap addressed feedback received at launch, which was tracked and discussed internally before its reveal. This included frequent requests for new AI opponents, but also changes to AI behaviour and other fixes and improvements that were obvious low hanging fruit in the early days post launch. We built on this soon after with features planned long before launch that we knew would be popular, such as the addition of Free Build AI Invasions, our first Skirmish Trail, new warlords, the Samurai Lancer unit and more.
As we moved into our second planned phase of content we decided to kick this off with a general fixes and improvements update, sticking largely to bug fixes while also looking at other tweaks that could be made in the time available to us after v1.4. Now that this update is out in the wild, we can turn our focus back to new content, one of the most common requests from players post launch, along with continuing background work on optimisations. When it comes to content we'll continue to grow the AI roster with the addition of Kublai Khan, while also adding new maps, a second skirmish trail, new Wolf warlord, Thunderbomb Thrower unit, a classic Stronghold map pack and other unannounced additions.
We hope this next stage of content for Stronghold: Warlords sounds exciting and brings Warlords more in line with your hopes for the game post-release. As a studio we are committed to building out the game adding extra features, tweaks and polish expected of such a long running and beloved series. Everyone at the studio would like to thank you for your continued interest in and passion for the series which will continue to improve on, building on your feedback in both Warlords and future Stronghold titles.
Thanks for playing!

We have just released version 1.4 of Stronghold: Warlords, available now on Steam and GOG! The Skirmish Trail Update introduces the game’s first ‘skirmish trail’, a series of challenging missions with unique conditions to overcome and achieve victory. Other features added in the update include a new mounted soldier, two additional AI warlords, the return of a popular building for healing units and two extra multiplayer maps.
A classic mode introduced in the original Stronghold: Crusader, skirmish trails invite experienced players to display their mastery over Stronghold’s economic gameplay and RTS combat. Each trail mission pits player lords against a unique combination of AI opponents, recruitable warlords, resources, starting goods and teammates across a combination of new and existing maps. Choosing between ‘Standard’ and ‘Challenging’ difficulties, the classic ‘Chicken’ feature can also be used to skip missions players find too difficult.
The mounted Samurai Lancer marks Warlords’ first post-release unit, boosting the game’s launch roster of 16 soldiers and 10 siege weapons. With the ability to buff attack damage for all nearby mounted allies, the Samurai Lancer is a powerful new Japanese unit type. Armed with a piercing lance and clad in samurai armour, the Lancers are based on the Onna-musha female warriors of pre-modern Japan. Highly-skilled horsewomen as fast as Auxiliary Cavalry, but with an attacking strength comparable to their Imperial brethren, the Samurai Lancer provides support for other mounted units while also packing a punch of their own.
A common request pre-release and one built into Warlords’ content roadmap from an early stage, the ability to heal units is now available in the new Field Hospital structure. A unique building that can be placed by any Beetle Warlord under your control, the Field Hospital heals all allied troops standing within its area of effect. Upgrading the Beetle Warlord will also increase the amount of healing given to troops over time, making this Edict even more effective at protecting defensive troops or those stationed in preparation for a siege.
The Beetle and Bear Warlords are the first of several new warlords being added to the game in 2021. In addition to the aforementioned Field Hospital, the Beetle Warlord is a master of defence, giving players access to cheaper castle traps and shipments of armour. The Bear Warlord meanwhile is all about strength in numbers, improving the buff radius of Imperial Bannermen and making Imperial troops more affordable. The Bear is also effective for feeding your population and can even launch siege attacks of his own!
Finally both the Ascendance and Guarded Crossings maps are now available for use in skirmish mode and online multiplayer. Ascendance is a large four player map that proves some lords are more equal than others, giving each a chance to secure the high ground and claim victory. Meanwhile Guarded Crossings sees the northern player benefit from a large build area, but without access to the valuable warlords their rivals will be hotly contesting.
While the release of the Skirmish Trail Update and version 1.4 brings us to the end of our initial spring/summer content roadmap, rest assured more updates are on the way! This will begin with the reveal of our summer/autumn roadmap, with full details on that arriving next month. So if you're hungry for more Stronghold: Warlords content be sure to keep an eye on our official Discord server and YouTube channel for the latest updates.

The Rat and Panda Warlords introduce new tactical spice to Stronghold: Warlords' core gameplay. Subdue your enemy without lifting a finger using their new perks, edicts and upgrades or indeed team up to combine your military prowess and conquer rival lords using a joint attack force. Cause mischief with the Rat Warlord with effective early game skirmishes or bide your time with the Panda, who combines unique anti-archer protection with industry-boosting edicts.
Releasing today alongside our first Warlords DLC is of course version 1.3 of the base game, which adds another round of optimisations, fixes, AI improvements and our first official map pack! Battle the elements among thick jungle hills on Thunder Strikes, construct castles to your heart's content on Lost Kingdoms' larger build areas and skirmish across river crossings in Flows Like Time. This is the first of several map packs coming to Stronghold: Warlords, so let us know what you think of them in the comments below as we continue to iterate on player feedback with each update.

Once again it's community Q&A time! Today Nick runs a gauntlet of the most common post-release questions and - more importantly - a series of dastardly challenges posed by Firefly Videographer Aaron Hayden. So if you've ever wanted to see Nick inhale a bowl of spicy noodles, draw fellow Firefly staff and impersonate classic Stronghold characters then boy we do have the video for you.
Got a question not featured in today's post-release Q&A? Worry not! We've taken the liberty of including all other Stronghold community questions (at least - those we currently have answers to) below to cover all bases. As always if you have further questions having watched today's video please head over to the official Stronghold Discord, where developers and fellow players will be happy to discuss the series.
Q: Will the net code for multiplayer include a multiplayer server at some point? (King Power)
A: Warlords was always designed with peer to peer multiplayer and this will remain the case, although we will continue to optimise the game improving both offline skirmish mode and online multiplayer.
Q: Would you guys ever consider multiplayer custom games (war/peace scenarios) for Warlords or future Stronghold titles? (Loaf Cat)
A: We're big fans of multiplayer game modes! Economic War was a huge favourite in Legends and going forward we'll definitely be looking at multiplayer in the series as a whole, starting with new AIs and map packs for Warlords.
Q: Will we be able to zoom more in game in future? (MatejH7)
A: This is something that's unlikely to change in Warlords for a variety of reasons, but we are definitely looking at this going forward with Stronghold.
Q: In the map editor will there ever be a "No enemy or invasion left" trigger? (Zaidah)
A: This can be achieved by setting up a "Invasion has no troops" trigger, left after the final invasion.
Q: In the map editor can we manually activate/deactivate AI lords building by themselves? (Zaidah)
A: If you're asking for the ability to stop an AI from building up a castle and economy, this can be done in 'Mission' type maps.
Q: Will you release a 2nd part of your Map Making Guide explaining invasions scripting? (Nigel)
A: While we're unlikely to update our guide with explanations for every single action and condition, we will look into providing some example explanations. These should be enough to get you going!
Q: Hey I was wondering if you would consider more adjustable video settings? (Acid Person)
A: Yes we will be reviewing these in a future update.
Q: Please give more help/Infos for the Editor. Maybe we can edit firefly Maps? (Manhood LIVE)
A: We actually posted a map editor guide at launch, along with several 'template' maps based on our own creations to our Steam Workshop page. In the future we will also try to update the guide and add new Firefly maps to Workshop:
steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2419503398
Q: Does Warlords still have Free Build mode? (John Eric Mendoza)
A: Yep! We also recently added AI invasions, allowing you to test your castle with different attacking armies, medieval events and more.
Q: I love you firefly! Where can I get that shirt? (TarkinG)
A: We love you too! As for our shirts we occasionally run competitions on Discord for this kind of thing, so keep an eye out there.
Q: Will it be a possibility to add new resources and production chains? Maybe alcohol? (Zebastian)
A: We're not planning any new production chains or resources for Warlords, largely because the game was balanced with the current system in mind. That said we hear you! It's a suggestion at the forefront of our minds going forward with the series.
Q: More Warlords? Hell yeah! (Cadett Klinge)
A: Hell yeah indeed. Plenty more on the way!
Q: If you like a community map a lot would you put it in the official game? (Finn Siemetzki)
A: If we had time to test them all!
Q: Will you ever bring Stronghold 2 and Legends Steam Editions to GOG? (Arminius)
A: That's not currently part of our plans, however we're always looking at updates and improvements for the older titles (when we get the time to do so).
Q: Could you please add Majapahit campaign? (M . Tarumingkeng)
A: We're unlikely to add brand new 'nations' to Warlords, however if there's ever a sequel we have plenty of ideas! Thanks for bringing this one to our attention, as we'd genuinely love to explore other parts of the world and had a great time researching Warlords.
Q: Firefly could you please do a video interview with Robert Euvino? (der fer)
A: As soon as international travel is safe!
Q: Hello how is your day? (BlackSasinnik)
A: Good! We enjoyed these challenges and generally it feels good to be able to talk about our plans for Warlords and the series as a whole.

Whilst we finalize our brand new DLC 'The Art of War', coming to Stronghold: Warlords on the 18th May. Firefly developer Aaron had some time to dive into the complex history of skirmishes and battles surrounding its protagonist: Sun Tzu. So to make sure you're the most studied strategy player you can be before you load up the epic 6 mission historical campaign, enjoy this crash course of Ancient Chinese history!
From the inception of Wu during the Spring & Autumn period to the Battle of Boju. Sun Tzu was not only one of the most fascinating (and controversial!) figures of Chinese warfare, but also the supposed author of a military strategy guide which has survived until today (Aaron purchased a copy in preparation for this video). This new DLC is based on his operations within the war of states: Wu & Chu. Who says you can't learn some exciting world history along with optimizations, new maps and quality of life updates for your games?

While our developers work on the upcoming version 1.3 content update for Stronghold: Warlords, the marketing team had a little time to grant an oft-requested video... In the form of today's skirmish survival! Pitting Firefly QA against Nick and Aaron, today's video is the start of more creative content appearing here on YouTube. Going forward our goal will be to highlight community content and respond to video requests from players, alongside frequent roadmap updates like the recent Sun Tzu and AI invasions patch.
Watch as two of Firefly's marketers go up against the formidable opposition of Firefly QA! With 30 minutes to prepare for attack, Nick and Aaron must survive against an onslaught of samurai, trebuchets and mortars. Using every trick up their sleeve - from camouflaged Lords to thick walls and hidden traps - our resident hype men must survive a single, colossal attack from our multiplayer pros.

Today Stronghold: Warlords gets its first major content release with the Sun Tzu v1.2 Update! Adding requested features such as a new AI opponent, AI invasions in Free Build mode, a new Free Build map, general fixes and AI improvements, this update is now available to all players on Steam and GOG.
The introduction of new AI is something we're excited about and we're kicking things off with none other than Sun Tzu. The master tactician was an easy choice for us post-launch and, coupled with recent improvements to the AI, one we're excited to put in the hands of players. Initial testing puts Sun Tzu at the higher end of the difficulty scale, particularly when combined with the newer Extreme difficulty option and other tweaks possible in skirmish mode. So when going up against this fiendish AI remember to move fast and seize control of the battlefield!
The AI focus continues this week with the much anticipated post-release addition of AI invasions in Free Build mode. Allowing players to launch enemy invasions of different shapes and sizes, as well as the difficulty of these attacks and other parameters, invasions open up Free Build mode to the more combat minded players out there. Now not only can you build to your heart's content in Free Build mode, but also use this time to prepare for war! Balance castle cosmetics with real world tactical considerations and crown yourself as the ultimate castle designer.
Today's new content update also brings the total number of maps in Warlords to 15 across Skirmish, Multiplayer and Free Build, with a further 300 user-created maps also available via Steam Workshop. In the past few weeks Warlords has gained a brand new map, a rework of an existing large map with increased build space and now a new Free Build map, the first of its type to feature warlords. This increase will continue into the upcoming version 1.3 and beyond, with v1.3 specifically set to include three new maps for use in skirmish mode and multiplayer.
